Two police officers hit pay dirt in a Browns Mills woman's back yard this week when they unearthed $50,000 in cash she had buried. Police declined to divulge the woman's identity, her address or why she buried the cash. They said she asked police for help when she became afraid the money has been stolen.

Detective Sgt. David Jantas said the woman, who is 66, came to the police station Tuesday to report the theft, saying she had buried about $50,000 in her back yard in 2001.

Detective Brian Wechkus and Patrol Officer Jillian Schuler went to her home that afternoon, and the woman told the officers where she thought she had buried the money, Jantas said.

Using a long pole, the officers began poking into the soil in the area, Jantas said. Eventually, one of the pokes made a loud thud and, after some digging, they found the container of cash.
