Budget cuts may cancel or suspend Casey trial

  • #141
I was just thinking? I wonder how George and Cindy interpreted this non-event today? Do you think they were telling themselves... "See!!! They want to cancel Casey's trial. They know she is innocent and there is no evidence that shows that she did anything to Caylee. Law Enforcement, The State Attourney's Office, and Judge Perry are just trying to trick Casey a confession out of Casey by taking this to trial. The Clerk of Courts say the trial should be canceled. If they say it should be canceled... it should be canceled. If there's a white dog... there's a Zanny."

I'm sure they let their fingers do some flying on those bat phones to that clerk first of all, while the other Anthony member had theirs speed dialing their attorney.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but IMO, this case stands to help Orange/Orlando/Florida recoup some of that money...there are going to be media people in the hotels and restaurants, paying sales, gasoline, tolls and meal taxes as they go...
If 200 people spend $150 a day for 60 days, and a conservative 5% of that goes toward taxes and such, you got $90,000 right there....to me, that's conservative, considering that out-of-state media tend to stay in the pricier hotels like, um, uh, the Ritz...

You are so right! Tourism is going to be higher this year in the Orlando this summer! Coming attraction "The Casey Attorney Trial" and bottom line that means money in the local pockets as well as the state's! The state would be foolish to delay this trial and potential loss of revenue! JMO
Thanks for stating this better than I have been able to.

Unfortunately, already money and future money will be made from the death of little Caylee which should never have happened in the first place; but if it helps brings the guilty to trial; let it be the State of Florida and all the state workers who have actually put in tons of time to find justice for this special little angel benefit the most from funds to keep this trial on track!

ORLANDO, Fla. --

Funding for Casey Anthony's murder trial should not be a major concern, a state senator told WESH 2 News on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Orange County Clerk of Courts Lydia Gardner issued a statement claiming that her office's funding was in risk of getting cut by 5 percent.

Gardner said that the Florida Senate proposed the cut to the budget in the fourth fiscal quarter of the year, right when Anthony's murder trial was set to begin.

“Our funding for the Casey Anthony trial is in serious jeopardy at this time," said Gardner.

State Sen. Mike Fasano said Gardner's statements were not accurate. Fasano is the chairman of the Senate's budget subcommittee on criminal and civil justice appropriations. The committee oversees funding for offices such as the Orange County Clerk of Court.

I think this Garndner truly misspoke. His Honor will have none of that nonsense. JMHO

I haven't read this whole thread, so apologies in advance if this is repetitive.

Ms. Gardner isn't telling the whole story. She seems to omit the FACT that the Casey Anthony case has also CONTRIBUTED funds to the clerk's office. WSers alone have paid thousands of dollars @ the cost of $1 per page for MM to secure the thousands of pages of documents that WE have been able to review. That is just WS ALONE. I am not sure if media outlets have to pay the same rate, but I know that there are others who have paid for docs.

Richard Hornsby advised MM just last week in this post of a way to lower his costs by requesting the docs straight from the SA office - they are only allowed to charge for the cost of copying (and I promise you it is A LOT lower that $1 per pg.). Or alternatively, he could take a personal scanner in the "reading room" (where you can review public docs for free) and scan them himself. So, Ms. Gardner needs to say "Thank You", instead of trying to scare the heck out of everyone that justice may be thwarted if she doesn't get her way.

I am not saying it could pay for the cost of the trial by any stretch, but if you're gonna be crazy enough to cry "FIRE!", you better be ready to answer your critics.

You Go Girl!!

PS...I see you snuck "thwarted" in there.:great:

ITA!!!! And she does this the same day how many transcripts came out? Wouldn't that be from her office? I haven't counted, but there was at least what, forty transcripts? And how much money would that have brought in to her? Hmmm. Good thing R. Hornbsy gave Muzikman that advice. There goes more of your money, Gardener! Good job! You thwarted YOURSELF out of it!

