Branson Missouri hit by Large Tornado 2/29/12

I'm 18 miles NE of Hutchinson, we had strong winds and rain. 10 miles East of me in Canton had golf ball sized hail. Moundridge (about 10-15 miles South of Canton) has cancelled school today bc of no power from down power lines from storms.

I was VERY thankful we narrowly missed the bad part of storm bc I was working and it's very nerve wracking to have to stay in the ICU with our patients bc they are ususally too critical to move to basement. Ever since the Joplin tornado and hearing what their hospital staff endured that night scares me!

I've lived in KS all my life, I'm used to these storms, but not this early in the year!

As far as I know, everything is normal in Topeka, Abilene and other cities where other WS members have family.

Adding my prayers to everyone in the south affected by the tornadoes, may the Lord guide you through the clean up, and may the souls of the departed rest in peace, in Jesus' Holy Name, amen.

Not many people know someone from Fillmore, that is really interesting.

Dear, dear friends of mine live there with their kids, on a farm; I call the farm my 'rescue' place, because it's where I go every few years to recover from city living, and the insanity that surrounds my life. I love how noisy the silence is there, and sitting on the porch watching dry heat lightening far into the evening with them, discussing everything under the sun or just being quiet - well, it's wonderful.

If I don't move to Oregon, I will move there...tornados scare me, though, and that far out, well, it's difficult to be prepared.

I love it there, though. Just love it.

This storm system came barreling through here about 1:00 am or so. It was moving so quickly that it had gone on through before the tornado warning could even be issued. Fortunately our local meteorologists are on the ball and kept telling people to assume there was "tornadic activity." When my cat marched herself into our "safety closet" and began to wail, I knew this was a serious deal. (No matter what radar is showing or the weathermen are saying....ALWAYS always "listen" to your pets! If they take cover, time for the humans to take cover too!)

The wind and hail were monstrous for a bit. I haven't heard any reports of major damage locally, but I know there had to have been some. Our local stations are focusing on the Branson area (as they should).

That's some serious storms they got. Joplin got hit bad by tornadoes last year. I think this severe weather season is going to be just as bad as last year. Night time thunderstorms and tornadoes are more dangerous as people are asleep and not aware of any alerts.

Many killed & hurt in southern IL . . . near my hometown.

10 killed in southern Illinois

Gov. Pat Quinn directed the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to activate the State Emergency Operations Center in Springfield Wednesday after severe storms and tornadoes that struck Harrisburg and other areas in Southern Illinois.

I use to go to an auction a couple of miles out of Fillmore. They just had a large garage and it was a consignment auction and would sell chickens, rabbits and goats at first if they had them then the rest of the stuff. They even had a real working outhouse. LOL

I loved going there and the people were great. A pretty magical area.

One time I was playing poker on the computer and met a lady from Fillmore in a card room. She said she often stopped at a cafe here in my town. My Fillmore connections are growing.

I know people in Fillmore, Ramsey. I don't think the storm was that far north.

Ridgway, IL was hit -- very small town by Wabash River

Dr Fessel, thanks for starting this thread.
Harveyville, KS is my hometown, from the reports I've read something like 40% of the town is gone. It's heartbreaking.

I started watching the storms about the time it got hit. After the storms would pass the temps would drop about 10 degrees. At midnight here it was 51 degrees, at 3:30 or so it was 62 degrees and high humidity. Then they went by and and the temps fell back down.

Magical is right...I did a lot of exploring one year; kept getting lost (and that's not hard to do), and kept getting lost-er...but totally enjoyed it. Scared my friends, because they were expecting me back sooner, but finally found a place open that would let me call them (my cell service didn't work there at the time), and they had to come get me and lead me back.

I loved that few hours, in the dusk, just driving around, totally and utterly lost; still, somehow, also found.

Yes, it's a magical, gorgeous area.

Storm in Menefee, Kentucky, alerting that a tornado is possible/likely; take cover now.

Good grief, this is the same system that hit last night; still going strong.
