Anthony Torres, SF activist known as Bubbles, shot to death in Tenderloin

San Francisco activist, artist and DJ Anthony Torres, who was best known by his gender-nonconforming alter ego, Bubbles, was fatally shot early Saturday morning, according to his attorney and friends.

Torres, 44, was a fixture in the San Francisco club scene, regularly DJing house parties, marches and events. He was shot and killed Saturday at around 3 a.m. on the corner of Larkin and Myrtle streets in the Tenderloin, his attorney said.

“The city loses a loving, special character, the type of person that makes San Francisco the great, unique place that it is,” said Jim Reilly, 44, Torres’ attorney and friend.

An LGBT disc jockey was shot and killed near a Tenderloin strip club early Saturday morning in an attack that an attorney for the victim is calling a hate crime.

Anthony Torres, an activist, artist and performer who is known as Bubbles, was fatally shot at 3 a.m. outside the New Century strip club on Larkin and Myrtle streets, according to friends, neighbors and his attorney.

[...]

As word of the killing spread Sunday, friends brought photographs of Torres to the scene of the homicide. The pictures show him riding a bicycle in high heels and beaming in a black and white dress.

Someone placed a sign that read “Rest in Power Bubbles” on the sidewalk public restroom across from the New Century where Torres is believed to have been shot. A passerby walked by the memorial Sunday evening and muttered “not Bubbles” in disbelief.

“This is a hate crime,” said attorney Jim Reilly, who has previously represented Torres. “For a transgender activist to be gunned down on [his] own street shouldn’t stand and won’t stand.”

The Tenderloin has historically been a safe place for gay and transgender residents of The City. The neighborhood birthed one of the first riots for transgender rights at Compton’s Cafeteria in 1966. A historic gay bar called the Gangway is also on the block where Torres was shot.

Though his attorney initially referred to Torres as a transgender woman, friend and local DJ Buckner Williams said Torres identified as a gay man “who enjoyed wearing women’s clothing and makeup.”

Beloved LGBT Activist and DJ Bubbles Fatally Shot in San Francisco

According to the SF Examiner, Anthony Torres was known to friends and fans by his performance moniker Bubbles. His attorney is pursuing the case as a hate crime. Jane Kim of the Tenderloin Board of Supervisors says there is not yet enough information to rule the murder a hate crime, but has confirmed surveillance footage of the incident and the pursuit of a person of interest.

Torres was a beloved figure in both the underground house and techno scene, as well as the LGBT community.

Death of Local Character Bubbles Leads to Investigation of Strip Club

Bubbles, 44, was born Anthony Torres but 20 years ago took on the non-gender-conforming alter ego, often going by the pronoun "they." Bubbles said in an interview that the persona was a product of San Francisco because in the city "you can get away with doing this."

[...]

"Anthony was who I desperately wanted to be, but couldn’t even imagine having the courage to be. Anthony got taunted, chased, beaten up, threatened, and suspended on an almost daily basis, and somehow he really couldn’t care less, even then," Wilson wrote on Facebook. "Anthony’s self-confidence and innate belief in theirself was truly awe-inspiring."
