Found Deceased Benjamin Stephen Oberto, 45, 13 November 2024 disappeared after leaving restaurant in Crystal Lake, IL

I haven't been here in forever, but this case captured my attention. Based on the information available, my guess is he was going to take 90 east to 294 and go North, home. 90 east from Elgin has a 70 Mph speed limit, so while it might appear out of the way, time wise it's faster.

I looked at the toll information for 90. See link.

All of the *tolls are for exits. The first eastbound open toll isn't until the O'Hare area at Devon. We know he didn't pass through that toll, or exit.

It was raining Wednesday night, and wet leaves are like hitting black ice. I'd look for evidence of a wreck on the south side/eastbound lanes starting prior to the Devon Toll Plaza and working west. It's possible he lost control of the car and went off the road to an area that isn't visible from the road.

Hoping he is located soon.
So nice to see you @Cubby!
Like you, I have not been here forever either. Great post! I am hoping he is found soon also. Your post makes so much sense.

Interview with his wife on tonight's WISN news out of Milwaukee:
New Berlin Dad, Ben Oberto, Missing for Two Days

Illinois State police would be the lead in this case as they are responsible for all Tollways.

There are a lot of left over parts of cars along the expressways and Tollways all the time. That wouldn't stand out to regular commuters. There may be evidence of a crash through a fence along 90. There are some wooded areas in the south side of 90.

8:56pm - Surveillance footage showed him leaving the restaurant
9:02pm - his car exiting the parking lot
9:27pm - I-Pass registered at the Elgin Plaza
9:47pm - phone was last pinged in the Rosemont area

police confirm he never went to O’Hare

Locations related to Ben Oberto missing person investigation

….

Police also checked the area and found no signs of Oberto, his vehicle or his phone at any businesses, hotels, morgues or hospitals.

Ben is a friend of a friend of mine and that friend has been instrumental from very early on in getting Ben’s case out there. I don’t have any verified insider info to share, but just wanted to say I hope Ben is found as this feels close to home.

Seeing his route and phone pings, it looks clear that driving in the opposite direction of his home in New Berlin, WI was intentional and was not seemingly being done by force (if he had a phone call during that time, though we don’t know who that phone call was with or its content). It’s strange though that he hasn’t been obviously spotted by cameras after the toll plaza (though maybe they haven’t really looked). It’s such a busy area, there would be cameras everywhere. JMO

Thinking about Ben’s family and friends and his two children. It is a really difficult time for them. I hope if he’s out there and is able, he can reach out just to let them know he’s okay.

I know Ben. He is very intelligent, smart, easy-going guy, and passionate about his work. I don’t believe he would have become so intoxicated at Restaurant 1776—one of his regular accounts—that he’d completely lose his sense of direction, unless he thought he was going to get back home faster by reaching Rosemont first and then heading straight north to New Berlin, perhaps avoiding a more direct route in the pouring rain.

We don’t know who he spoke to on the phone after leaving the restaurant; this person might (or might not) know more about his movements. I hope he's found safe soon.

Facebook post from local police with interesting comments, but seems like some of the confusion may be based on how Facebook shows timestamps on posts.

sometimes people in other timezones don't take it into account when they're viewing someone's FB

you've been missed
glad you jumped back in for this case

Again another strange case, makes me think of the other case we’re discussing

I thought of that case too but I look at this picture and think there's just no way he'd leave his children.

More information with cctv proof of time he drove out of restaurant parking lot:
Last spoke with wife at 6PM
Left restaurant at 8:56 pm, seen driving away @ 9:02 pm
9:26 PM made phone call to colleague
9:27 PM IPass went through toll at 9:27 pm Toll Plaza 9
9:47 PM Phone last pinged at 9:47 PM Rosemont
***Is there a chance he got disoriented, thusly heading south instead of north? His wife seems to know his schedule and
was instantly concerned when he didn't pick up the phone.

I can not open your link. Also, was not aware of "pouring rain" until I read your post. I'm SoCal and avoid driving in the rain (ya' know it doesn't rain often here)...the glare on the road makes it so difficult to drive at night, people don't drive slower.

This article clarifies that he was at the 1776 restaurant for work (I would assume they mean the restaurant was one of his clients, not like he was at a work dinner).

I’ve been meaning to ask, he was familiar with the area and driving at night?
