GUILTY Brock Turner, college swimmer, CONVICTED of rape - sentenced to only 6 months in jail

This should stir the pot a little (as if it needs stirring).

During the Brock Turner trial, the first witness for the defense was Kim Fromme, Professor of Clinical Psychology at University of Texas, Austin. She has conducted research on alcohol induced blackouts and is perceived as an expert on the topic. She has developed some odd theory that she peddles.

The prosecuting attorney Alaleh Kianerci, Deputy District Attorney challenged Fromme's integrity as a nuetral expert. She called into question Fromme's financial compensation for testifying: $8,000 retainer + several thousand more for airfare, a hotel stay, and $350/hr fee (seems low to me). It was pointed out that of 30 cases she was expert witness in, the vast majority were for the defense.

Anyhow, among those 30 cases, she testified in the Steubenville case, ... for the defense.

Is there any mechanism (other than another screw up by the sex offender) whereby the sentence could be increased at this point? Or are we stuck with it?

I heard the guy is appealing his sentence. There are some cases in other states where judges have given more severe sentences when they appealed.

I wonder if the victim was tested for a date rape type of drug. Mom is so upset that her son Brock ( aka the Beav ) might be thought of as a child rapist because according to her the registry isn't clear on age of victim,(and I think she is wrong on that) but IMO she may as well have been a child due to her state at the time.
I'm really afraid this guy will offend again. IMO

Wouldn't it make more sense to demonstrate next to a court building?

I agree. It's good that they are doing something, but from what I can tell Stanford handled this exactly right.

IMO, the demonstration is largely symbolic and will reach a much larger audience by demonstrating at graduation ceremonies.

The courthouse is down the street a ways from the Stanford Stadium. The message will not be lost by not demonstrating there. Pretty much everything in Palo Alto revolves around the university.

In this specific case, it is not really about how Stanford handled it.

They must have tested her for drugs and found no evidence, but I read her statement to police today and it seems strange that she blacked out the way she did - she had drunk all the spirits she'd had that night by the time her sister last spoke to her, and she was fine - she tried some beer that she thinks she opened herself and didn't like the taste, and she remembers nothing after that. Her boyfriend spoke to her on the phone and was extremely alarmed; her sister came back to the party after walking a friend home, and couldn't find her. All this within a very short time frame. Also she told police that when she had blacked out in the past, it was after steady consistent drinking over a much longer period... presumably with people she knew/ trusted better.
Brock timed it very neatly - her sister was gone for only a short period, she'd disintegrated from "buzzing" drunk to almost unconscious within the same short period of time, and he somehow convinced her to go outside with him. It sounds like the hospital did a very thorough job of looking after her so I'm sure they would have tested her for a date rape drug, especially in the circumstances. But if there was a date rape drug, it must have been untraceable.

I also think he will offend again - plus I think after all the self-imposed discipline of swimming, he will quickly disintegrate into someone his parents won't recognize. Elite athletes generally have a hard time adjusting, especially if they are "benched" before they hit their peak, mainly because they don't have enough practical resources to fill all those extra hours in the day that used to go into training. He's angry, resentful, everything is someone else's fault... let's hope that if he does self-destruct, he doesn't destroy anyone else in the process.

I would think the Stanford rapist is the happiest person on earth since the Orlando shooting happened. Now his story will be on page 2.
MOO

I hate to admit it, but I thought about this too.

In the doc dump, I saw where a juror asked about testing the victim's blood for other substances, but if there was anything about the answer to it, I didn't see it.

We all know this Rich Boy did NOT write this letter! His lawyer has had someone write it so it would be "perfect" in appealing to what the judge wants to hear.

Another Ethan Couch case where a slap on the wrist for the public's eye.

Ummm, actually he might have- he tried to blame the swim team for his problems... Just saying

An interesting essay, worth a read...

I Founded Stanford’s Sexual Assault Prevention Office.
Here’s Why Brock Turner’s Case Is Unusual.

“As the Founder of Stanford’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Office, I counseled approximately 100 survivors on whether to report their assault to the university and to the police. That same year I also led efforts to educate thousands of students, staff, and faculty on the difference between consent and violence. Our innovative programs got national attention and I was asked to provide testimony to Congress for the Violence Against Women Act on campus assault prevention education.

It’s good to read the recent Stanford University statement that they still train students to be proactive in stopping assaults and that two students did when they saw the violent actions of another student.

Brock Turner’s case is unusual in that most campus survivors are acquaintances with the assailant; there are no eyewitnesses; and most survivors don’t want to report to the police or get involved with the criminal justice system. Few reports of sexual assault ever lead to prosecution.”

Much, much more...

I was just coming here to post this from a different article. This is a very good thing. I used to feel that maybe I shouldn't complain since I was only "molested" by my uncle I didn't have it as bad as rape victims, although uncle-niece relations are defined as incest. According to this new definition- he raped me. I've still been traumatized for years by it, even though it only happened one time, and... no alcohol was involved.

Plus, she was out for over three hours. The police report indicates that they tried rouse her from 1:30 am until 4:30 am, before they were able to wake her.

The actual verdict carried heavy time.

But once again. Some judge decided that a stellar rich youngster shouldn't receive the amount of time for a rape or crack selling as others.

So was there evidence that suggested the victim and sir duecthe had plans for having sex in a park while she was passed out.

If not. He should have been sentenced to the maximum. Jmo.

The guilty verdict was there. But just like the affluenza teen.

The sentence by the judge was not.

So was the judge privy to a mentioned hook up between the two before this debacle?

The judge was a Stanford alum and former athlete- so they had that in common. Plus there were the character reference letters. Yet they were disingenuous about his making the Olympic team according to someone that knew his abilities. His chances of even qualifying were very slim, he wasn't a fast swimmer.

I hate to admit it, but I thought about this too.

Gary Condit, suspected in Chandra Levy's murder at the time felt the same way when Sept. 11th happened.

Don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread already but there is a disgusting support group on facebook I cannot believe it is allowed.
