They may have to do a spinal tap to rule out bacterial meningitis.

ETA: neonatal bacterial meningitis: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neonatal_meningitis

It's very possible stella has two issues: jaundice which is common since she was born a little early and is small, and then whatever is causing her fever.

Symptoms:

The following is a list of common signs and symptoms found with neonatal meningitis.

Fever
poor appetite
anterior fontanelle bulging
seizure
jitteriness
dyspnea
irritability
anorexia
vomiting
diarrhea
abdominal distention (increase in abdominal size)
neck rigidity
cyanosis
jaundice
and sunset eyes (downward gaze of the eyes)
abnormal body temperature (hypo-or hyperthermia)
change of activity (lethargy or irritability)
Unfortunately these symptoms are unspecific and may point to many different conditions.[4]

If HM didn't breastfeed colostrum, Stella may be doomed. I think this baby is dangerously ill.

Baby Stella is already sick...

"While the problem has not been revealed, a prison source told Daily Mail Online that Miss Mack and guards became concerned when the baby, whom she was carrying back to her cell, started to ‘burn up’ on Tuesday.
But it was the yellow appearance of the baby’s skin that was causing the greatest worry.
With Miss Mack being concerned about the child’s health, doctors told guards at Kerobokan Prison that she wanted her boyfriend, who is being held in the men’s section, to be present in the clinic while the baby was being treated.
This was allowed and, according to sources, Miss Mack and Schaefer held hands while doctors attended to the child. "

Does anyone have an idea what the condition could be? My first thought would be jaundice... but did they really let it go untreated like that? Good grief

This train is off the tracks. Murders gathered with a baby in the prison clinic holding hands. The baby side show is ridiculous in a call with seven other inmates. I'll check back to see what the sentences will be. Maybe some way some how there will be justice for SVM. Jmo

Eric Dorkin deserves his $1000 back - if you ask me.
Prosecutor's chauffeuring HM around - incredible.

Do you think Cohen ever wonders where Soenardi is in all the stories coming out of Bali? Doesn't appear he made an appearance at the hospital. We've never seen him going in or out of Kerobokan to meet with his client. He never defends her in the press or says a word about this case. Kind of something you'd expect a lawyer with a $150,000 retainer to be doing. I believe he did speak out quite a bit before the money made its way over to him.

ETA: I also wonder if Cohen has been made aware that a one week stay in a VIP private hospital room, including surgery for a Caesarian section, came in at a total of around $6000 U.S. Kind of puts that retainer fee into perspective doesn't it?

Anyone know the status of a NICU in Bali? Is there one?

http://babyology.com.au/maternity/bali-babymoon-birth-sparks-pregnancy-travel-warning.html?COLLCC=1729990022

"Western Australia’s Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS) has helped five women who have given birth prematurely in Bali since 2010. Of those, two babies died before being transferred home. NETS consultant doctor Dr Jason Tan tells WA Today women should think carefully about travelling while pregnant and consider the services available at their destination.

“There’s no real cut-off point for travelling because complications of pregnancy and delivery can occur at any gestational age,” he says. “Bali doesn’t have a neonatal ICU so if your baby is to become very unwell, they may not be able to provide the services for your baby compared to if you were travelling interstate.”

So it seems Bali doesn't have a NICU. What happens is Stella gets transferred to Austraila? Or Singapore?

I can't believe the baby was in hospital for seven days before presenting with these symptoms. Particularily since she was supposedly slightly premature. I hope it's just infant jaundice that they can get a handle on.

Poor Stella. She's likely at so much risk and very sick, yet when I first read that post my thoughts automatically went to HM using her as a pawn to see TS.

Maybe this will get her to see the baby isn't a toy. Oh. Wait..... Nevermind.

ETA: the baby isn't a prisoner. What obligation does the jail have to transport a non-prisoner to the hospital and back?

This is no average prison. I'm sure they'd have no problem transporting Stella to the hospital and taking her parents as well.

I think that the medical unit is within the prison. It was mentioned when HM was sent to the hospital once during her pregnancy for bleeding, it said she was examined there and the medical staff determined she should go to the hospital. Pretty much the same as prisons in the state.

