New York police and firefighters are responding to reports of an explosion in East Harlem, authorities say. There are at least 11 minor injuries, according to fire officials.

Images show smoke billowing from the site where a building appeared to have collapsed. The scene is near a major commuter rail line.

At this link, they are talking about sudden thawing and possible ground movement that may have caused a gas explosion. Very old building.

Now a 5 Alarm fire.

Weird that it is now a 5 alarm fire, yet I only see smoke. Haven't see any flames since this story broke. :waitasec:

How can there only be minor injuries if the building was occupied? That's probably (sadly) not accurate but it immediately made me think of the Bronx insurance fires of the 1970's.

That is EXACTLY what I thought.

A resident on CNN is saying what I wanted to say. He is saying that gentrification has taken over this part of the neighborhood and that it would be more profitable for them to NOT make repairs in order to build a new, better, more expensive building.

This is a pretty good link, lots of info and video. A retired FDNY Deputy Chief has now mentioned it could be terrorism, they just don't know yet. :sigh:

FWIW - I do believe this was a gas explosion. Nothing more, nothing less.

Someone called and reported smelling gas, just before the explosion.

1 man and 2 women or just two women? Early reports the first found dead was a man.
