One other interesting little tidbit: IIRC, the FBI wasn't able to access HM's phone. I don't recall ever reading what the issue was; I assumed perhaps she had password-protected it. We know she had at least one cellphone confiscated in prison already, but we do not know if it was her original phone. We don't even know where her original phone is right now.

AFAIK, the text messages the FBI have retrieved are all from TS's or RB's phones.

TS has already taken a hit for HM (well, HM's $$$) - will RB do the same? Or will he do anything he can to protect himself?

I am really hoping this goes to trial and he doesn't get a plea deal. If it goes to trial, unlike Indonesia, we should have more visibility of what's going on.

Perhaps the issue with HM's iPhone is similar to what the FBI is experiencing with Apple over the terrorist Syed Farook's (one of the San Bernardino shooters) phone. Apple has refused to unlock it. If HM refused to give the FBI the passcode, there's little they could do about it, so it would seem.

Apple unlocked at least 70 iPhones before refusing to hack into terrorist’s device

Sounds to me like if they need to they will.

IIRC wasn't there was some trouble with the unlocking of Oscar Pistorius's iPhone too? I can't remember if the South African authorities were ever able to extract the data, although one of their representatives did travel to the Apple HQ in the USA.

Sounds to me like if they need to they will.

It depends on the model of the phone.

If it's an older phone, Apple does have the technical ability to unlock it. The later versions are much more secure, and even Apple currently can not 'unlock' them without destroying everything after 10 failed attempts.

In order to access the newer locked phones, Apple will have to write new code to create access to ALL newer Apple phones. That could take time. After all, the encryption protections were designed by Apple to be foolproof.

HM must have password-protected her phone - possibly because she didn't want her mother accessing it, possibly in Indonesia shortly after her arrest. TS and RB either didn't password protect their phones or they gave up the passwords to the authorities. Personally, I don't use a password, partly because my phone is too cheap for anyone to want to steal and partly because I find it a bit of a hassle.

If (and that's a big 'if') HM's phone is an older model, then the FBI can ask for a warrant and Apple does have the means to access it.

Either way, just from what we've seen posted, it would appear that the FBI has enough to nail HM, TS and RB on conspiracy to murder charges just from what they've gotten from RB and TS phones.

I hope I'm right on that!

In other news, the Canadian teacher, Neil Bantleman, who had his conviction overturned on appeal has now had it re-instated by the Supreme Court, along with his Indonesian co-accused, adding an extra year to the original sentence of 10 years. I guess they didn't collect enough money? :waitasec:

The court system over there is outrageous. There is absolutely no evidence against him (or any of the others) other than the word of the parents who are trying to sue the school and their coached children. There were originally 6 people charged with this. 6 pedophiles don't usually meet up in a school environment to molest children.

But with mountains of premeditated evidence of murder against TS and HM, they get basically the same sentence and have their sentences reduced each holiday as a reward?

Which one again reinforces my decision that even if I won a free trip, I'd never travel to Indonesia.

Me neither. Wouldn't it be great if Canada issued a travel security notice to its citizens about going to Indonesia? This case, (HM/TS/SVWM) has taught me a lot about corruption in other countries. Its almost as if, they smell any money on you, you are a target to the authorties.

Something I've been pondering on while waiting for news:

HM first talked to TS about murdering her mother in February. IIRC, around May, she texted TS, asking him not to tell everybody that she'd asked him to kill SWM.

She said SWM had 'almost died' multiple times and that it had scared her.

What was she talking about? How had SWM 'almost died'? Had TS been trying to poison her with pain/sleeping pills?

That case upsets me to no end. I didn't know about this development.
Thx for sharing.

I think so.

After the initial trial, they had one week to appeal their sentences. They did, but the appeal failed - because HM couldn't get $200K for an up front, no questions asked, single payment to Soenardi.

There is the possibility for another appeal, no time limit, but until she can get her hands on $$, there's no point in filing it.

Stella has now been in prison with her mother for just over a year.

I was recently thinking that Stella must be 1 now. Btw-the next court date is 4/14.

HEATHER MACK HOSPITALIZED IN BALI, ATTORNEY SAYS

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The attorney for Heather Mack, jailed in Bali after being convicted in the murder of her mother Sheila Von Wiese Mack, says she has been hospitalized after vomiting blood.

In a press release, Michael D. Elkin of Elkin & Associates said Mack vomited blood Wednesday morning and was taken to the hospital. Elkin said they are still working to determine the cause of the internal bleeding but said, "We imagine that the scare shall be nothing more than just a scare."

Elkin also said that he will be asking a judge to investigate whether her uncle, William Wiese, breached his duty as Successor-Trustee of Mack's trust fund and "failed to take affirmative steps to provide for the well-being of Heather."

Is Elkin kidding?! He thinks that WW is responsible for HM getting sick over there by not providing for her well being? Can't be the 19 packs of Marlboro cigarettes she was just flaunting on her IG can it Elkin? Everyone has seen how well she eats, drinks and parties over there. She was just out touring around Bali with Stella and no guards according to her. Don't even go there. :snooty:

So what is she trying to get now by faking an illness? More money? Is the well running dry for cell phone, cigarettes and junk food?

No word on where Stella is or who is taking care of her.

Elkin's statement sounds like he doesn't think it's all that serious. Does he know something we don't?

Stella is likely either in the hospital with her, being babysat by all her "best friends" in her cell, being babysat by all her favourite guards that let her roam free in the streets of Bali or being babysat by "Osha" and family who will likely be taking care of her after the 2 years are up.

And Elkin probably knows she's either faking it because something is coming up in the courts or perhaps has a stomach ulcer.

A Chicago woman convicted of helping to kill her mother while on vacation in Bali is being hospitalized after vomiting blood, according to a news release from her attorney.

The total amount of blood she lost was unknown and her attorneys were coordinating efforts to have her taken to the hospital to identify the source of the internal bleeding, according to a news release Wednesday from her attorney, Michael Elkin, who says he's now representing her in any civil proceedings.

"We imagine that the scare shall be nothing more than just a scare," the release states.
