CA - Aiden Leos, 6, fatally shot in road rage confrontation, Orange, 21 May 2021 *Arrests*

Then checking all the phones that pinged at that time in that area would be a big task but it has yielded results in the past. MOO
Another good idea.

I think this can be expanded further by factoring in near instinctual human behavior, commuting hours and cell phones:

In responses to threats (in this case arrest) or stress, most people instinctually retreat to a place of safety. This is usually their home. They then rest, collect themselves and figure out what to do next.

The 55 at 0815 is almost all commuters as people leave their homes to go to work. As a result, most cell phone pings should show a progression from a residential neighborhood to a commercial area.

The rage shooting could have been followed by a instinctual flight back home. So..... data mine for pings showing a sudden "turn around" and a return to the residential area where the pattern originated.

Going back into human behavior.....

Most criminals, naturally, want to escape from the scene of their crime. In flight mode, the entire highway could be perceived as the scene of the crime. So..... look for a ping pattern showing a sudden exit from the highway, then taking surface streets.

The ping pattern could also indicate apparent destination changes as the shooter thought of where to flee to, and how to get there. The end destination could even be a commercial area (work), or to account for the shooter driving through, taking another highway to a distant area. The key is a sudden exit and taking surface streets.

agree, and do you know if that is a tolled HOV lane? if they were in the HOV lane, they either had a transponder, or the cams got the plates for a citation

There is no toll where the shooting occurred. However, there are toll lanes a few miles north of the shooting on the 91 freeway. There is some congestion on the EB 91 in the morning, but it is much worse in the afternoon.

Escape routes include 3 or 4 off-ramps before 91 toll, 91 EB and 91 WB.

With the amount of traffic in the area, there are a lot of cameras. I just hope they can retrieve relevant video from them.

well, we still have hope the CHP is dumping DMV's system for white VW golfs or arteons (i linked golf upthread but here is arteon)

Awesome.

Presuming that the white VW station wagon description is accurate, I think that there is going to be an arrest very quickly either from data mining or the reward. 150K is going to melt pretty much anybody's family or friendship based loyalty to the shooter.

I really hope the model year can be estimated. Dealers track customers to send sales promotions or trade in enticements.

If the car is late model, maybe discretely contact area dealers for the names of VW station wagon purchasers in the past several years?

This information can probably be given freely as one would think that any seller or any vendor is free to disclose from whom they bought anything and to whom they sold anything if they chose.

Then, obtain the addresses of the purchasers and use other data mining techniques to see who might be a regular 55 commuter.

Cant forget to ask area homeless who may panhandle at those off ramps. As I frequent thrift stores in a homeless area, I have had more than a few conversations with them.

The homeless can range from sadly severely drug or alcohol fogged to extremely observant about anything in their "area of operations". Lets hope that any by those off ramps are observant.

Mother of Aiden Leos, 6, killed in California road rage shooting says: 'It feels like my life is over' - ABC11 Raleigh-Durham
[...]

The boy's mother and other family members gathered Saturday at a growing memorial on the Walnut Avenue overpass near the site of the shooting, where people have left balloons, flowers, stuffed animals and expressions of sympathy.

The family expressed their thanks for the outpouring of support from the community, but Cloonan also called for justice as her son's killer remains on the loose.

[...]

"He meant the world to me, and it feels like my life is over," she added. "That was my baby. I've never, never thought pain like this could exist."

[...]

It is believed the shooting was triggered by a road-rage incident. A man and a woman were in the suspect vehicle. The suspects remain outstanding. Anyone who may have information is asked to call the CHP's Santa Ana office at (714) 567-6000.

Aiden Leos: Yorba Linda school where killed 6-year-old boy was student honors him - ABC7 Los Angeles
"There was a car behind me that cut me off abruptly. I was in the carpool lane with my son. And as I started to merge away from them. I heard a really loud noise and my son said 'Ow'," she said.

I dont know.....

Part of me thinks that this decreases the chances of them being local, or even relatively "local" commuters as ride shares are probably relatively rare and a casual ride share partner of the shooter may well of been inclined to talk by now. As a result, data mining may need to identify possible out of area suspects.

Then again, nobody, well almost nobody, ever gets on SOCAL highways during rush hour unless they are commuters and need to. Rather, it was very common knowledge that it was better to wait until say, 9:30 as you would save driving time as traffic breaks up. So perhaps they still are local commuters?

Good post.

