Baltimore, MD - Container Ship Strikes Francis Scott Key Bridge - Mass Casualty Situation

The Guardian: Baltimore Key Bridge collapse: vehicles fall into water after being hit by ship

The Baltimore fire department said it was searching for at least seven people believed to be in the water, after reports that a large vessel had crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The ship caught fire before reportedly sinking.
---
“All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland Transportation Authority posted on X.
---
Calls to 911 had come in at about 1.30am, reporting a vessel travelling outbound from Baltimore that had struck a column on the bridge, causing it to collapse, said Kevin Cartwright, the director of communications for the Baltimore fire department. Several vehicles were on the bridge at the time, including one the size of a tractor-trailer.
---
Synergy Marine Group, the manager of the Dali, confirmed that the ship had collided with one of the pillars of the bridge. It said all crew members, including the two pilots, had been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

I haven't seen any reports that the ship caught fire and sank. Is that true, or was that an early report before all the details were known?

I think it did catch fire to some degree, as IMO I can see a flame in the video of the bridge collapsing (at the same the Guardian article). But it might have been minor and not spread, I suppose.

That video is something else. All those poor people. I'm genuinely shocked and very saddened.
What a horrible thing to wake up to! I use the tunnel to get to work but that bridge is usually HEAVILY traveled all day long! I can't imagine - I'd probably have a heart attack if that happened. Terrifying! I hate that anybody was on it ☹️ but just think how much worse if it had been rush hour!

I hope that's not the case. I'm sure many have watched the video with bated breath, willing the traffic to speed across before the impact.
They're just repeating what was said by Baltimore City Fire Department.

They say they're looking for seven in the water. I'm guessing that due to traffic cams, that number is probably pretty solid. If anything, it may go up a bit if any vehicle had more than one occupant.

MOO

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

The New York Times reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

"All crew members, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," the firm said in a statement, per shipping news outlet TradeWinds.

Danish shipping company Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

I think you meant to link the article, not the homepage, @ilovewings . Here:

BALTIMORE (AP) — A major bridge in Baltimore snapped and collapsed after a container ship rammed into it early Tuesday, and several vehicles fell into the river below. Rescuers were searching for at least seven people in the water.

The vessel appears to have hit one of the supports of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the roadway to break apart in several places and plunge into the water, according to a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The ship caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.

“This is a dire emergency,” Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore Fire Department, told The Associated Press. “Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people.”

[..]

The ship is called “Dali,” according to Cartwright. A vessel by that name was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, as its final destination, according to Marine Traffic and Vessel Finder. The ship was flying under a Singapore flag, WTOP radio station reported, citing Petty Officer Matthew West from the Coast Guard in Baltimore.

Mayor Brandon M. Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. posted that emergency personnel were responding and rescue efforts were underway.
