SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

"Police said Monday the Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the body as Alex Holden. He is the 25-year-old Sacramento man who went missing on New Year’s Eve.

Sacramento police said a group who’d been searching for Holden on Sunday are responsible for finding the body.

“The description was very similar to what Mr. Holden was wearing at the time and our investigators do believe it's him,” Sacramento Police Officer Karl Chan said.

“Just remember the 25 years we had with him. That’s all we can do,” Calvin Holden, Alex Holden’s father said after learning the news.

It was the worst outcome for the family, news they never wanted to hear.

“We kept hoping that he just was out and would come back. He was hurt in the camp somewhere,” Calvin Holden said.

"There had been several search efforts to find Alex Holden. Calvin Holden told KCRA that the body was found with his son's personal items.

“He has his phone and his passport and debit card and is dressed like we thought he was when he left the apartment,” Calvin Holden said. “The last few hours bring some closure but it’s very difficult."

That’s merely the father expressing his prior hope that his son was hurt, and would ultimately be found alive.

He’s not saying that this was foul play, or that he was in fact hurt in the camp.

Since Alex was found downstream from the H street readings you linked, I wonder if tidal influence would be a factor.

At the I Street bridge on the Sacramento river just below the confluence with the American River the tides can make a difference in measurement in feet during a day. JMO

The American River is on the north side of Sacramento. The I Street Bridge is over the Sacramento River, which is on the east side of Sacramento. I'm not sure how closely you could compare the two.

The worst news for a parent IMO but he’s been found so there is some comfort in that.

I am very curious why he had his passport - it is unusual IMO to carry this unless you need it for travel - or is this new for the twenty somethings ?

The American River is on the north side of Sacramento. The I Street Bridge is over the Sacramento River, which is on the east side of Sacramento. I'm not sure how closely you could compare the two.

I'm just wondering if the tides that cause the Sacramento River to rise and drop by feet at I Street could cause a rise and drop of some kind on the lower American River.

I'm just wondering if the tides that cause the Sacramento River to rise and drop by feet at I Street could cause a rise and drop of some kind on the lower American River.

I'm under the impression that the American River flows downstream to the Sacramento River.

So wouldn't a rise at I Street affect that part of the Sacramento River that was downstream from there?

An autopsy was performed, according to Calvin, the cause of death to be released to the family later this week.

Alex’s father says his son was an adventurer and an all-around kind person.

“He filled every second of his life,” Calvin said. “When he wanted to do something, he threw himself into it. He started running, he did a half marathon, marathon. I was going to go out and watch him do a 100-mile race in April. He was open, gregarious. He wanted to make every second count. I'm under the impression that the American River flows downstream to the Sacramento River.

So wouldn't a rise at I Street affect that part of the Sacramento River that was downstream from there?

I'm guessing that if the water level rises from tidal forces where the Sacramento and American Rivers meet which is just a bit upstream from I street that maybe it could be a factor in this case. JMO

The coroner made no announcement -- accidental death was the opinion of an unnamed detective.

During research on coroners reports earlier today I found that Sacramento charges eleven dollars for a copy of their reports on cases within the last three years.

I may get a copy on this one. JMO.

This seems like a case where that conclusion would come quick.

Even if there wasn’t water in the lungs (there very well may be), the lack of any trauma and the overall circumstances, just lend themselves to this being an accident.

I imagine toxicology will be performed, but don’t think the results will change anything.

Which is precisely what many of us thought from the beginning. A tragic set of circumstances that we see far too often.

It could be that he was found at just the right time, when the water had receded. And high tide at other times of day would have hidden him from view, which would explain why people who canvassed that area, including drone searches, didn't find him.

That link gives a 2.5 foot rise twice a day. That's definitely enough to cover him.
