Budget cuts may cancel or suspend Casey trial

  • #121
I thought the whole point of a Caseytown and allowing TruTV and HLN and countless others access to the trial was to offset the cost of the trial?
I for one believe CNN has very very deep pockets. I think if the powers that be can pay Kate the mother of 8 more than 160k per episode and if Snooky from the Shore got paid 10 million last year to stumble around drunk, the producers at HLN can afford to pay the cost of the trial they'll make a fortune off of.

If Florida can't afford to take murderers to trial, then maybe it's time to retire the DP and spare the cost of automatic appeals.
Of course it's interesting this should come while BP considers last weeks motions and the DT's new ones for endless investigative hours. JMO

I'm picturing Casey listening to this announcement as it came across her little transister radio this afternoon.

She runs to her snack stash, reaches in and grabs a Slim Jim and a packet of Hot Peanuts, rushes over to her *door*, and starts yelling and screaming;
"HEEEEEEEEEEEYYY............Let MEEEEEEE Out of herrrrrrrrre, NOOOOOWWWW!!!"

With a fast swiping motion of her Slim Jim, she rakes it across the bars of her cell, and then starts tosses hot peanuts out at the guard to get her attention....

"I SAID, get meeeeeee out of HERE. I WANT MY ATTORNEEEEEEY, and by God, you better be MOVING it....are YOU listening tooooo MEEEE???"

"I want a BRAND NEW 2011 WInnebago RV, with a full tank of gas sitting outside this G/D place in 15 minutes, with a BLANK CHECK from the Bank of America made out to MEEE, and I want it NOWWWW."

"That clerk woman just said that MY case was gonna be cancelled...did you hear that? HEYYYYY.........oh, you are gonna be sooooooooo sorry when I get out of here and start telling the things that YOU did".

"Guard........guard?........G/D it all...........no one EVER LISTEN'S TO MEEEEEE".....

I hate to say this, but watching that video of this Clerk of Court appears to me that she has been "giddy" to be "part of this huge case that spans across the country" (as relayed in her email to Perry) and was just ITCHING to have her own moment in "the spotlight of the media"...

Her comments and statements were....hmm..."questionable" to me...

Her five minutes of fame are about over. I don't know how the question about her budget was posed to her, either at her office or via email, but she should have deferred the question until she could get a better answer from someone else. Her 'moment' caused a State Senator (the one who appropriates her funds) and Judge Perry (with whom she's had issues over the budget so bad back in 2009 that both of them had to get attorney's to settle it) who was in Tallahassee, to have to be called to get clarification made for her. I bet she doesn't do that again anytime soon.

Maybe they can just send her to Guantanamo and call it a day. She'd be a great enemy combatant. They say the food there is pretty good.

And I hear they have 'waterboarding' as a sporting event :floorlaugh:

Plus, she's too much of a flight risk. She may well have gone to California, Puerto Rico, New York, Costa Rica, or Ireland given one more day...

Plus, if she were let out tomorrow, just where in the heck would she go? Back to her parents house? Duh! That didn't work to well, rioters would have her pulled out of that house in a split second and strung up on a pole. The safest place she could be right now is jail. And that's where SHE doesn't want to be. ALL of her family is on the prosecutions witness list, that couldn't make for a good homecoming with any of them.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but IMO, this case stands to help Orange/Orlando/Florida recoup some of that money...there are going to be media people in the hotels and restaurants, paying sales, gasoline, tolls and meal taxes as they go...
If 200 people spend $150 a day for 60 days, and a conservative 5% of that goes toward taxes and such, you got $90,000 right there....to me, that's conservative, considering that out-of-state media tend to stay in the pricier hotels like, um, uh, the Ritz...

I haven't read this whole thread, so apologies in advance if this is repetitive.

Ms. Gardner isn't telling the whole story. She seems to omit the FACT that the Casey Anthony case has also CONTRIBUTED funds to the clerk's office. WSers alone have paid thousands of dollars @ the cost of $1 per page for MM to secure the thousands of pages of documents that WE have been able to review. That is just WS ALONE. I am not sure if media outlets have to pay the same rate, but I know that there are others who have paid for docs.

