Buried 1957 Plymouth to be unearthed in Okla.

At least they didn't bury it in the middle of July or August! June's weather shouldn't be too bad unless there is a tornado hovering above. I am glad we won't be standing out in the heat tho. Whew!

TULSA, Oklahoma (AP) -- Calling it "our King Tut's tomb," thousands of people watched as a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere was pulled from the ground where it had been buried for 50 years as a time capsule of American Midwest culture.

The concrete vault encasing the car may have been built to withstand a nuclear attack, but it couldn't keep away water.

At Friday's ceremony, protective wrapping was removed to show the mud-caked vintage vehicle covered in rust. Shiny chrome was still visible around the doors and front fender, and workers were able to put air in the tires.

"I'll tell you what, she's a mess. Look at her," said legendary car builder Boyd Coddington, who was unable to start the car as planned.

From the trunk, organizers pulled out some of the objects buried to celebrate Oklahoma's 50 years of statehood -- a 5-gallon can of leaded gasoline, which went for 24 cents a gallon in those days, and rusted cans of Schlitz beer.

The contents of a "typical" woman's handbag, including 14 bobby pins, lipstick and a bottle of tranquilizers, were supposed to be in the glove box, but all that was found looked like a lump of rotted leather.

A cool discovery! Bottles of tranquilizers were in a typical woman's purse in 1957????

Hey, thanks DK! I was wondering what ever happened to that car and it's contents. 24 cents a gallon for unleaded? And that wasn't even the cheapest gas I don't think. Wasn't the cheapest gas the leaded regular?

The leaded gas was what they said was 24 cents per gallon.

Man ... was I ever wrong on the condition of that car. On the other thread, I had said that I thought the car would be fine after being underground for 50 years in the vault and wrapped in plastic. That car is totally junk, it rusted and deteriorated far more than I thought it would. I was way off on that one, I'm very surprised!!

Stan hubby said the same thing you did. He figured the car would be in great shape.

LOL...tranquilizers???? Back then there was no such thing as unleaded gas. I think unleaded started around the early '70s??? The car is a total mess. I can imagine the disappointment when it was unwrapped. I'm sure they weren't expecting what they saw. Seems some kind of waterproof coating should have been put on the vault. Concrete is porous, seems they would have known that even in '57.

Well, I was born in 57, so I would guess my mom had a whole trunkload of tranquilizers in her car. :)

odd how we think we know how things will turn out, lol. im sure they had some info available in regard to corrosion in 1957...i guess these folks didnt bother to look into it first...:)

eta: i just notice how old this thread is, and have to agree that it would be fun to have been there when it was buried...

.... I was so surprised to see the car in that shape. Of course, who knew the vault would fill up with water. The car wouldn't have been in any worse shape if it had been submerged in a lake for 50 years. It reminds me of the current pictures of the Titanic! Without the water, I think the car would have been okay.

This is funny in a sad way. Did you read the comments?

They left a few cans of Shultz beer in the car (remember that beer?) Here is what one poster said that cracked me up.

And as for the Schlitz, anyone who has ever downed one knows it has the same corrosive effect on the human body.

Thanks for the update. Can you believe this was 3 years ago? Time not only flies it races by.
