WASHINGTON (AP) — A massive storm system that started in the Upper Midwest brought soaking rains and heavy winds to the Mid-Atlantic Thursday, causing widespread power outages, flash flooding and extensive flight delays, but largely failing to live up to its fierce billing.

Northwest Indiana here...Storm came through here about 6:30 PM last night. We lost power just before the winds hit. Spent 45 min. in the basement and heard hail hit.(was only quarter-size) Our town lost several telephone poles and many trees down...no damage for us. Neighboring town had several roofs blown off. Finally got power back tonight. What a boring night and day without my computer, phones, have a well...so no toilet flushing. But it could have been worse...a few years ago in an ice storm, we were without electric for 6 days. Hope everyone stays safe out there.

NORTHWOOD, Iowa --- Three Waverly residents survived a plunge into a water-filled ditch on Wednesday, thanks to the work of Northwood and Mason City fire departments and their water rescue personnel.

The residents have not been identified.

Northwood Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Hanson said his department was called at 8:16 p.m. to the scene just south of the Diamond Jo Worth Casino on Interstate 35.

They found an SUV submerged in flood waters in the southbound ditch. The water, he said, was rising quickly.

Firefighters later learned the vehicle had hydroplaned off the highway as a result of run-off that had boiled around culverts near the highway.

The culverts could not take the intense influx of rain from storms chugging across the area Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The vehicle rolled into the ditch and at one point, was upside down, Hanson said.

“It washed about 40, 50 yards down the ditch line before it caught on something and flipped upright again,” he said. “They were really, really lucky.”

“The water was eight feet deep and raging,” said Mitch Hanson.

The water was rushing so quickly that it took the Northwood firefighters three tries before firefighter Jim Hanson could reach the vehicle, a distance of about 25 feet.

Firefighters worked in a buddy fashion to get as far into the current as they could before they were no longer touching bottom. They created a human “tripod” and literally propelled Jim Hanson across the remaining distance. Mitch Hanson said it was cold and tiring due to the swift nature of the water.

Jim Hanson attached two safety lines that were then used as lifelines to hold onto during the rescue.

The men first rescued the 3-year-old girl. Jim Hanson was joined by fellow firefighter Bryan Koster and brought the girl out and handed her to waiting firefighters across the watery expanse.

Mason City firefighters arrived on the scene and brought with them an air raft that was used to bring the other two women from the car. All the crews had to work by the light of generators, since it was after sundown when the last two occupants were brought out.

Mason City firefighters Cal Wyman and Scot Orton also provided help in rescuing the women, one of who was nine months pregnant, Nelson said. Despite the harrowing nature of the experience, none of the occupants were injured and did not need medical attention.

Crews continue to search for as many as 11 people missing after floodwater swept through Johnson County.

Johnson County Emergency management officials say the area experienced widespread flooding again overnight. Search and rescue operations along with welfare checks will continue Tuesday.

Wow, I was in Berea, KY yesterday about 12:30 pm to pick up my 9 yr. old grandaughter from her 2 week vaca in SC with her relatives. We met 1/2 way. We did hit some bad weather ( actually drove into and out of it) I think around Lexington?. Hope they find the missing. That storm that hit must have been the 1 we drove through, but it must have intensified:moo:
It was so hot down there, 91, after rain, in KY 68.

Worse today than it was yesterday. It's horrible. Two confirmed dead.
