I don't really know how easy it is to buy drugs on the street there. My brother who lives there, and his wife and community, are very down on drugs, and don't give the impression that they are readily available. Poorer local people try to sell fake drugs to the tourists, apparently.

This tourist blog says the guy could not find a joint the whole time he was in Bali.
http://www.singledudetravel.com/2013/09/the-single-dudes-guide-to-bali-indonesia-2/

But this FB site about the book Hotel Kerobokan (and other articles) say that drugs are rife in Kerobokan prison .. so where do those drugs come from?
https://www.facebook.com/kathrynbonellabooks

Just want to add, Schapelle Corby was jailed in Bali for trying to bring 4kg of pot into Bali. Makes me wonder about the availability there.

I spent quite a bit of time in Bali in my late teens and early twenties as I lived in Western Australia then and it is a three hour flight.

And back then there was no shortage of dope anywhere (not that I smoked any - I'm no fan of it myself, it just makes me tired and antisocial). I have Balinese friends, so they had it, but I also know that tourists got offered drugs all the time on the streets and beaches.

But - times may well have changed !! I'm forty one now....so that was twenty years ago (yikes!!! that's a scary sentence!! :floorlaugh:)

Even then though, tourists were crazy to buy it as a lot of the sellers were undercover cops :scared:

Did Sheila really die within the same night TS arrived? Within 7-8 hrs. of his being in Bali?

Wow, if that is true, it makes my head spin. He didn't even get a chance to enjoy anything before he was lugging that suitcase. He and Heather scramble to get to another hotel and they have sex. Then, he's arrested. It's too bizarre, stupid, pointless, and it's hard to believe there was a premeditated plan for that timing anyways.

The finger pointing will have to begin at some point. TS still has the full weight of that suitcase on his shoulders, and it's not fair or right. TS has to point to Heather and say it was all her fault or idea because ultimately it was. I'm not saying he is innocent, as he was in on the after and he did not have to go along with anything proposed to him for some money or whatever the reason he cooperated. All I'm really saying is Heather is the main controller and manipulator for not valuing her mother's life at all.

I think they tried to get their passports and flee the country. That shows plan. Pre/post murder, I'm not sure. Some people say duct tape was used but I can't find that reference. They also tried to get new passports at the airport.. Then went to a budget hotel.

US murder suspects remain
tight-lipped

The police’s appointed lawyer, Haposan Sihombing, said he had failed to get any information from either suspect, but added that Mack posed a rhetorical question to him on Thursday. “‘Are you sure that I am the perpetrator?’” Haposan quoted Mack as saying.

The lawyer said he was astonished to hear the question.

During the visit, Haposan said the suspect, who is pregnant, also questioned the police’s decision to separate her from her boyfriend.

The National Police say it is possible that the two suspects will be handed over to the FBI for further investigation into the homicide.

Maybe there was a plan to tell Shelia that HM was pregnant & go from there. Shelia might not have been too enthusiastic - maybe she insulted TS & HM. And HM, who couldn't bear to be thwarted, reacted by hitting Shelia with the 1st available object - the ashtray.

Can you just imagine Shelia welcoming her daughter's child - I can't. HM would've saddled Shelia with it, while she went about her life.

So why else would HM invite Tommy? She knew before she left Chicago that she was pregnant.

When they got to the airport without their passports, were they going back to Chicago & raid Shelia's bank acct. or fly off into the sunset? With criminals like these two, LE has an easy job.

  • #707
Has it been discussed why she was also naked? Or at least how she became naked before being stuffed in the suitcase?

I thought maybe they took some of her clothes off in a desperate bid to be able to stuff her into the suitcase. Even articles have reported it must have been really hard to get her in and her legs were bent up over her head in a way that wouldn't be possible in life.

