Breastfeeding at 8 - OMG!!!

  • #21
i breast fed for 18 months. i wanted to stop at a year but my son was ill alot. the doctor suggested i continue until he was no longer sick or we could pin point what caused his problem. i began to feel uncomfortable as he aged. by 14 months it no longer felt right. he would try to lift my shirt if he was thirsty and wanted a "sip". i spent the last 4 months of breast feeding by pumping only. he got what he needed to be healthy and i did not have a toddler trying to climb in my bra. i really can not understand this mother.

Ok, I'm a grandma, and I had a chuckle of the visual of your little boy lifting you shirt to get a sip! :)

My mom told me a story of a mother whose kid would ask for "some booby". hork  If they can ask, they are too old.

Gosh, with the price of milk today it's tempting.

I nursed all 4 of my babies and weaned them all by 15 months.
I am all about breastfeeding and I cringe when I see mothers who pick formula over breastfeeding (I am a snob about this subject, sorry) but this case is extreme!
My friend nursed her 5 year old and it made me uncomfortable. I think it crosses the line into sexual abuse even if the mother is not fully aware of it.
I know that sounds sick because I seriously doubt this mother is thinking about sex but somewhere deep down, it is there.

Ugh, I just don't know.

Growing up as a teenager, I remember one of our neighbors breast-feeding until her son was 6-7. He would come in from playing outside for "a drink" and just walk over to her, take it out, and have some. It was the craziest thing I'd ever seen!

He's a plumber now in Indianapolis. :)

My mom new a lady that breastfed till her kid was 5 or 6. That's gross to me, but i guess that somepeople believe it is the best thing for their kids. Still, if a kid can ask, something is wrong. (my opinion). I actually support this in 3rd world countries where there isn't enough food and people are starving. In those cases, I am glad to see mom's keeping their children alive.

What makes it laudable behavior there and gross behavior here?

I suspect it's a comfort for the child much like thumbsucking. My younger sister still snuck her thumb from time to time at that age.

This didn't gross me out and I don't think it's a sexual thing for one second.

I can see the necessity in communities where food is scarce, etc.

I just think this is weird. I mean the mom had to warn the girl to not be monkeying around and no funny business. If it was really for nourishment and comfort I wouldn't think kids would be playing around while being fed. it's just so out of the norm for me.
I am not sure how I feel about it.

There ya go. In your case I can understand, but anytime past a year, or when they can manage a sippy cup is time to stop, even if you pump and put it in a cup.

It isnt. As a matter of fact nursing makes the nipples LESS sensitive to stimuli.

True. In the beginning, my nipples would bleed. By the end, they were like sandpaper!

My sons want nourishment (like backrubs and snuggles) and monkeying around at the same time constantly!

I agree it's an unusual choice, but I don't see anything inherently wrong or harmful about it. If your theory is "the child should decide" then you should stick with it unless the child's decision makes you uncomfortable.

If this is to benefit the girls then why would the mother feel the need to do an interview and have it loaded to youtube? She must know this isn't the norm and may cause her girls some embarassment, why not keep something so initmate, well, intimate?

I nursed full on until my kids were one and then once in while until they were two. I'm sure I could have pressed them to nurse longer but I really took my cue from them. My son starting to bite to see my face was a great indication that 'we' were done.

OK, for those that don't have or see a problem with it....

If I were to walk into my 7 yr olds room and tell her she could nurse, or suck on my boob, even though she hasn't done it since she was an infant....wouldn't that be abuse?
