I'm going to have a coronary if this is related to BD/SA ...

he was drunk and he struggled with the officer after pointing the gun at him!!!

and what about the presence of his car alerted the police officer? I wonder if someone called in a strange car or if he knows someone in that area?

he's destroyed himself now - maybe this will be the final straw to get him sober ... but if the DUI fatality wasn't enough, then sadly probably not

...snipped...

Lots and lots of alcohol and drugs

But only in that one part of town. :kimsterwink:

Are any of our locals familiar with this lawyer's reputation? I'll bet he wasn't well thought of before this happened.

Well, Billie shouldn't have any trouble filing a complaint against her lawyer:

State Bar of Texas
Complaints against your lawyer

If you have problems with your lawyer, we are here to help. If you have questions, call us at (800)932-1900. You may also download the complaint form in English or Spanish [PDF files]

Here are some examples of lawyer conduct that may violate the disciplinary rules:*

My attorney does not return my phone calls, emails, or letters.
My attorney failed to appear in court or has missed deadlines.
I've called my attorney many times, but cannot get any information about my case.
My attorney refuses to return my file even though I have asked for it.
My attorney seems to have a substance abuse problem that affects his ability to practice.
My case has settled but my attorney has not paid me my part of the settlement.

Nothing on his record? Must have been more than 10 years ago. Only offenses in the last ten years are available to the public.

Here ya go Knox. It is in the archives of the Abilene Reporter News. Mr. Young was intoxicated while driving and his female companion was killed. The story is from 2004 and the accident happened in 1989. It is confirmed and he has spoken about it. He cites the accident and the experience as being one of the reasons he changed from a prosecution to a defense lawyer. (To get the rest of the article, you need to buy it - but not really worth it imo- confirmation is in the below preview)...

Sweetwater lawyer likes high-profile cases, media attention
Author: Jason Sheehan / Reporter-News Staff Writer
Date: December 19, 2004
Publication: Abilene Reporter-News (TX)
John Young was the rising star in the Lubbock County district attorney's office in 1989.

Although he was just starting out as a new prosecutor, Young was assigned high-profile cases and had a knack for handling the media.
But just as quickly as he climbed the ladder, Young fell when he was involved in a car accident that killed Darlene Hall.
''There was a time in my life when I was not real secure with who I was,'...

What would be the point of filing a complaint against her lawyer? This incident is more serious than substance abuse.

Won't Young's license to practice law be suspected immediately after his arrest?

Won't the Court appoint a lawyer for BD now?

I'm not a local and don't know how locals feel about Mr. Young, but ironically he was just appointed (June 11th) Chairman of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Education Institute.

P.s. I think the guy seems smarmy and I don't care for his choice of client. I also am disturbed with his past conviction in the DUI accident. However, 22 years later he's supposedly rehabbed and built up a successful career and just throws it all away when he's off the wagon (right after securing a very high profile client and getting appointed Chairman of the TCDL Ed Inst). Talk about self-destructive bad decisions (and karma?)... He's lucky he didn't kill someone else, brandishing a gun when intoxicated. Scary. This guy is a danger to himself and others.

Stalking maybe? I agree, what tipped LE off to him sitting in his car behind a house?

gahhhhhh....what's in the water over there?

As the officer approached the vehicle, Chief Kelley says Young stepped out and pointed a 9 MM handgun at the officer.

I hope the officer was in full uniform, that would bring it home for me!

Mel

If he had done that here, in my hometown, he would be dead already. WOW.

Outrageous, the man is suppose to be a respected attorney. What's he doing lurking behind a house with a gun while he's under the influence? Then, he pulls a gun on a police officier! :shocked2:

Here's some of the background about Young's previous troubles with alcohol and the law. He needs to get help, imo. He also needs to be held fully accountable for his latest incident; if he's drinking again,it's another accident waiting to happen, imo..

From 2004 article
It didn't take long for Young to become one of Lubbock's top prosecutors. With a zest for the law, Young quickly moved up the ladder.

That all changed, though, when Young was involved in a car accident that claimed the life of Darlene Hall, a mother of two.

The news made headlines throughout Lubbock, and while a grand jury did not indict him on a charge of anything other than DWI, Young was forced to resign in 1990.

''It was a very unpleasant time in my life, but clearly not as unpleasant as those two young children,'' Young said. ''I did act in an irresponsible manner. There's nothing I can do in this life to make up for taking the life of Mrs. Hall. What I can do ... is do better.''

Following the backlash of the accident and the resignation, Young moved to Sweetwater and joined a local law firm. His plan was to learn to practice civil law and move to a bigger city.

''I was still looking over my shoulder for the fallout of a horrible mistake,'' Young said. ''I expected the people of Sweetwater to judge me.''

Instead, Young said, the community embraced him, which is why he and his wife, Tracy, and their two children, Spencer and Lauren, have no plans to leave.

''I think I have a personal responsibility to give back to the community,'' he said. ''It's about investing in the way of life that has been so good for me here in West Texas.''

Since then, he has built quite a reputation for snagging cases thrust into the media spotlight.

He represents Gladys Gerst, the former director for the Sweetwater's People For Progress, Inc., who is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the now-defunct nonprofit corporation.

Justin Hill, a former Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University football player accused of killing an 11-month-old baby in August, and Ernesto Valadez, accused of killing his wife and then burying her body near their home in Hawley in September, also are represented by Young.

Young said there are multiple reasons for his ability to notch the big-time client in big-time situations.

''Some of the passion that I have is born out of once being a criminal defendant,'' Young said. ''I know what it's like to have made an enormous error. I have a great passion for standing up for those who can't stand up for themselves.''

Young also admitted he's got a bit of shameless promotion coursing through his veins. He often goes out of his way to be accommodating to the media and admits he likes to see his face on television or his name in print.

However, he said, having a working relationship with the media is important not only to his law practice, but to the criminal-justice system as well.

''I think the focus of the media keeps us (lawyers) honest,'' he said. ''It's a good check and balance. If that makes me a media hound, then so be it.''
