Brownsville, Tx: Police kill armed teenage student at Texas school.

I agree with this post and have a question for those who follow constitutional law. Is there any reason why we couldn't have laws that require toy guns to be made in certain bright colors and pellet guns to be made in others? (I suppose we'd have to also require that real guns NOT be made in those colors.)

This doesn't seem to be a 2nd amendment issue. Is it a 1st amendment problem?

Last year for Christmas my grandson wanted an Air Soft Pellet Gun. I spoke to my DIL and she said I could buy one but only if it was pink. No fooling. My 6 ft +220 lb. grandson has a pink pellet gun.

Also, Cali is doing some research on the problem:

THis student was 15 yrs old. I don't think he was bullied, imo, he was probably a bully himself. He was 2 years behind so he was likely truant a lot and probably a big troublemaker. That's just my gut feeling. I think LE did what they had to do. There was no reason for that teenager to have a gun at school other than to do harm to others. imoo

ETA: I worked in a public middle school for a decade. Believe me,the 15 yr old 8th graders were not typically the victims of bullies. It was usually the other way around.

I have read that bullies are at higher risk for suicide. Something you don't hear much about. It could also be possible he was neither bullied or a bully.

Texas school 911 call: "Put the gun down!"

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57353265/texas-school-911-call-put-the-gun-down/?tag=strip

A 911 recording reveals the tense moments in a Texas middle school when police confronted an eighth-grader who was brandishing a realistic-looking pellet gun.

Officers repeatedly yelled "Put the gun down!" When 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez refused, they fatally shot the boy Wednesday at Cummings Middle School in Brownsville.

A six-minute recording of the 911 call that summoned police was obtained Thursday by the Brownsville Herald.

The shot in the back of the head is troubling. Was he surrounded? In other words, one or 2 cops in front and another in the back? Cop shoots at the chest and the other behind him fires at his head?

If he was shot in the chest first, wouldn't he have gone down immediately? Why a second shot to the head?

Just trying to piece together the crime scene and trying to understand how it all went down.

I agree. I'd like to know how that happened.

Seriously? WTH is wrong with people?

Texas police receive death threats after shooting teen

In addition to people making stupid threats against the officers, this part of the article bugs me;

...Authorities declined to share what the boy said before he was shot....

I wonder why? I'm not saying anything was done illegally or immorally by the cops, but the shot in the back of the head and not telling us his final words is a little bothersome.

I doubt there was any thought to shoot to disarm with what was probably hundreds of innocent children who could have been hit by stray bullets. You miss and that kid could have emptied a clip and killed however many kids that matched the number of bullets in his gun. I know it sounds harsh, but it's ALWAYS about the innocent first.

I read that LE is trained to aim for the middle or torso because shooting someone in the leg is not going to stop them from using their firearm.

I am wondering if they are not saying right now out of respect for his family. I think he might have yelled something like " EFF YOU! Or Kill me now Mother effer...something along those lines.

It was confirmed there was no shot to the back of the head. It was a laceration from the fall. 2 shots to the abdomen and torso.

As I understand it, they are trained to shoot for the torso because it's the biggest target and has the best chance of stopping someone in their tracks.

Do you have a link for that?

I read it right before my laptop crashed. I'm using my phone now and I'm not the best at posting links on it. I found it by googling his name in Brownsville. I will try though

You're right. I'm trying to remember what I read before my computer crashed and its not working very well. Pray that my laptop heals itself overnight.

This from the link posted by Chicana:

On the recording, police can be heard yelling: "Put the gun down! Put it on the floor!" In the background, someone else yells, "He's saying that he is willing to die."

http://abcnews.go.com/m/story?id=15299265&sid=81&p=4

His parents, teachers, neighbours all said he was a good kid. I wonder what caused him to do this that fateful morning. Why did he want to die? :(

I don't think painting the tip of a pellet gun orange would make me feel any safer or less justified in shooting if I was LE. The bad guys could paint their tips orange on a real gun so LE wouldn't shoot first. My husband painted one of his hunting guns with a green camo color to protect the wood if it was raining. He could have painted it pink or orange though. He just didn't.

You don't point guns unless you intend to shoot. That's how I was taught.

I had a mentally unstable person pull a glock style pellet gun on me. I felt wings sprouting right out of my back until he clicked it and I was still there. He was suicidal and said he wanted me to know how he felt. That is what my ears are for!

We have to teach our kids to talk about their feelings not act them out.

This boys parents are already pointing the finger at someone else. Bet this didn't just start. It is a shame that at a time when they should really sit down, grieve and look at how this came to be (especially if they have other children), that they are pointing fingers and still thinking their child didn't have to follow the rules.

also I want to know about the head shot . . . now that's excessive & not standard LE tactics.

An assistant principal made the call. As officers arrive, she says Gonzalez is drawing the weapon. A moment later, police yell that Gonzalez is running through the hall. 911 call is scary . . .

Someone can be heard yelling that the student says he's willing to die. And an administrator is yelling, "Lock the door."
