wow...2.6 mile tornado! With all the people fleeing in cars and stuck on the roads it's amazing the death toll wasn't in the hundreds.

Cloudy, rain and/or storms off and on again in Missouri. My breaking news...don't have to water the garden.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a risk of severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening across portions of the central and southern Plains, from southeastern Colorado through northwest Texas, much of Oklahoma and Kansas, and into extreme western Missouri, southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa. The primary threats will be isolated large hail and damaging winds.

For someone that is scared of storms and followed the weather during possible bad events for years, I can honestly say today is the first time I have heard of a Derecho. Dont know how I missed that one.

Massive thunderstorms began moving into the Midwest on Wednesday. Meteorologists warn that the line of storms could launch a weather event called a derecho, which is a straight-line wind storm spanning at least 240 miles. Here's a snapshot of what is happening, state by state:

National Weather Service authorities are reporting several small tornadoes and quarter-sized hail as severe weather moves across northern Illinois. Severe storms were hitting the Rockford area and moving east. Winnebago County emergency officials reported several small tornadoes briefly touched down. The first time that I heard the term derecho, it was with sand/dust storms out west. Derecho is straight line winds associated with a fast moving band of severe thunderstorms.

Southwestern Ohio here. It just passed over. We have had wind all night. This AM a steady downpour, a little lightning and thunder. Not too bad thank goodness.

I don't think many in Ohio got much sleep last night! Chris Bradley (10tv) said at 11:30 pm - 'Get some sleep and set your alarm for 1:00am before the next wave hits' (paraphrased). That's what I did. Kept the kids downstairs. 5 trips to the basement (tornado siren). We had a touchdown about two miles south of us!

Prayers for those East!

I'm in the river valley and it really didn't get bad here. The only storm we got was about 10 am.
