Breastfeeding at 8 - OMG!!!

  • #221
I heard this also, when I was a member of La Leche League. Also that the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for 2 years.
thanks- but is there really a recorded statistic to verify this " average " age?
I can understand the recommendation of 2 years, but I am still trying to understand a statistic that would allow an overall WORLD average of 4 + years of bf.

Here is an article written by the mother explaining the documentary

http://www.themothermagazine.co.uk/extraordinarybreastfeeding.html

Yeah, thank you for that article. Here is a quote from the bottom of the article explaining why they produced the piece entitled 'Extraordinary Breastfeeding'. To draw media attention to the fact that women do not have the right to breastfeed in public. Women are criminalized for doing the most natural thing in the world, feeding their infants. Most women wish to be discreet when breastfeeding, but why should a woman have to take a baby into a filthy public toilet to nurse? To me, especially after my friend was arrested for nursing her infant in order to quiet him down, there is a very twisted double standard where mothers breasts are viewed as filthy, yet women freely dance topless for money in men's clubs. JMO.
**A very special and heartfelt thank you to Katie Buchanan, Producer of Extraordinary Breastfeeding and a mother who breastfed, for staying true to your goal of a campaigning documentary for the right to breastfeed in public while skilfully grabbing the attention of mainstream Britain.

this is not what our debate is about- no one here thinks a woman should not be able to bf in public- the reactions are about the age of the children she bf

I totally agree with the info posted by seekingjana, it is all info that i have heard and seen before... I agree with you, probably a hoax... most likely why we feel so icky!!

Like I said the fact that the mom's breasts and her milk are a really important part of their life is the part that bothers me. That part did not change in the article. here is a quote from yeah,me's link:

Bethany drew huge media attention by the fact she requested to breastfeed for a 9th birthday present

that's wrong!

ack!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is an extremely unhealthy fixation for those two girls. I mean do they do it in public? If this story originated here (and I know it happens here, we just do not hear about it that much) what do you guys think the outcome would be? Seriously, just watching that really made me feel like I was watching something I really shouldn't have been watching ..I keep looking back over my shoulder hoping noone "catches" me watching it. I breastfed both of my children for about 6 months each, those teeth came in and it is bottle time baby.

Just seeing this thread...IMO, this is satisfying the mother in some way to continue to do this. It's not like this family lives in a third world country and nourishment is not available in another form to these kids. This women is doing her children a big disservice. Just my opinion.

I agree, this is not healthy for the children. I asked Mr. B about it (he's a family practice doc) and he just about fell over. He certainly didn't think it was being done "for the health of the girls"....:bang: He thought it was sort of gross.

sorry to bump this back up....but

can someone please copy here what the chant they use at the table is?
I can't watch YouTube here at work and my daughter has taken over the home PC....but someone asked me in a PM if the chant was Wiccan and I'd like to hear so I can tell.

Although Wiccan's practice the natural way of living, this would still be disturbing to me because of the possible pyschological effects on the children later. Mother's milk is best but instead of allowing them to actually suckle at her breast, she should express the breast milk and have them drink from a cup if she really thinks it is more beneficial than cow's milk...which, btw, I do think her milk is better for the children than antibiotic laced and hormonally altered cow's milk...but she should not be letting them suckle at that age! Or... geesh, for that matter, just drink organic!

TIA

Ok What the hell was that? Can't this woman just pump it into a cup and let them drink it like milk from the carton? EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!If it is about nourishment there should be no reason to have them drinking from the breast when it can easily be placed in another container etc. All I can say is sorry but this is wrong wrong wrong!!!

Basically there prayer was thanking the earth and the sun for their food, life and light, etc. I would go back and transcribe, but I don't want to watch the first part to get to the last. :blushing:

the mom said it was... plus, didn't that kid look comfy all sprawled out there how many times a day (not to me, but i think that was the "point")? i mean, i run my kid around like a slave driver (she is 7) and here this kid was taking a freakin nap break with a booby multiple times a day!!! what do you want to bet that when she gets in trouble, whatever... she is like "wah, i want to nurse mommy, I'm upset!!" and mom gladly obliges!!...

i would love to see the whole program!

Exactly! Organic is the only milk we drink. My dd loves it.

The breastfeeding seems to be a driving force in their lives and that is the most unnatural thing about it. I mean the girls requesting the mother letting her breasts go free by going braless and disliking the bra in general really got my attention.
There you go. Maybe that explains it. I was so uncomfortable watching that video and I couldn't even explain to myself why. I agree that BF is normal, natural and pleasurable for both mother and child but at that age is just weird. The bra thing got my attention as well. Hello. Are you going to let you child tell you what to wear? And go along with it? She gives the children a little too much power as far as that goes.

"The loss of the babyhood sucking reflex is another example that we lose the reflexes we are born with which we lose the NEED for. It doesn't matter if someone offered me 1 million dollars to suck milk out of a woman's breast. I could not do it even if I really wanted the million bucks because I lost the natural sucking reflex needed for milk expression more years ago than I care to admit. We ALL did, including these two girls."

I'm not disagreeing with you here, but I have to say something that may be a little TMI. when I was breastfeeding my son, I had to be away from him for a couple of days to be with my husband who was out of town. Of course my breasts were huge and painful and he "helped" me out. He obviously was able to suck. How is that different that what you are trying to say?
