Am wondering about cocaine charge versus manslaughter with a fine?

Why did Jasmine give in to the manslaughter charge?

This is an incredibly posh island. Inhabited by very,very rich people who probably only arrive and depart by private jet. The capital city is much poorer. And doesnt feel safe . IMO

Drugs are a big issue, Belize being a transport post via air or sea via the big producers from further south. Authorities, including police have been caught in raids.

I am not very far from Belize, have been twice to evaluate projects there.

The big problems are drug trafficking and money laundering.

Drug trafficking brings a longer sentence than manslaughter with negligence. Indeed if you Google that you will find sentences of 17 years etc for drug trafficking.

You will also find cases of police collaboration in drug transport.

All of this happens, especially if you are loaded with cash and maybe have some unscruplent accountants, some huge projects.

Don’t read into this too much. The islands have a totally different perspective on life. Most of you are trying to understand this situation as if it happened in Nebraska. It didn’t. If you’ve ever traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, you would understand the life. Much like we could not understand how Madeline McCann’s parents left the children to sleep without a sitter, or a Danish woman left a child in a pram outside a New York cafe while she visited with friends, this shooting was not an aberration. I believe it was most likely an accident. But the sequence of events leading up to the fatal shot, are everyday occurrences. The culture is so different from US, Canadian and perhaps even British life, that it just doesn’t seem real. But it is real. Laid back laissez faire attitude with mixed races, proliferation of drugs, and rampant corruption is the rule in Belize as well as many other countries, especially island countries in the Caribbean. It is not the exception. Order, discipline and structure are uncommon. That’s why they are so incredibly poor. It’s all stolen at each level by everyone who can put their hands on any part of the money before it trickles down to where the needs are the greatest. It like the old Soviet system. If you lived behind the Iron Curtain before it fell, you would understand this culture. In Vegas, the house keeps about 4% of the money that crosses the tables. 96% is returned to customers as winnings. The odds are reversed in Belize, the Caribbean or Soviet Russia and it’s satellites.
Her treatment, the magistrate rulings, his family’s “outcry” of the crime, is all a big production. She was jailed so it looks good in the news. The magistrate has ruled against bail because he’s probably waiting for some form of payola and he did not receive it in time or in a sufficient amount. He sent her to the mainland so that those officials could also partake in the corruption rewards, and accept a bribe to continue the work. The family will receive hush money, especially that sister. On paper, she’ll be fined $10,000.00. Don’t believe that’s all she’ll pay. It will be a million or more that’s spread around everywhere to keep her from going to jail, from losing her marriage and her children. Lord Ashcroft is worth as much as the ENTIRE GNP of Belize. She is related to him, and believe me, the family will be paying royally for this incident. They’re keeping DM from accepting comments on the articles. I’m sure they are keeping others from reporting the truth, as well. It’s all part of the fabric of life there. It’ll all be ok after everyone has been compensated.

SUPREME COURT BAIL HEARING FOR JASMINE HARTIN TO OCCUR TODAY

Reliable reports reaching our newsroom suggest that Attorneys for Jasmine Hartin will appear before a Judge in the Supreme Court today for an 'Urgent Bail Application Hearing'. Normally bail application hearing are held on Fridays, but however our records shows that there have been hearings held on other days. In particular there have been hearings held on the same day that an accused was denied bail in the lower court , like in the case of a Customs Officer who was once accused of a firearm offence.

They’re keeping DM from accepting comments on the articles. I’m sure they are keeping others from reporting the truth, as well. It’s all part of the fabric of life there. It’ll all be ok after everyone has been compensated.

The reason the DM is not taking comments is because Belize used to be a British colony and is still part of the Commonwealth with the Queen as its monarch and a Governor General. They would still follow the law structure of the UK in which a case cannot be discussed until the court case is over, like the Sarah Everard case.

This is such an interesting take! Thank you for sharing your insights. I also noticed that the Daily Mail was not accepting comments on articles about this case. I have never seen that before and found it quite curious!

I keep thinking she has a substance abuse problem.

I can see her as a very rich, bored, social wife bound to her husband's hotel on this tiny island/ key, in a poor backwater country.

Maybe husband isn't very attentive, Children being raised by nannies. Seeking attention, distraction. Easy target for substance abuse.

I wonder what the family did for the year + of the COVID shutdown? Hotel closed, country shut down, same small group of ex-pats and same old faces every day.

