Bangor Makes It Illegal to Smoke in Cars

Well if anyone was standing behind or next to me when I have a gas attack they would wish I had lit up a cigarette instead

Maybe not, Penelope....if they were to light up the flames could ignite the odiferous fumes emanating from your rear orifice! :p

Your humor is totally appreciated! :blowkiss:

All humor aside, I think Eve, Tybee and others on here (on both sides of the fence) have some very valid points. I'll tell ya what, I'll quit smoking IN MY OWN CAR AT STOPLIGHTS when anti-smokers (there's a difference between a non-smoker and an anti-smoker) quit driving their air-polluting vehicles. So sell those babies and buy a bicycle. Deal? Oh, by the way, I'd also appreciate it if they'd quit using any products that come from a factory that emits hazardous fumes into the air, water or land. I have a garden each year and I'm absolutely terrified that some of those pollutants are getting into the soil and into my food. So if you want me to be reponsibile for your health, kindly reciprocate. Also, since they are making their health my responsibility, I'm recommending that each and every one of them that are significantly overweight be placed on a medically supervised diet and exercise regime (that bike that they'll be using in lieu of a car will help immensely). They will die from their weight-related co-morbidities far sooner than they will from getting a brief whiff of my smoke while at a stoplight, for cryin' out loud.

I'm seeing a lot of the pot calling the kettle black here. People who are totally against smoking and whine about it affecting THEIR health are buzzing all around town in pollutant-emitting vehicles, using products manufactured at plants that pollute the air, land and water far more than cigarettes do but guess what...who cares because THEY are benefitting from driving a vehicle and using these products. Big time double standard. But it's easier to point fingers at people instead of corporations, isn't it?

Before anyone says "Vehicles are a necessity and cigarettes are not". No, vehicles are not. They are a convenience. People got around via their own legs or by use of a horse/buggy before the invention of the auto and other mechanical means of transportation.

Edited to add: I do believe smokers should be considerate but this is just getting over-policed. To the poster who complained about inhaling smoke while at a stoplight, are you complaining as heartily about inhaling the exhaust emitting from other people's vehicles.......and YOUR OWN VEHICLE, at that? Ever smell that on a hot, steamy summer day? Pew! I'm going to echo the sentiment of "live in a bubble".

Maybe I missed something but I thought the law was to keep children from having to be inside a closed up car with an adult smoking?

I'm not worried about driving by a car with a smoker in it that's just plain nonsense.

I agree. If an adult wants to kill themselves with smoking what do I care? Leave the kids some air though.

I found this excellent and entertaining article written by a man who smoked for many years. The guy is a very good writer and I think people on both sides of the smoking problem might enjoy reading wether they share his point of view or not.

What I found to be especially interesting is his quote:

"I cannot locate this so-called ''right'' in the Declaration of Independence, nor in our Constitution. I gave the Bill of Rights an especially careful and thorough perusal in search of it."

It absolutely astounds me that people think this! (I'm not just attacking this guy, I've seen and heard it in alot of places lately.)

I have always been a proponent of our public school system, maybe because I've been fortunate enough to see good ones all around me; but I am starting to wonder about the quality of our civics classes.

I recall being young and the teachers smoked in our classrooms, right at their desks... Hell one was pregnant.

Now for me to say that makes smoking around kids OK would equate to me recalling slavery and saying that is Ok ...
Its not.
However..... I like all that Eve and Tybee posted.
This is out of hand. As a parent I do not need the government to intrude upon how I raise my children.
Smoking in my car?? Spare me! Isn't Maine one of those places that had an industry that poisoned hundreds???

I think it was a movie with John Travolta... About a tannery and the chemicals made a bunch of people sick because they were buried and contaminated the water... It was based on a true story.
At any rate I still contend that these issues need to be legislated and true child abuse long and well before second hand smoke.
