BOSTON (CBS) – Police executed a new search warrant Wednesday at the home where Bella Bond, the toddler previously known as “Baby Doe” was allegedly murdered by her mother’s boyfriend.
It is unclear what evidence police are searching for as they execute the search warrant in Dorchester.
“We did execute a warrant at the target location today. I will not say what items were taken. It is not uncommon to execute subsequent warrants at a target location as new information is developed,” a State Police spokesman said.

Boston Police Commissioner Talks Bella

Thursday, Evans shared his thoughts on a case that is on everyone's minds - the murder of Bella Bond, formerly known as "Baby Doe," allegedly by her mother's boyfriend.

"It's a sad case," said Evans. "I'm glad that we were able to work with the state police and come up with a name."

Michael McCarthy is charged with Bella's murder. The child's mother, Rachelle Bond, is charged as an accessory after the fact. Both were arrested after Bella was identified Friday following a call to Boston Police.

"We got a call in to our 911 operator, who did an outstanding job - she kept the caller on the line for about eight minutes or so," said Evans. "At that point, she was able to turn them over to one of our homicide detectives, who got the information. Then, we relayed it to the state police, and then we worked hand in hand on Maxwell Street."

Late this summer, driven by drugs and haunted by spirits nobody else could see, McCarthy began telling people that his live-in girlfriend&#8217;s toddler daughter was filled with demons. But by that time, 2-year-old Bella Bond was already dead, her body stuffed in the apartment refrigerator, and later tossed into the harbor.


In a group session this summer, according to a patient who gave his name as J.P., McCarthy said his little dog could sense that Bella was a demon, and barked at her. Another group therapy patient said McCarthy spoke of experiencing a vision in which the girl came to him sleepwalking, and he got up to put her back to bed, only to imagine her again.

Hunched over and ruddy-faced, often clutching the tiny, matted dog, McCarthy, 35, was prone to bizarre outbursts, those who came into contact with him in recent years said. Adrift following the death of his mother in 2013, McCarthy wore the same clothes every day, rarely washed his long, greasy blonde hair, and smelled foul.


His slide into strangeness and violence was so obvious that when they heard what he&#8217;d allegedly done, former acquaintances were horrified and disgusted &#8212; but not necessarily surprised.

In August 2014, he and his then-girlfriend moved in with McMahon, who said he finally kicked them both out this winter. They stayed briefly at his father&#8217;s Hancock Street plumbing shop. The girlfriend left him.


He grew his hair long, but started haphazardly shaving the dog. He was a fixture around the Topeka Street methadone clinic, slinking in on mornings he couldn&#8217;t afford heroin.


&#8220;I used to call him the dog boy,&#8221; said one man who also frequented the clinic. &#8220;He said he was a psychic reader or something,&#8221; the man said. &#8220;Like he could tell what was going to happen to people.&#8221;

It's unclear when exactly Bond and McCarthy met, but friends tell PEOPLE that he was a bad influence on the 40-year-old mom, who'd struggled with drug abuse in the past herself. "When he came about, I feel like she got worse with the drugs," Dominiquea Price says.

"She was clean [before she met McCarthy]," insists another friend, Bonnie Thibodeau. "She'd gotten clean for Bella."

Sprinsky was walking with Bond one day when Bond told him that she had recently quit using drugs. When Sprinksy suggested she might be able to get Bella back now that she was clean, Bond broke down in tears, Deakin said, relaying Sprinsky's account.

Bella Bond case: Michael McCarthy told cop in 2005, 'It&#8217;s the drugs'


In September 2005, a Quincy policeman pulled up to the Walmart on the southern side of the Boston suburb.

Inside, sitting with two in-store security officers, was Michael Patrick McCarthy. He had a backpack, with mostly Gillette razors and cartridges inside. His partner, whom he had met through Narcotics Anonymous, had run away.

McCarthy apologized, according to the police report written up afterwards and available inside Quincy District Court.

&#8220;It was an ******* thing to do,&#8221; McCarthy said.

&#8220;It&#8217;s the drugs,&#8221; he stated (the police officer put &#8220;heroin&#8221; in parentheses next to the quote).

&#8220;It&#8217;s a **** way to live,&#8221; McCarthy added.

But the visits changed in 2013, with Quinn saying Rachelle Bond made frequent excuses not to visit. When she did bring the baby to see her grandmother, the visits were brief.

&#8220;I thought something was wrong, I really did. I said, &#8216;I hope she is not getting hurt,&#8217;&#8221; Quinn said.

Quinn said she last saw her granddaughter in May 2014. She and Drake tried without success to reach Rachelle Bond, and Quinn could not understand why Bond&#8217;s family and friends did not contact her.

According to the complaint, police interviewed McCarthy on Friday, and he told them that Bond had said the state took Bella sometime around Easter. He didn't know the details, the complaint said, but he called Bond "a good mother" and described Bella's living conditions as "safe and appropriate."

When police told him that his story differed from Bond's, McCarthy said Bond might be trying to "save her own ," denied having anything to do with Bella's death and requested a lawyer."
