Michael Jace, accused of murdering wife, gets trial postponed so lawyers can look through victim's phone

The “Shield” actor accused of gunning down his wife in front of their two young sons won a trial delay Thursday so his lawyers can scour the dead woman's cellphone.

A judge granted the postponement two days before jury selection was set to begin.

Defense lawyer Jason Sias argued in court that actor Michael Jace had suspicions about his wife carrying on an affair and may have snapped moments before the shooting due to something on the device.

“(He) may have been looking at something relevant that pushed him over the edge,” Sias said

Both sides are due back in court next month to set a new trial date.

Los Angeles police investigators obtained a method to open the locked iPhone belonging to the slain wife of "The Shield" actor Michael Jace, according to court papers reviewed by The Times...

LAPD Det. Connie Zych wrote that on March 18, the department found a "forensic cellphone expert" who could "override the locked iPhone function"...

Investigators have contended that the actor and his wife argued "about their relationship" via text message shortly before he opened fire, according to the search warrant.

'You like to run so much. Why don't you try running to heaven?': Shield actor Michael Jace 'taunted his wife before shooting her to death in front of their two young sons'

Michael Jace, 53, planned the killing because he believed his wife April was having an affair and wanted a divorce, prosecutors said Monday

They say he shot her in the back before firing two more rounds into her legs within sight of their sons, who were eight and five at the time

Jace's defense attorney acknowledged he had killed his wife and told the court in Los Angeles the case was about 'why it was done'

The couple had been married for 11 years when April Jace died in May 2014 aged 40

Former "Shield" actor Michael Jace was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison in his wife's killing.

A jury found the 53-year-old guilty in May of second degree murder. After deliberating for less than three hours over the course of two days, the jury also found true an allegation that Jace personally used a handgun.

"Shield" actor Michael Jace sparked some courtroom outrage Friday when he broke his silence at sentencing and claimed he didn't plan to kill his wife April Jace in May 2014.

The statement prompted April's mom Kay Henry to shake her head in disgust and walk out of the gallery saying she didn't want to listen to "this sh--."

"There is no justification for my actions on that night at all," said Jace, who was convicted of second-degree murder last month by a Los Angeles jury.

"I am profoundly sorry for the pain that I have caused everyone - everyone who knew April and loved April. There is no replacing April," he said.

"My only daughter April invited me to church every Sunday, every Sunday," she said. "Since May 19, 2014, my belief in God and his role as protector has been shaken to the core."

She asked the judge to sentence Jace to the maximum.

"I often told April she was the best daughter in the world," she recalled. "She would laugh and say, 'Oh mommy.' … I say again my daughter April Denise was the best daughter in the world. My life will never be the same."
