His ad in LinkedIn presenting himself as an "anti fraud" specialist
might have caught attention of some shady ppl.
What an asset for criminals!
I bet they have methods to convince ppl joining them.
But there is no "way out" I guess.
And "dead men don't talk"

JMO

But, of course, my theory might be completely off the mark.
Oh well...
I need to stop reading these thrillers!
I think definitely he got on the wrong side of some very dangerous people as he was in a great sense of panic for a couple of days, I think that open garage door was a message to say “we know where you are’’

I still think Russian mafia/oligarchs as one of their main MO’s is forcing enemies to hang themselves at gunpoint

I don’t believe it was murder/suicide or a burglary, if it was a burglary the jewellery would have been taken

Yep.
This "open garage door" was a huge red flag to me from the start.
And his "off the scale" reaction to it :(

Am finding it hard to visualise him hanging himself from a radiator. I presume it's a radiator attached to the wall. Would it have supported his weight?

I seem to remember in earlier reports it was a "banister", not "radiator".

ETA
Found it!

"French media have reported Mr Searle was found inside
hanging from a banister with a gag in his mouth,
but local officials have refused to confirm this."

Ah ok, that I can visualise

Noting FWIW..
''Their rural home in the quiet hamlet of Les Pesquiès is only 15 miles away from Vabre-Tizac, where Patricia Wilson, 58, was “very violently” murdered in 2012.''
2016
''A French gardener has been jailed for 30 years for the premeditated murder of his British lover at her home in southern France in 2012.''

  • #326
That may be true, but we can roll our eyes at the imperfect and false reporting by the press. The French authorities are giving nothing away which seems to be causing the media to twist any given facts into scenarios which they want to publish.
Some of the information might also be coming from the neighbor who discovered the bodies.

The full statement from the French public prosecutor - translated by

As a reminder, in accordance with article 11 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the public prosecutor may make public objective information taken from the proceedings in order to avoid the dissemination of fragmentary or inaccurate information.

On 6 February 2025 at 12:27, the Aveyron fire and rescue operations centre was notified by a neighbour of the discovery of the body of a woman, partially undressed, outside her home in the commune of Villefranche de Rouergue.

The responding fire brigade discovered a second body at the back of the house and notified the gendarmes of the Villefranche de Rouergue brigade.

The investigation, initially led by the Villefranche de Rouergue research brigade, was handed over to the Toulouse research section.

The Gendarmerie Nationale deployed extensive resources to determine the circumstances of the tragedy:

- intervention of criminal investigation technicians with the support of the Gendarmerie Nationale's criminal research institute

- travel by a forensic pathologist,

- search of the home,

- use of a drone and helicopter overflight of the scene,

- interviewing of relatives,

- neighbourhood investigation.

The two deceased, a man and a woman, were the owners of the home in which their bodies were found.

They were retired British nationals who had lived in Aveyron for 5 years.

The first victim, Mrs KERR, had a large head wound.

A box containing jewellery was found nearby, but no object or weapon was found that could have caused the injuries.

Mr SEARLE, who was found hanging by a rope attached to a radiator, showed no visible defensive injuries.

The house appeared to have been rudimentarily searched; cash was found in the couple's bedroom.

The autopsies were performed on 10 February 2025 at the Montpellier forensic medical institute.

Mrs KERR had received several blows to the skull with a blunt, sharp object.

No traces of sexual assault were found.

Mr SEARLE's death was caused by hanging.

Additional examinations (anatomo-pathological, toxicological) are underway to determine the precise circumstances of the deaths.

Investigations are continuing, in particular to determine whether the tragedy was the result of a domestic crime followed by suicide, or whether it was the work of a third party.

RS&BBM - So, we're back to the radiator. As @bmacmillan1 mentioned above, I have a really difficult time picturing this.

I think this is more likely to be domestic than an outsider seeking money.

An outsider seeking money wouldn't have left the money and jewellery behind. They would have taken it.

MOO
The motive appears to have been staged in any case, unless the perpetrator(s) got interrupted and didn't finish the robbery.

I wonder in which scenario would the wife run away from the killer(s) and take her valuables with her? Reportedly she was found semi-nude, wearing a light nightie. That could mean that she was attacked at night, either in bed, when she got up or was woken up. But if she was surprised in her sleep, it's not likely that she would have made it out of the house. Perhaps a verbal altercation (with threats) took place first.

I think with his knowledge of money laundering even though he prevented it in his past job he would be an expert on it so in desperation to make some money laundered some money off very dangerous people and it went wrong, he lost their money or took some of it himself, might explain the agitated state he was in on the phone those last couple of days and fact he was seen crying by a local
Was he seen crying or angry? I don't remember.

My elementary school had radiators that were mounted to the floor. Are the radiators in France mounted high up on the wall or ceiling?

I once lived in a flat with radiator high on the wall - close to the ceiling - but only in the bathroom.
I don't think it was sturdy enough to hold heavy weight though.
It was half the size of radiators in other rooms which were on the floor level.

I’m the same, but people have been known to hang themselves via door handles.

So it doesn’t seem impossible.

Don't some people hang themselves in a seated position? You don't necessarily have to be literally hanging.

Edit - posted at the same time as bringmeacupoft!

i agree, i think both would be possible!

i wonder if this is a translation issue? or maybe just misinformation

Yes, but if he was trying to make it look like a double murder (as some here have speculated), why would he hang himself in a seated position?

Could it perhaps be one like this?

My other thought was whether a radiator was on a hallway near stairs/a bannister etc, iykwim.

yes the garage door waves a flag and at which point did "they" enter the building strewing all the jewelry around as was reported? cancels the robery theory for sure. as a neighbor was walking buy and heard him screaming in the phone sets one to wonder "who?" the finacial problems he was having was with his pension??? sure...the police will have their work cut out on this one...
