Andrew has been missing for 48 years today.

It's also possible he had a "destination suicide" in mind. Maybe he intended to hitchhike to San Francisco to jump off the Golden Gate. I can see bringing the .357 along in case he balked at the jump. Either way, if he had mental illness, it's hard to say what he was thinking (or thought he was thinking). I still believe if he wasn't seen hitchhiking, his body is potentially closer to home.

Ordinarily I wouldn't consider suicide in a hitchhiking case, but the fact that Andrew took a gun with him stood out to me. I guess he could've taken it for protection, but it's my understanding that hitchhiking was common in the '70s. Out of all the hitchhiking cases I've read on here, this is the first I've seen that mentions the hitchhiker taking a weapon. Additionally, Andrew "may suffer from mental illness," so I think suicide unfortunately is a possibility.
I agree. I'm wondering if maybe the suspected mental illness was taking a toll on him physically. Also, we don't know what possible relationship problems he may have been having (rejection, bad break-up the family was unaware of, etc.) jmo

Does this person look like Andrew? If his hair was cut and dyed - he also has a lot of moles.

I think it'd be difficult to have black hair come up light enough to then dye in what looks like a blond, naturally lightened from dark blond roots. And especially diffcult then with what was available.
But I also believe this is one of Alcala's photos that was released as a cropped version. The original shows breasts, and you can see the swells on the side of the chest in this attachment.

Regarding the hair, It doesn’t look natural to me at all. In the 1970s Sun-In was popular and it would look yellow if the hair was dark. Have you seen the original photo from Alcala’s photos? I agree, there are swells on the side of the chest, but that is normal for males as well as females. Please look closely at the nose and mouth- if you zoom in, you can also see the shape of the left ear behind their hair. Do you see any resemblance, or am I imagining it? I’m genuinely asking you this, I’m not trying to be rude.

I see a passing resemblance in the bone structure of the face and fairly impactful blue eyes. But I'd think it unusual, assuming Andy was able to achieve a non-orange blond, that he also changed his part. But what seals it for me is the upper front teeth are very different, even in one unclear shot of Andy's - they don't match Alcala's picture.

Meanwhile, possibly discussed on a different thread, there are other shots of the Alcala girl both similar to that one (her paleness exagerrated by the flash), and IMO with another girl fully clothed and in public. I believe she may be from Denmark.

With Andy taking off with a .357 and apparent mental issues, I don't think the totality of his circumstances mesh.

I don't find it unusual that he took a weapon with him if he was hitchhiking. What I do find unusual is a month passing prior to reporting him missing. Hard to know what family relationships were like, but to me, with brother having no knowledge and month occurring over a general holiday period, and relatively close distance between missing location and said destination it seems like a long time.
