If we're going by times now, maybe latching onto another culture could be seen as trendy and a money earner.
Back then I think it could have put an end to a career, especially claiming full blood.

They were quite racist times still.

I would have thought it was a brave thing to do, to risk your career over it.
Maybe she is one of those people ahead of their time who felt empathy for the first nation people, and set out to help them.

Is that confirmed where the questioning is coming from or speculation? Sorry, I can't tell from this post.

It is confirmed. Buffy Sainte Marie repeatedly stated that she was adopted, that she has no birth certificate, that she does not know her birthday. Her original birth certificate was obtained from vital statistics in Massachusetts. She was born Feb 20, 1941. That is where she was born, and where she grew up.

Indigenous people of Canada noticed wildly inconsistent claims she made throughout her life, which is a red flag that leads to investigation by Indigenous people.

Indigenous people of Canada have enormous financial and education privilege. There are also millions in funding to promote and support Indigenous people in their pursuit of their passions.

Look at all the awards the English-Italian woman, born in Massachusetts, stole from Indigenous People of Canada:

Funding for Indigenous People of Canada

I just watched the 5th Estate investigation into Buffy Sainte Marie. She was born in Massachusetts to English and Italian parents. She is not Canadian. She is not Indigenous. By claiming to be Indigenous and Canadian, she received special funding and privilege reserved for Indigenous people. She cheated Indigenous people out of opportunity intended to support and promote Indigenous people of Canada.

She is not a nice person. When her older brother tried to tell people that she is neither Canadian nor Indigenous, she threatened to publicly accuse him of being a sex offender.

Over the last few years, Indigenous people of Canada have investigated several prominent people who, in part, achieved success by pretending to be Indigenous. It is a widespread problem where non-Indigenous people exploited Indigenous people for personal profit and gain.

5th Estate: Buffy Sainte Marie

I feel very bad for her late parents and true family. She basically traded a successful career for them and their story. They seemed to have adored her.

As others have said, a quick DNA test and we’d have the answers. Instead she is just gaslighting and diverting attention away from the topic and reversing the blame.

She's a rather crafty manipulator. Without question, she's a thief who stole opportunity from Indigenous People of Canada. She can't get any lower than to steal from people who have struggled for generations.

She owes the Indigenous people an apology, and restitution in the form of rescinding all Aboriginal and Indigenous awards, as well as all honourary degrees she received from Canadian universities on the basis of being Indigenous and Canadian.

My earlier link didn't work

ETA my CBC links don't seem to work, I'll just link to CBC news, where it's the big story.

Personally, I smell cancel culture, turned towards an 82 year artist. It just creates hate, not appreciation or compassion.

The answer to each of these questions is yes, the English Italian woman from Massachusetts did all of this:

"Every story is carefully considered before it ever gets to air or online. In deciding what stories to pursue, we ask ourselves a few key questions:
  • Is this a person of significant influence?
  • Has this person benefited from their claims of Indigenous identity?
  • Has this person shaped public perceptions of what it means to be Indigenous in Canada?
  • Has this person taken space or opportunities away from others who might rightly deserve them?"
CBC Investigates

A non-Indigenous woman lying about her ancestry to develop Indigenous curricula for schools is very problematic. She deserves to be cancelled for cultural interference.

"In the 1990s, her Cradleboard Teaching Project developed Indigenous curricula for schools."

I saw Buffy Ste Marie in the early 60s, before she ’went native’.

When I started hearing that she was Native, I knew it was a publicity stunt.

Wondered why someone close to her didnt say ‘no you are not’.

Well, now we know her uncle was trying by writing to newspapers and tv shows, that his niece has ‘not one drop’ of Indian blood.

Then, her brother tried. We know where that went.

It is because of modern technology that this information can be widely spread in seconds.

Not our fault that she is now elderly.

If it would be wrong to parade in Blackface, is it not wrong to parade in Redface?

Buffy did much more than just parade, IMO.

Did she ever! She stole 60 years of opportunity from Indigenous People of Canada. The damage to the Indigenous community is so widespread and insidious that there can be no recovery. Each and every Indigenous person, who was passed over so that Buffy Sainte Marie could steal the award and recognition, was cheated out of a better life.

Buffy Sainte Marie deceived generations of Indigenous People of Canada for her personal benefit and profit. She should be ashamed of herself for the damage she caused.

For the non-Canadians posting here, it’s very important to understand that for the CBC to ‘bring down Buffy’ is stunning.

Buffy St Marie has been a media darling of the CBC for over half a century.

You cannot go through CBC Canadian content without finding oodles of fawning over Buffy.

I can assure you, doing this expose has rattled them to the bone.

Wow! What was her performance like without her being ‘Indigenous’?

Today there are some young performers on Tiktok performing her songs and they’re beautiful.

In school we had assemblies that featured her music and I’ve seen her at least once perform. The events were always presented as an Indigenous Canadian learning opportunity. I’ve always felt she was indignant and listening to her she made me feel guilty of my having done *something* to earn it.

And now to find out now she is an Italian-English American named Beverly Jean.

Thank you for the perspective. I get the impression that there are many broken hearts and a large slice of anger for the deception.

I know that information and have for years. I was asking if it's confirmed who is behind the current questioning of her and the OP provided a link.

None of the info so far is any surprise and I assumed anyone who knew of Buffy knew of her complicated background.

I wonder what this "gotcha" moment is supposed to be.

It's in the 5th Estate documentary that I linked. Everyone who was suspicious explains why they were suspicious. Indigenous People of Canada are behind the investigation into her ancestry, and are responsible for exposing Buffy Sainte Marie as a fraud.

She doesn't have a complicated background. She was born in Massachusetts to English and Italian parents. She is not Canadian, she is not Indigenous, and the only reason she concocted sexual abuse allegations was to silence her family and prevent them from revealing the truth about who she is.

Yeah, I hear all that. I just thought all this info was already known about Buffy. At least, I already knew it. That's all. Carry on.

You knew that she was a fraud who was lying nonstop about her personal history in order to steal opportunity from the Indigenous People of Canada?