While state budgets were being slashed and services to citizens eliminated or reduced, clerks around the state were expanding their staffs and handing out about $12 million in bonuses and pay raises. At the same time, the courts lost 240 positions. ~ Judge Belvin Perry

I think Lydia Gardner is afraid she might miss out on a bonus or two. On Tuesday, I went to the Traffic Division In Osceola County to pay a traffic ticket for my son. They had signs posted due to budget and staff cuts, only 4 windows were open. Even though there were several people there, I only had about a 15 minute wait. If Ms Gardner is crying because of no money, then maybe she should look at how Osceola County is running their offices.

Orange County allows people to pay fines due to the Clerk of Courts at Amscot. So what's the big deal? Close some of the satellite offices, accept more payments online and Amscot.

Is Lydia Gardner double dipping? It was in the news a couple of weeks ago several state employees where double dipping. Pensions, and salaries. Is she one of them? I don't know, but she could be.

While this case has become a 6 ring circus that begun to boar me so long ago......
I worry that like in California when they set free 17000 offenders...That this may happen in Florida as well.
If that happens in Florida not only will Casey be freed but thousands of other perps will also be freed.
This is how the Republican think we are saving money :banghead: At the expense of some other innocent people at risk :waitasec:
JUST MIND BUGGELING....

Seems to me the clerk spoke out of turn when she did not have all of the information. She well could be one of the double dippers. Florida seems to have a lot of those and we do not like it at all. They need to close that loop hole IMO. It just seems wrong.

Another case of someone attempting to exploit Caylee to push their own agenda. Play the "Caylee" card, feed the media and make the public spin. Geez!

Relating to murder trials and county budgets, I live in a very rural farming area and where we have had no major crimes in decades. In the past several years, there have been two instances of murder committed here (separate cases and I believe both were committed by non-residents of our county, but the crimes took place here) which will go to trial in the next couple of years. Rumor has it that our residential & commercial property taxes may increase to cover the costs of the trials. Never has there been any talk of the trials being postponed or a chance of them not taking place.

Ran across a news article about how smaller communities absorb the cost of these type of trials (even though these are nowhere near the $$$ of ICA's trial). Just thought it was interesting and gives some perspective on how various governmental agencies struggle to deal with the cost.

Big-time murder trials tax rural county budgets

Jacob Hilgendorf leaves the courtroom following his sentencing Feb. 22, 2011 at the Iowa County District Court House in Marengo. (Brian Ray/ SourceMedia Group News)

A  person found guilty of murder pays for the crime with life, but taxpayers and the county where the crime occurs pay in cash.

The burden is especially great for rural counties, which typically have smaller annual budgets and less experience in handling big or complicated cases.

...

The medical examiner’s expenses will be reimbursed by the state.

Rotter asked the Board of Supervisors to put aside any carry-over from his fiscal 2008-09 budget for the next year, knowing the trials were coming up. He replaced little equipment and saved more than $60,000, but $50,000 of it went into the 2009-10 fiscal budget for trials.

Wonder if any funds could have been budgeted ahead of time for this trial back in 2009 or 2010, realizing the expense that would be incurred? (Hope I don't have my years mixed up there.)

<<<<<<<<article snipped to address, trial is on track>>>>>>

State Sen. Mike Fasano, a Republican from New Port Richey who chairs the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Criminal and Civil Justice Appropriations, said at worst, funding to the clerks of courts around the state will be cut a little less than one percent. At best, he said, funding levels won't change at all.

In any case, Fasano said, it would not be a high-priority murder trial like Casey Anthony's that would be placed on hold due to financial considerations.

"Civil cases would be in jeopardy before any criminal cases," Fasano said. "She, as clerk of court, knows that better than anyone."

The Ninth Judicial Circuit court administration expense estimate for the trial comes to more than $361,000. The bulk of the costs involve housing, feeding and transporting 20 jurors for the duration of the eight weeks the trial is expected to run. Gardner's office would have to absorb much of the trial costs.