On one of the reports an ' unnamed relative ' says something like: she could sense heather was going to be a special girl....I wonder if it could have been the mother of James L Mack's son - who Sheila went to lengths in order not to let into the house by switching lights off & pretending she wasn't home....according to the very first police report on that Scribd......
The mother could have been curious as to why James L mack wasn't allowed to see his son but his daughter with Sheila was given extra priority & probably extra spoiled.
I also thought it weird when I read those reports because I assumed James l Mack's son was his oldest child, and therefore an adult at the time....but it says it was his child at the time of the police reports

I bet Sheila wanted the best for her daughter - hence never letting her go to prison all those times - so would've been extra disappointed she'd irresponsibly got pregnant. I think eventually Sheila would've liked a grandchild because it would be like a second chance with a child, as Heather probably wouldn't bother to be there bringing it up often.
It says in reports that Tommy's fingerprints are all over the two murder weapons. I can completely imagine sheila to be angry that her beloved daughter had ended up knocked up with someone who to her seemed like a deadbeat 🤬🤬🤬🤬. & could've said something insulting.

Perhaps Tommy thought he was on an escort job. At $50 an hour he'd be raking it in. I'd like to see a claim on the estate for that one.

James Mack had two previous marriages that ended in divorce. Apart from his widow Sheila von Wiese Mack and their daughter Heather, Mr. Mack is also survived by a son, James Jr. from his second marriage and four more daughters, Deborah, Donna, Kathy and Elaine; and two grandchildren from his first marriage.

That's from the obit - sorry link is now lost.

Since I never smoked pot in my life, and never wanted to try to; I don't know much about it. But I do know that now in Washington State and Oregon, which are both near the water (Pacific Ocean) and gets tons of rain each year off and on, its both legalized now and very popular stuff, especially in Oregon, which is rife with ex hippies from the 1960s who went back to live and retire there or never left there.

So perhaps, it doesn't really have much to do with watering or humidity after all??

It does apparently, I think that if it were legal, the hydroponic setup would aim for maximum THC

  • #712
Why did TS carry the suitcase containing Sheila’s body up to his room on the 6th floor? I don’t understand why he did that. Why not just leave it in the room on the 3rd floor until they were ready to try to check out of the hotel?

I sometimes wonder if HM did the murder .. and TS did the clean up .. getting his fingerprints on the broken glass and CCTV of him carrying the suitcase pointlessly to the 6th floor. I wonder whose idea that was?

.

Has it been determined that she died in her room?

Is she going to claim her mother was the one that attacked her? Or is she going to try to stick with the gang of six guys? Or throw TS under the bus. I think she wants to get more information out of them about what evidence they really have on her. Plenty they've said. (remember how Jodi Arias wanted to see evidence pictures while all the while denying?)

Some of my own thoughts trying to deal with this case as it is still upsetting me. Considering if this wasn't suppose to happen and was the result of some flukey rage, then their actions after are too chilling to believe that.

Forgive me for getting graphic as I go over speculations of the actual murder scene.
Heather's been known, according to the police reports, to throw picture frames, so I won't put it past her to pick up heavy objects to use for bashing. Neither of them seemed to have any bruises or marks showing their victim fought back because heavy objects were used to hit Sheila, and probably not fists. Sheila was probably standing they reported. Height of the person striking the blows may figure in. I noted that Heather's fingernails didn't look like she had been in a struggle, but I would imagine trying to get the body into the suitcase would ruin her manicure, so TS was needed. Yes, Heather, you are one of the perpetrators! The premeditation part concerns me because I ask if Sheila was hanging on to life when she was put in that suitcase.

I enjoy hearing what everyone here has to say. BBM

Wow. I did not put this together before.
The same night boyfriend arrives, they murder Sheila???!!!
Whoa.
Their texts and phone calls, SHOULD be beyond interesting.

There's no way that either of them will get to go back to the US.
Nor, SHOULD they, imo.
Rest in peace Sheila... you're home now, amongst loved ones.

Bali Suitcase Murder Timeline:

CHICAGO

Mon, 7/21/14 “Leaving Aug 4th for Indonesia might not come backkkk” TS wrote on his FB page according to DailyMail.co.uk

Wed, 7/23/14 SWM reported to police that her credit card was being used ... without her permission at the Conrad Hotel in Chicago. When police arrived at the tony downtown hotel, they discovered HM and her boyfriend, TS, had used the card to book a room and ring up nearly $1,000 in charges. TS, 21 yo and 6' 3", was arrested for misdemeanor disorderly conduct after acting unruly during the police response. The Oak Park native was scheduled to appear in court [sometime in the later half of Aug]. [?No other charges filed by SWM/hotel/LE?]

