The rules appear pretty strict about living in Indonesia and I'm pretty sure all foreign people who are released from prison are deported unless they are serving parole.

Perhaps if she is not convicted of anything she can apply for a visitors visa. I think that's what the Aussie expats live there on. But it appears that the baby will not be granted dual American and Indonesian citizenship when it's born.

Not so in my country however. At the present time any child born on Canadian soil is an automatic Canadian citizen.

I love the selfie of him standing in his bathroom.

Hey Ladies! Feast your eyes, this is me in my terlet room. Rawr.

I finally finished all the threads, whew! There are so many great posters here, I'm impressed. It started out with me rubbing my grubby mitts together in anticipation of them living out the rest of their hellish existence in an awful Indonesian prison, but color me shocked at the turn this has taken!

:floorlaugh:

Welcome to the thread Snoods! You can either celebrate with us when Sheila gets justice or shake your head in disgust when one or both of them get off on a bribe. Could go either way. :dunno:

Today I checked the link below for another currency and the exchange rate from US dollar to Indonesian Rupiah.

With $150,000 starting to roll in HM can swim in pizza and cheeseburgers, pay for bribes she may even buy a epidural when labor starts. And of course keep the receipts. Jmo

Extra Thankyou for all the research on the citizenship issues - much appreciated!

It is Wednesday morning here, so we're only hours away from the start of the trial now.

Let's hope that there is a TON of media present. To keep us informed about what is going on, and to keep the trial in the headlines and hopefully keep the judiciary and the prosecution on the straight and narrow ... so they'll want to make an example of these two foreigners who came to their country with murder in mind AND thought they'd get away with it.

BBM: I do not think this is true - I know the Daily Mail published this info at one point, but I did a whole bunch of reading up on this earlier in the threads and it does not seem to be the case. And it actually is not the case in most countries. Just because a person is born in a country does not mean they get citizenship to that country. The baby's citizenship actually follows the parents' citizenship(s).

An Indonesian citizen is:

- one who before the enactment of this law was already an Indonesian citizen
- a child from a legal marriage whose parents are Indonesian citizens
- a child from a legal marriage whose father is an Indonesian citizen and mother is a foreign citizen
- a child from a legal marriage whose mother is an Indonesian citizen and father is a foreign citizen
- a child from a legal marriage whose mother is an Indonesian citizen and father is stateless or whose nationality law does not give citizenship to offspring
- a child from a legal marriage born within 300 days after the father's death and the father was an Indonesian citizen at the time of death
- a child from an illegal marriage whose mother is an Indonesian citizen
- a child from an illegal marriage whose mother is a foreign citizen but the father is an Indonesian citizen and recognizes the child as his child before the child turns 18 or is married
- a child born in Indonesian territory whose parent's citizenship status is unknown
- a newly born child found in Indonesian territory as long as the father and mother are unknown
- a child born in Indonesian territory if the parents are stateless or cannot be found
- a child born outside of Indonesian territory whose parents are Indonesian citizens and, because of the law where the child was born, the child was granted another citizenship
- a child from whose father or mother was already granted Indonesian citizenship but died before taking an oath of allegiance

Thank you for the info SouthAussie, I did wonder about that point myself.

Heather screwed both of them out of that for Hotel Kerobokian! Hope it was worth it to her, she'll never see that home again, let alone American shores.

Are these greedy lawyers for real? Do they realize that their client murdered this man's sister and stuffed her body in a suitcase?!? After years of abusing her? And they're surprised that he didn't want to help his niece get off on murder charges by giving her large sums of money to pay off a couple of bribes? And now they're speaking poorly of him in the press? While he is the one grieving Sheila's death and not the b$&@h she raised?

:gaah: I hate defense lawyers

Ultimately, Cook County Judge Neil H. Cohen ruled last month that Wiese, who oversees the trust, had to make $150,000 available for Mack’s defense.

But Wiese’s actions may have doomed Mack’s ongoing court case, the court papers say.

“William has not acted in Heather’s best interests,” Mack’s attorney alleges in the filing. “He called Heather’s mental capacity into question. . . . He cast Heather in a negative light by revealing sensitive and private information to the Chicago Tribune.”

Wiese declined to comment when reached Tuesday night.

But in a previous court filing, Wiese said he was concerned that Mack’s initial request to tap the trust lacked “oversight” and amounted to a “blank check” to Indonesian lawyer Ary Soenardi, whose practices Wiese found to be “suspect.”

In other words, her lawyers are claiming that Sheila's brother may have thwarted the bribe by refusing to give her money to pay it and by calling attention to it? Is that what her lawyers are trying to say?

I very much agree with you.

But I worry the trial, at least for a while, will not get extensive media coverage. Monday's hearing was poorly covered. For about a full day the only story to be found on the internet was the AP account by Firdia Lisnawati. Ni Komang Erviani's Jakarta Post story on the hearing wasn't even published on Monday -- it had a Tuesday dateline. I saw just two stories with other bylines: one in the Daily Mail and one at a Turkish source. But these two were clearly just re-writes of the AP story, which was made obvious by their repeating a small error from AP: the phrase "judges Made Suweda," when Made Suweda is a single person.

Even Chicago's two major papers, the Tribune and the Sun-Times, were very late publishing anything on Monday. Many smaller papers in the U.S. had already published the AP account by the time the Trib and S-T put their expanded versions of that report on the net. (And "expanded" only means adding background, not any new facts about what happened on Monday.)

There are lots of photogs snapping pictures, but this seems to be because much of the press sees the case as a circus and not a serious event. "Get a picture of Tommy crying, snap a photo of Heather with fried chicken." This seems to be the press mentality from the last two hearing dates, led obviously by the Daily Mail, known for its sensationalism.

I'm guessing, and you will know better, that the Australian press in Indonesia is right now first and foremost concerned with Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran. And given the pair's dire situation, I agree with editors who put that story first. But in the early days, some of the best stories on Sheila's murder were in the Australian press, so it is unfortunate to lose their interest.

So there may be lots of papers who will publish the AP account of today's proceedings, but that is only one source of info for us.

On the other hand, the trial really only starts today, with everything up to this point being preliminary wrangling. That could mean more reporters and I hope it does.

Heather Mack gives self-serving interview

Heather was interviewed by phone by the Chicago Tribune. Excerpts from their report:

Heather Mack, 19, told the Tribune in a series of telephone interviews Tuesday that she did not have a motive to kill her mother...

"I loved my mom with all my heart and miss her every day," said Mack...

Mack, speaking on a cellular phone that included a video feed, said she was compelled to contact her hometown newspaper because her Indonesian criminal defense attorney is not being paid from her trust fund as ordered.

Mack said her attorney, Aly Soenardi, received only the first payment. She blamed the three Chicago-area attorneys who have been assisting her with the trust issues and said she is seeking to have them fired...

[Judge] Cohen said the last two $50,000 payments would not be distributed to Soenardi until he provides an interim trustee with billing statements to explain what services were provided.

When asked about the prosecution's allegation that she tried to find a hit man, Mack said, "I can't answer that." Mack also refused to say what she thinks happened to her mother.

"If I allow myself to grieve whatsoever I'm in a complete state of depression," she told the Tribune. "The smile is actually a disguise I wear to survive here."

Mack said the motion to fire her Chicago-area civil attorneys may be filed as early as Wednesday in Cook County.

Also in the Tribune interview: Mack told reporters that she and Tommy are in a relationship but she would not elaborate, telling the Tribune only, "I am wearing a ring on my finger."

Wow! That doesn't sound like Tommy is dying to marry her, does it?!!!
