So the other fatalities were in buildings on the ground that the plane hit? It's already much worse than first reports sounded.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Gray News) – At least seven people were killed after a UPS plane crashed and caught fire at an airport in Louisville, Kentucky.

Shortly after the crash, witnesses reported finding debris, presumably from the plane, which was departing Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport for Honolulu.

“It fell out of the sky when I was working on the car and that’s when we found out about the crash,” Justin Dunn described. “And then my son was like, ‘Hey, look in the sky,’ and it was coming down out of the sky when he picked it up.

Each piece of news about a plane crash is so saddening. What a sorrowful day for UPS, for Louisville, for all of us. I hope that it was fast for the crew and the victims, and the injured, whose condition, as the governor said, is severe, will make it. Best wishes to the firefighters, to the inhabitants of the city and to the investigators. My heart goes out to the families of the victims. I hope they'll be able to find the black box although the inferno looked horrifying.

They just said people are reporting pieces of burned mail are raining down and also raining oil. 😢

Gov. Andy Beshear did not confirm if the 3 known fatalities were the crew; but it was probably impossible for them to escape ?

I saved a screengrab from the live of the debris field and the areas affected :

The male anchor just said that one of the buildings the plane crashed into was a petroleum facility that manufactured jet fuel ? :(
Imo.
If I'm reading this and Google maps correctly, it looks as though Stooges bar and grill may have been affected. How busy might it have been on a Tuesday late afternoon/early evening?

And Grade A Auto Parts
Yes, I noticed from the map that there are many businesses to the south of that runway but I was thinking of the bar as a social space where people might have been gathering for a beer after a day's work or in anticipation of watching a sporting event on the TV.

They posted early on on their FB account that everyone got out.

Flightradar24 said the plane, which began operations with UPS in 2006, had flown from Louisville to Baltimore earlier on Tuesday before returning to Louisville.

UPS is the largest employer in Louisville, providing 26,000 jobs, the publication Louisville Business First said.

U.S. air safety expert and pilot John Cox said investigators will need to look at why the plane with three engines failed to fly after one apparently caught fire.

“It’s too big a fire for a normal, typical-engine fire,” Cox said. “It’s much too big.”
“That airplane should have flown on two engines. So now we’ve got to look at what caused it not to fly,” he added.

Everyone from Stooges is safe.

Grade A Auto Parts is one of the affected businesses that the governor mentioned.

Death toll rises to 9, 16 missing

As of Wednesday morning, at least nine people are dead and 11 injured, and at least 16 people are still missing. There are two people in critical condition and eight with non-life-threatening injuries at UofL hospitals.

Gov. Andy Beshear said he expects those numbers to grow.

There are still at least two workers missing from Grade A Auto Parts and Kentucky Petroleum Recycling, which he said took a direct hit. It is also unclear how many customers may have been inside the business at the time of the crash.

The search for more victims resumed at daybreak on Wednesday. So far, 16 families reported missing family members, according to Gov. Beshear.

Per CNN on tv, large airplane. No longer used commercially. No apparent parts of airplane visible in wreckage. Plane was headed to Hawaii.
CNN's statement may need a slight modification. The plane is older and is no longer used for commercial passenger service. It is used commercially, however, for cargo.

How busy might it have been on a Tuesday late afternoon/early evening?

Thankfully, most bar and grills experience are slower at that time ( lunch customers have left, evening / dinner customers have not arrived yet).

And now, sadly a "but" at a bad time....

@Love Never Fails has pointed out that UPS is based in Louisville. It is likely a large shipping hub. This brings in the distinct possibility of a lot of people working shift work. And, UPS evidently has unusual shifts. Going back to the number of bar patrons....

Large numbers of people on shift work in a "factory town" can turn the normal customer flow on its head because people have varied days off besides the weekends and shift work means that people have different times for fun.

For example: We start at 0530, so for us, late afternoon is really evening for me and time for a dinner at a bar and grill. Tuesday is actually my Saturday. Or- I work the grave yard shift and sleep late. Late afternoon is early lunch time for me.
