Does anybody know how much it costs to have a lawyer for a such long case? What I hear and read about lawyer charges I doubt that SM could afford any even if he sold a gun and weed.

Quite a bit more that's for sure. Makes me wonder why an offer to his "brother" & co-conspirator for free legal council or money (envelope for Moose) to pay for a lawyer as it was to AM?
Would be interesting to know if he did seek the "advice" of the lawyer recommended by DM who was privy to the case and who actually paid?

No, it is planning the murder of any person who in this case happens to be TB.

Thanks, I suppose I am reading the tweets too literally

Defendants in courtroom when jury walked in after first break. Most jurors looked towards middle of seats where Bosma family are seated.
.

Edward Greenspan, one of the most influencial criminal defense lawyers in Canda, once told me that you could predict the verdict by watching where the jury's eyes go when they return to the courtroom after their deliberations. Do their sympathies lie with the family, or the accused.

In 1998 my brother hired a criminal defense lawyer for a trial that lasted one week and it cost over $100,000.00.

They just had to get one more of these in before the case is handed over to the jury, eh?

Goodman is now turning to his decision trees -- essentially, they're flow charts to reach a verdict. There are four of them.
by Adam Carter 10:26 AM

I was hoping there would be decision trees. Very helpful for the Jury. Judge in Rafferty trial also provided same. Lets hope same results.

Isn't it possible he is being funded by legal aid ontario?

Why is Millard constantly taking notes and Smich rarely does it seems? What do you all take their body language to mean?

Millard expecting to appeal. (ETA... Or use this trial to help him in the LB trial coming)
Smich expecting to be found not guilty. They are both still in a world disconnected from consequences for what they have done. IMO

If MS had legal aid for his other charges then we know he was lying about why he needed to sell the gun. He would know that he could go see a lawyer with no money.

If Goodman is almost done when it gets to 4:30 will he just continue and finish today even if it's late so he can send the jury to deliberate tonight?

Don't think so - pretty sure his family is funding it - could have financed it with the home in oakville

Not necessarily. He wouldn't have qualified until he was charged with a crime.

Goodman is jumping back in on his second decision tree, for aiding and abetting.
by Adam Carter 1:42 PM

The Crown has to prove the accused helped the principal in a murder and knew the other planned to kill Bosma for a murder verdict, Goodman says.
by Adam Carter 1:44 PM

Goodman again pointing to how state of mind is key here -- knowledge that the principal intended to kill someone. He needs to know that intention, but doesn't need to share it, Goodman says.

Legal aid would not come near the expense of this case, they pay very minimum, that is why many lawyers do not accept legal aid case

  • #158
Goodman says it's more difficult here, because the jury needs to discern the intentions of the aider or abettor, as well what he knew about the principal's intentions.
by Adam Carter 1:49 PM

Goodman tells the jury to consider Smich testified he had no intention to kill anyone, and that Millard blamed Smich.
by Adam Carter 1:53 PM

"What did he see, and what did he hear? Did he know what was happening ... or was he kept in the dark?" Goodman says.

I don't think that's true either particularly not after reading about richard wills, but I'd be willing to concede it is if you have a source.

Goodman continues his charge. Back to the second Decision Tree (for aiding/abetting). #Bosma

2nd Q: did the aider/abettor know the principal intended to kill (or cause bodily harm likely to kill)?

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes · 6m6 minutes ago
Did they intend to help/encourage to do so?

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes · 4m4 minutes ago
Knowledge and intention are both key factors here.
