An Indonesian court has convicted an American man of murdering his girlfriend's mother and sentenced him to 18 years in jail.

The Denpasar District Court ruled Tuesday that Tommy Schaefer, 21, was guilty of battering Sheila von Wiese-Mack to death in a hotel room on the resort island of Bali.

incredible .. they execute people for drugs but 18 yrs for beating an old lady to death and trying to carry her off in a suitcase .. judges must've been paid off .. this makes no sense

Tommy got an 18 yr. sentence as was suggested. Hope this means Heather will get, at least, a 15 yr. sentence.

Still wonder how they avoided the firing squad. It was premeditated and they were both involved!

I guess maybe I am not as disappointed because here he would probably get about the same ... maybe a tad more, around the 20 year mark. But then there is parole to consider.

Our courts and parole boards are often quite pathetic, and we don't even bribe them. :sigh:

Nothing yet ... as far as I know. I think they were going for premeditated for her too. But she was hiding in the bathroom and didn't do the deed.


Yep .. hers is premeditated murder as well.

She is also accused of premeditated murder, and could be handed the death penalty as judges are not obliged to follow sentence recommendations.

She maintains her innocence, and her indictment says she hid in the bathroom during the killing.

"We are shocked at the very heavy sentence," said defense lawyer Edi Iswahyudi. It was not immediately clear if the defense planned to appeal.

My condolences to SvWM's family for this utter slap in the face amount of sentencing that HM got.

No wonder HM was smiling on her way to court today.
She sets her boyfriend up to kill her mother - and I have no doubt she was part of the murder in the Hotel room as well - as she gets 10 years.