This is why I think it may not be primary jaundice.

With my small slightly pre term infant, he presented immediately. Within 5-6 days it was gone.

Reports from a jail source say that the baby will be kept in the clinic under observation while her mother remains in her cell.
But if the child, born a few weeks prematurely, does not improve within the next 48 hours she will have to be returned to hospital.
‘There seems no doubt that the baby needs pretty intensive treatment,’ said the jail visitor after talking to prison officials. ‘It may be that she will have to be returned to hospital within a few hours.’

This baby is on track to be a statistic.

  • #93
It does seem odd that the child was OK for the first week of her life but almost immediately got sick after going 'home'.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's sanitation-related. HM never had younger siblings. She doesn't know the first thing about babies. She is in an environment where sanitation is a greater concern, even for adults, than in a normal home environment.

Slightly OT: twice during the video of HM leaving the hospital, I heard her cough. Either she had a cold or she's smoking again.

This was allowed and, according to sources, Miss Mack and Schaefer held hands while doctors attended to the child.
Schaefer had first set his eyes on his baby daughter on Monday afternoon after his girlfriend returned from the Sanglah Hospital, where she gave birth to the baby via caesarian.
He was escorted by guards to Miss Mack’s cell where, in a tearful meeting, he held his daughter in his arms, tears running down his face.

Well this will just cement TS's resolution to "take one for the team".

Love to know what his mother is thinking/feeling.

My Bold...

IIRC - Soenardi rule No 1 - shut up and dont say anything.
Maybe he takes his own advice ...

From the article: [h=1]Leeza Ormsby's playbook on how to get off a drug charge lightly[/h]http://www.smh.com.au/world/leeza-ormsbys-playbook-on-how-to-get-off-a-drug-charge-lightly-20140702-zstsq.html
But Soenardy’s deep knowledge of the arts (some of them presumably dark) of the Indonesian judicial system got Ponder a mere six-year sentence for possession of a different batch of cocaine in his house. The hapless courier – British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford – was sentenced to the firing squad.
For Ormsby, Soenardy was on the scene on the very first night – he’d been contacted by her ex-boyfriend, Sydney DJ Marco ''Marcotix'' Mazzucco. Mazzucco was also questioned about the drugs but walked free that night.

Soenardy’s advice to the petrified 37-year-old Ormsby would have been, once again: ''Shut up.''

No tell-all, Corby-style interviews with Channel Nine, protesting her innocence and questioning the Indonesian justice system, no incidental comments, paid or unpaid, to journalists of any kind.
To police, though, he would have told her to repeat one mantra: the joint in her bag was hers, the other drugs were not. Be polite and co-operative.

So there is also another complication with this coming into play -
Horrible question but,
with poor baby Stella ill - where will the money come from to treat her?

  • #97
Drain the trust fund. Sad for svwm's family, but oh well. By the time HM gets back to the states: indigent. See how her plan worked to get her money...

As I pointed out, it's very inexpensive comparatively speaking to get top notch medical care in Bali. WAY less expensive than say, a defence lawyer retainer fee. ;)

I'm sure Cohen will make sure those bills are taken care of. What would really be interesting is if Stella has to be medi-vacced to another country like Australia. Now THAT would take a good chunk of change out of HM's inheritance.

Oh the irony if once all is said and done, HM is left completely broke as a single parent within a year.

A medivac is a good 150k: neonatal infant is critical condition probably a lot more. Let's say 300k.

It is probably 10k a day for NICU treatment in a first world country. (The baby isn't a resident of any country she would likely be transferred to). I guess she will learn that a sick child is a huge drain on money.

How much has been dispersed already?

I was under the impression that the only beneficiary named was HM - and not Stella (or any other child).

I can only find the one quote right now - but I think there was a discussion about this in the early threads...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-bali-trust-allegations-met-20150227-story.html
Months before her violent death last summer, Sheila von Wiese-Mack named her only child sole beneficiary. The woman named her brother, William, as trustee until her daughter's 30th birthday.