Richard Hornsby advised MM just last week [ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6208125&postcount=226"]in this post [/ame]of a way to lower his costs by requesting the docs straight from the SA office - they are only allowed to charge for the cost of copying (and I promise you it is A LOT lower that $1 per pg.). Or alternatively, he could take a personal scanner in the "reading room" (where you can review public docs for free) and scan them himself. So, Ms. Gardner needs to say "Thank You", instead of trying to scare the heck out of everyone that justice may be thwarted if she doesn't get her way.

I am not saying it could pay for the cost of the trial by any stretch, but if you're gonna be crazy enough to cry "FIRE!", you better be ready to answer your critics.

All the press reports and blogging sites such as Hal, Schaeffer, etc...all seem to be speculating that this "stunt" (my wording) was an attempt by Gardner to use a murdered baby case to push her agenda concerning possible budget crunches....as opposed to her trying to manipulate anything with this case itself persay...

In the her "rebuttal" video posted above, the reporter even asks her about the allegations of her using a "murdered child" to push her agenda...

Judge Perry did say he was going to be in Tallahassee this week asking for money.

"The state senator who was talking about forcing big cuts on clerks of courts around the state said the cuts will be nowhere near as large as the clerks feared.

A spokeswoman for the circuit court administration confirmed Judge Perry is aware of the clerk’s concerns, but believes “talks of (delaying) the case are extremely premature.”

In fact, a lobbyist for clerks of court this afternoon told Gardner key state senators now say the large cuts Gardner feared will not be required. If that turns out to be true, the Anthony trial will not be impacted by any cuts."

I don't know, that's what San Mateo businesses thought for the Scott Peterson case. Modesto spent over a million prosecuting that case and they were arguing over the bids for the trial. Apparently it cost that city more because of additional LE, parking, etc. I don't remember all the details but it didn't seem to work out as they hoped. Of course in this case the jurors are being brought into Orlando so that would make a big difference imo.

I don't doubt that this trial will, heck has already, cost more than $90 G's, but hey, it's something.
I just happen to be one of those gals that is deeply suspicious when a government arm declares that they are out of money. I live just outside D.C., in the land of Patrick Henry...I hear the gubment whining for dough everyday-and wonder everyday if all monies are accurately accounted for.

Her concern isn't the whole tab anyway about 200,000 of it. The cost for jurors at the hotel, food, transportation. I think her motivation is crystal clear. Blab to the media about budget cuts and use the CA case to get their attention. We see this kind of thing all the time. How often are the numbers inflated to support "said cause" ?

Like I wrote, come on up here to my neck of the woods-You will hear the local media reporting on the most absurd stories of "neediness" in DC. You would think our congress has to show up in rags and beg for food on 14th street everyday...

ETA-Well, there is begging happening on 14th street, but not for food-I'll just leave that little inside joke hanging out there for all ya'll familiar with the "night life" on 14th street....:behind:

I find it almost impossible to believe that there would not be a jury trial IF THE DEFENDANT DID NOT CHOOSE THAT. She has to be given an option.

FROM WIKI:

But those who charged with a criminal offense, breach of contract or federal offence have a Constitutional right to a trial by jury.

I think this is political BS. I can think of a way they can save the state $360K without doing a thing - let ICA be tried in Orlando, among her peers.
I guess we won't bother to try any criminals in Florida while the budget crunch ]on, huh?
---------
ZsaZsa,I agree.I believe if they looked around they would find people in Orlando who are not up on this trial. Many people never read about trials. She did it in Orlando why not the entire trial from there? So if there is an appeal its far down the road as someone here said. She'd lose again anyway.Truth is truth.:seeya:

Judge Perry and Lydia Gardner have had some big issues over budget in the past. I can't find all the articles from the first go around in 2009 but found one near the beginning and one near the resolution of that issue that may explain a little bit.

I really think that Ms. Gardner's statements were politically motivated and really nothing to do with KC's case at all. She just used that as an attention gaining statement... just another person squeezing money from this poor baby's death in one fashion or another. Despicable IMO! At any rate, she doesn't have the power to hold this case for ransom. It is Judge Perry who decides when this case goes to trial, not the clerk's office.
