Brooke's nickname is Brookey. She may dye her hair brown. Her ears are pierced. She smoked Marlboro cigarettes at the time of her disappearance.
Brooke lived with her family in Traveler's Rest, South Carolina in 1999. She hosted a party with several friends on July 3 of that year. Her parents returned from a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina at approximately 2:00 am on July 4. Brooke was sitting on the front porch. She said that she had had an argument with her boyfriend. She planned to walk to a store about 2 blocks away to get cigarettes. She left the house at approximately 2:30 am after another verbal argument with her boyfriend. She left a note for him saying "Follow me if you care". She never returned home and has never been seen again. Brooke's boyfriend has refused to cooperate in the investigation.
In 2004, a woman registered for classes at a university using Brooke's name, date of birth, and social security number. She took courses for two years before she was discovered in 2006. The woman was identified as Esther Elizabeth Reed. When authorities confronted her, she claimed that she was Brooke and that she had left home voluntarily. She fled when investigators planned to take a DNA test. She was arrested in Chicago, Illinois in 2008. Authorities believe she used Brooke's identity as an opportunity and never actually had anything to do with her disappearance. Brooke is still missing.