I'll bet a lot of dynamics changed.

The passing boat story might be rumour. I think her story is that they were fooling around with the gun when it discharged. I understood that his body was partially on her, and in pushing him off he ended up in the water. I don't think she had a chance to run for help. When the gun shot was heard, people came immediately and found her in distress.

Jasmine Hartin’s Bail Hearing Adjourned

A few moments ago Supreme Court Justice Herbert Lord read his order, adjourning the hearing to Wednesday June 9th at 9:30am.

Justice Lord read that the DPP objected to bail because Jasmine Hartin is considered a flight risk. He requested both sides to make written submissions accompanied by case law before the hearing. Hartin remains at the Belize Central Prison. Log into Facebook

CASE ADJOURNED

Hartin will remain behind bars through the weekend after Supreme Court Justice Herbert Lord adjourned Attorney Godfrey Smith’s bail request until next week.

Smith said outside the courthouse in downtown Belize City: ‘The matter has been adjourned. The public prosecution filed a short statement, just one sentence saying we object. On the basis of flight risk, nothing further.’

He said the judge has asked for full submissions to be filed by Friday. Smith also indicated that the judge disapproves of all the media attention that this case has garnered.

Lord Ashcroft’s daughter-in-law Jasmine Hartin sees bail hearing delayed in Belize

"Judge Lord, who presided over the hearing, criticised the wave of rumours about the case currently spreading on social media, and asked that the Prosecutor’s office – who allegedly submitted a document simply reading ‘We object to bail on the basis of flight risk’ - to provide full submissions, including case law.

The judge has given Ms Lovell and her office until Friday to do so.

With the case now adjourned until next Wednesday (9 June), Ms Hartin will remain in the notorious Belize General Prison outside the town of Hattieville until further notice.

After the conclusion of the hearing – which lasted barely more than 5 minutes – Ms Lovell confirmed that she would be providing the information that Judge Lord had requested, asserting that the Officer of the Public Prosecutor believed that Ms Hartin presented a “serious flight risk”.

In response, Ms Hartin’s legal team – lead by former Belize Attorney General Godfrey Smith – were left unimpressed by the manner of the objections.

While Mr Smith would not comment on the nature of the allegations against his clients, he asserted the importance of the press in regulating the widespread allegations against Ms Hartin."

Interesting points about the Ashcroft's influence in Belize.

In this article is a picture of the jetty with the blood on it ..... it looks very much like it’s in the middle of the jetty , bearing in mind the bullet was in the head region . Don’t you think that looks a long way to have “pushed him off” that he just so happened to end up in the sea ??? (Do you think that looks to far in the middle for him to be sitting with his legs dangling over the edge how we guessed he might be sitting to get a shoulder massage ??) (I go back to thinking he looks a tall gentleman and her not so tall so I can’t see her massaging him whilst both stood up, plus they were drinking , I don’t think you’d stand up for that when you were a bit tipsy and chatting about stuff, it would be interesting to know where the drink cups/bottles were found on jetty) (so that would leave sitting in the middle of jetty together.... then it’s a fair amount of distance to end up pushing him off & the sea)

This DM article makes the statement that earlier that day the Ashcrofts had attended a party on San Pedro. I don't think that has been reported before.

DM should also remove that drone photo of the end of the pier

The blood is very clearly at the FAR end of the pier, not the middle

The story of her asking him about self-defence has a plausible basis, in part, as the story for this death:

He comes to the party that afternoon. She asks him about getting a weapon for self-defense, now that he will be leaving for his post on the mainland.

Drinks and whatever ensue.

But he decides to show her how to use a gun and shoot.

So they leave the company of others at the party/ hotel and walk to the adjacent pier. That hotel has not yet opened so there won't be guests to observe. Gun laws are quite restrictive in Belize, but it is possible for a citizen or permanent resident to have them legally. I'd be surprised if her husband didn't have several weapons, for self-protection.

Anyway, if you want to show someone about a gun, the end of a pier would be a reasonable choice - not easy to observe from the shore, can shoot toward the water so as not to put others at risk.

However, doing this while intoxicated, or using drugs, in the dark is clearly unsafe and grounds for at least manslaughter, IMHO.

And from all accounts, there was only one shot and it came from behind him.

So why the now conflicting stories about the massage, or the boat?
