1) because the hallbach family believes the evidence the cops told them about does not make them stupid. some people still do trust the police DA and judges.....sadly some people trust the wrong ones. i dont know if avery is guilty, and personaly, i think the guy is a psychopath regardless (burning a cat alive pretty much seals that for me) but brandan is just a scapegoat. an easy one.
2) about the rape case above, cops and prosecutors dont ever want to admit a mistake even when confronted with it. thats why melissa calusisnski is still sitting behind bars for something that never even happened.
I agree with every word.
SA was a thorn in LE's side for most of his life...in trouble for this or that, causing problems on many levels, and LE were powerless to do much about it because he never got in deep enough for them to really get him. So when the rape happened, they went out of their way to prove it was him. They wanted him behind bars and this was their chance. A witness was willing to identify him so they took the opportunity and ran with it even after questions arose about whether it could have been someone else--someone who SA resembled only slightly but enough that their star witness could be led to believe SA was the perp. With an eye witness to the crime and a defendant who came from the wrong side of the tracks, LE was in like Flynn in their effort to rid themselves of this guy who they considered a menace.
Real evidence ignored and other evidence (circumstantial) manufactured in that rape case is the reason I question the murder investigation. I have always believed Dassey could be innocent and that he had been coerced into his confession; I am not as convinced of SA's innocence and if anything comes of his attorney's efforts I hope it is not a technicality but rather something that leads to the truth of the matter. I am convinced that we have not yet heard the truth of the matter.
Respect of LE and the justice system is not automatic for me. Respect has to be earned; some jurisdictions do very well and others leave much to be desired. I have no respect for some authorities in the SA murder investigation and trial and given what has been proven to have occurred in that jurisdiction decades ago, it is only reasonable that people question things now.
So, SA was considered a menace. I have seen evidence that points toward this consideration not being out of line. SA at times acted out in ways that were scary. Still, that is not a reason to railroad someone. I don't know yet if the investigators and prosecutors railroaded SA with this crime but they did so with a previous crime and that is reason enough to consider they might have done so again.
LE and other persons in authority do not like being wrong but truth is, sometimes they are. If they could accept and admit and apologize, and do everything in their power to right those wrongs, we might have fewer innocent people imprisoned and fewer guilty people walking free. The desire for LE to save face is understandable but when it means continuing to condemn someone who they know might be innocent, it is beyond disturbing.