BALI

Mon, 8/4/14 SWM & HM arrived on Bali; first staying at a Simanyak hotel

Thur, 8/7/14 HM posted on Instagram a photo she presumably took from the window of their hotel ... accompanied by the caption: "i refuse to let someone say what i can do, gettin (sic) money my attitude you know what it do #bali," the MailOnline reports."

Sat, 8/9/14 SWM & HM moved to the St. Regis [? $545/night ?] in Nusa Dua; A St. Regis staff member told the Mail that HM and her mother were publicly fighting throughout the trip: "The mother had all the appearances of one of our upmarket guests. But the behavior she and her daughter showed did not belong in our hotel. Even so, it's such a tragic end for that poor woman."

Tues, 8/12/14; 12a+ Boyfriend TS arrived on Bali; St. Regis security camera showed HM, SWM & TS had public argument in lobby about who would pay bill upon departure; SWM said something like: I paid for his flight, you two can pay for his hotel. HM is believed to have shared occupancy of TS' room.

Tues, 8/12/14; 3:45a SWM was last spotted on CCTV walking around the hotel lobby

Tues, 8/12/14; ~6:45a SWM called receptionists asking to wake her up at 10am

Tues, 8/12/14 Police sources revealed the murder had occurred in room 317 - not 616 - which was being shared by SWM and her daughter ... in the early hours and from room 616, TS dressed in dark clothing was seen on the hotel’s security cameras stepping out into the corridor and taking the lift down to the third floor. ... TS entered room 317 - it is not known if he knocked or whether he had access to the keycard ... SWM
was bludgeoned to death ... with an object described as looking like an ashtray but which was more 'ornamental' ... with such violence that the objects shattered. “We found pieces of glass around [the] room ...” ... the 5' 5" victim was folded into the 3ft-long silver-coloured case ... but the lid would not close completely ... her alleged killers wrapped the suitcase in a sheet and pulled the cloth tight around ... ?duct tape? ... Bali police: "TS' fingerprints on murder weapon and suitcase"

Tues, 8/12/14 Some time later TS is seen allegedly lugging the suitcase on his shoulder as he steps out of the room [317]. ... surveillance footage revealed that the couple removed the suitcase from the room SWM was sharing with her daughter, cops said. ... and makes his way up the stairs to his own room. ... he made an error and found himself on the seventh floor and had to make his way back down one floor, police claim. ... TS was totally alone in the stairway

Tues, 8/12/14 He is then believed to have packed his own belongings and changed his clothes, including putting on a red and yellow jacket

Tues, 8/12/14; 10a No one answered the SWM requested 10am wake-up call to room 317

Tues, 8/12/14; ~11a TS asked a bell boy to come up and collect the luggage on a trolley. Security footage shows the bell boy walking a luggage trolly through the plush lobby, the sheet-covered suitcase lying under other bags. TS walks beside the trolley and it is he who lifts the sheet wrapped case, containing a folded SWM, into the boot of a waiting taxi before returning to the hotel with his girlfriend. ... told driver they were going to check out of the hotel and would return ... in lobby asked for contents of safe deposit box (SWM's jewelry, passports) and said SWM would pay for rooms when she checked out on Thurs ... staff refused on both accounts ... HM & TS said they had to return to their room but fled the hotel via a back exit ... CCTV footage showed that the couple escaped via the beach ... Commander DH, said the evidence of murder against HM and TS was 'overwhelming' - and he cited one good reason for it. ... - a sophisticated security system

Tues, 8/12/14 HM & TS went to the airport; inquired about replacement passports

Tues, 8/12/14; pm The couple reportedly checked in at the Risata Bali Resort and Spa [? $91/night ?] in the Kuta area, close to the international airport on Tuesday afternoon and paid with SWM's credit card; requested internet access

Wed, 8/13/14; ~8a LE found HM & TS asleep at the Risata Bali Resort. “The hotel security reported it to us as they realized the names of their guests were identical to the murder suspects announced by the police,” Djoko said.