The following is MOO

I used to live off the 91 and took the 91 and 55 daily. You are correct that there are a lot of locals commuting to work. However, There are a few things I can think of that feed into the probabilities of commuter vs. outsider.
The 91 is one of only a few logical routes to Las Vegas and “the River” from Orange County. “The River” refers to the Colorado River. There are several spots along it that are popular weekend getaways for those who enjoy drinking, wake boarding/ skiing, drinking, offf-roading, drinking, jet-skiing and drinking. For me, the 2nd best time to head out to Vegas/Havasu is Friday morning . Though there is morning traffic heading east, the morning commute going west is much tougher, jammed with commuters going to jobs in Orange County and returning home to more affordable housing east of OC. So while EB commuters are out there at 8 am, there is also a lot of Vegas and river traffic trying to get through the 91 before noon on Friday when the real traffic arrives.

I agree that two persons in the suspect vehicle isn’t the recipe for a successful secret.

Great insight into the possibility of local "Weekend Get Away" perpetrators who are "in the know" abut the best time to escape. A cell phone ping data mining should definetly include the possibility of 'Vegas and "The River" being the shooter's destination.

Using your 'Vegas / The River possibility. the cell phone ping pattern might reflect one or more behavior changes:

- Flight from the shooting scene: Perpetrators instinctually exit the 55 after shooting. Not thinking they hit anybody, they collect themselves. Cellphone pings reflect them taking one of OC's miles long surface streets to the 91 and then east.

- Newsflash / delayed return: Arrive at party place and start to party. Though hardly news junkies, they eventually hear they murdered a child. The party is over. Stressed, they extend a day-or two, or three, while they figure out what to do. They then leave for home. Cell phone pings reflect the longer stay. Maybe check for hotel extensions?

- Avoiding the scene of the crime:
Upon returning home, they instinctually avoid the 55. Cell phone pings reflect a different route.

I fear the person who was with the shooter may be in danger. MOO.

Thanks so much for the encouragement.

I am thinking that the date mining search can take two focuses:
A. Tracking down the car if description is accurate
B. Cell phone ping pattern analysis.

VIN numbers contain a lot information if one knows how to read them. This information includes make, model and original color. VIN numbers are part of registration records which are kept in Sacramento.

Maybe.... have some IT types create a simple (well for them) program that includes VW vin information, SOCAL zip codes, then use it to search computerized car registrations. Ideally, it should pull up every white VW station wagon in California and the zip code where it is registered.

Then.... apply another software filter to pull up the names and phone numbers of people identified as owning white VW station wagons and whose Zip codes are in OC and say, far north SD.

Then.... go to the cell companies. Ask them if their IT guys or girls can create some software that not only allows a phone number to be inputted for ping patterns, but also uses the ping pattern to create an roughly estimated travel route that is shown on street / highway maps f0r easy visualization and review.

I really like Splevy's insight that the two perps might be a couple going to 'Vegas or "The River" for the weekend. Use the handy ping patterns / estimated travel route software to ID these people. Also use the ping pattern / estimated travel map to look for possible behavioral changes of concern.

The police have given out very little information info about the suspects described by the mother.
-white sedan (possibly VW)
-1 male 1 female

No details on approximate age or any other physical description of the suspects, other than a determination of the gender of the suspects.

I believe police are combing throughly through cctv, and dashcam and local business videos that they requested from drivers and people in that area at the time. They are probably searching cctv, ring door cameras etc in other areas too, leading up to the highway where this happened.
Cell phone data as well.

The police have offered a generous reward, and I have no doubt are working around the clock on this, with all hands on deck.

They are being very quiet and very methodical it seems.

In regards to descriptions, perhaps they are worried about not only getting a fragmented description from the witness from due to stress, also getting alot of false leads:

- A white guy with brown hair driving a white looking sedan? My ex husband had a weapon and a mean streak. He is white and has brown hair- or is more blonde? But, I know he drives a light colored sedan. Anyways, he deserves to be arrested- for something.

Then, there is the creepy guy I went to school with.... .

Yeah, that does happen. Folks turning in anyone they have a gripe with.

I feel like a shooter had to have shot with their arm out of the window. And good aim to hit a moving target the way they did.

It most definitely was witnessed. ?

most of the river ppl would have jeeps and trucks but any car is possible. i just hope the DMV yields some good info.

I agree. I was going to mention it, but it still fits for Vegas....along with every other type of motor vehicle.