Thur, 8/14/14 Scheduled check-out day from the St. Regis and probable return date of flight to USA.

So it’ll be at the least a charge of Article 338 (not premeditated murder) for our pair. I accidentally brought up a different case that is currently before the Indonesian courts (a teenage couple whom are currently on an Article 338 charge).

So it looks like our pair of Heather and Tommy are likely looking at upwards of 15 years.

This is from the other case (as per link):
The prosecutors said the suspects might also be charged under articles 338 and 353 on murder and assault. These articles stipulate maximum prison terms of 15 and 10 years, respectively.

It appears to me, that Sheila went through terrible times.
Very hard times.
Yet, through everything, she tried to protect her daughter, Heather.

Knowing what Sheila suffered and endured through these last 15 years, makes me even more furious at her selfish, spoiled daughter.

In America, Heather would probably get off, for the bludgeoning of her Mother, and the subsequent, disrespectful, horrible way, she shoved her Mom's dead, naked body into a small suitcase.

Can you even imagine the shock of the people who opened this suitcase to find a naked , bloodied woman, with her body so contoured that her legs were wrapped around her head?
Then to realize that her own daughter did this?

I swear. I hope Heather has to eat rice, 3 times a day, for the rest of her sorry life.

Apparently James become partially paralysed .. and that confined him to the wheelchair. It states this in the lawsuit .. which is at this link.

http://caselaw.findlaw.com/il-court-of-appeals/1016047.html

However .. he had to admit that he had been on trips since he was injured.

I guess we'll see if he's the father and/or just a hired killer, eh? He'll have to forfeit his wages on this escort job. lol

Did Sheila really die within the same night TS arrived? Within 7-8 hrs. of his being in Bali?

Has it been determined that she died in her room?

The below timeline of events, from oakpark.com, says 'yes' to both of these ^^^ questions.
I was reading about asphyxiation from blood the other night, it would not have taken very long for Sheila to pass on, once her nose and upper jaws were crushed. :(

Murder in Bali: A timeline
Monday, Aug. 4

Widow Sheila von Wiese Mack, 62, and daughter Heather Mack, 18, arrive in Bali from Chicago and check into the St. Regis Hotel.
Monday, Aug. 11
Tommy Schaefer, 21, arrives in Bali.
Hotel surveillance footage shows argument between von Wiese Mack and Schaefer over who should pay for Schaefer's $650/night hotel room.
Police say Sheila von Wiese Mack was bludgeoned in the face and killed in room 317 with a glass ash tray or vase.
Tuesday, Aug. 12
Heather Mack and Schaefer decline help from hotel staff as they load a large suitcase wrapped in a bed sheet into the back of a taxi in front of the St. Regis.
Schaefer and Mack attempt to check out of the hotel but cannot retrieve their passports, which are locked in a hotel safe, with instructions that only Sheila Mack can have access.
Schaefer and Heather Mack flee out the back door of the hotel. They go to Ngurah Rai Airport immigration counter saying they had lost their passports and needed new ones. The couple makes their way to another hotel near the airport, checking in with Sheila's credit card.
Police recover the suitcase and alert area hotels.
Wednesday Aug. 13
Heather Mack and Tommy Schaefer are found asleep in bed and arrested.
Initially they claim an armed gang attacked and robbed them. Mack and Schaefer refuse to speak to the police without lawyers present.
Thursday, Aug. 14
Police transfer Mack and Schaefer from the South Kuta police station to Denpasar police lockup.
Heather Mack and Schaefer are charged with the murder of Sheila von Wiese Mack.
Chicago attorney Michael Elkin says he is representing Heather Mack. He asserts she is innocent of her mother's death. Schaefer is reportedly represented by an Indonesian court-appointed lawyer.
Monday Aug. 18
Heather Mack is confirmed by police to be two months pregnant. Bali police say she will be checked regularly by the local doctor while in custody.
FBI representatives fly to Bali to arrange for the return to the U.S. of Sheila von Wiese Mack's remains.
