Case History:
Passenger (hitchhiker), designated "John Doe #09-74," in a van/truck that rear-ended a parked semi-tractor trailer and burned. He appeared to be about 20, and told fellow travelers his first name was "Terence" (or "Terrance"), but went by the nickname "Lee". He was picked up hitch-hiking in Council Bluffs, Iowa (Herbie's 76 Truck Stop), in route to Reno, Nevada, where he said he was going to pick-up a paycheck for a dishwashing job. He stated that he was originally been from Florida, but had recently lived in Indiana. Identity may only be established with dental X-rays and DNA.

Was Terry Rogers ruled out as a match?

Unless Terry's rule-out is not publicly listed on NamUs, no, they haven't ruled him out for this John Doe. The only rule-out listed is Mark Wilson, who went missing from Quincy, CA in late 1967. (The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs))

Thanks for checking! I can’t see the rule-outs on namus myself.
I wonder if we should suggest him as a match again. The circumstances surrounding Terry’s disappearance don’t really match up unless he just wanted to disappear and leave his old life behind. But it all seems a bit extreme to me...
Nevertheless, he needs to be officially ruled out because all the stats match as well as the name and that just seems too much of a coincidence to ignore.

Terry’s Namus profile:

Terry Rogers was last seen Memorial Day weekend in Bend, OR. He had permission to be on a private campsite about a mile below Meadow Camp, southeast of Bend on the Deschutes River. His campsite was below a bluff where he had parked his pickup truck. Two of his friends notified authorities when they failed to find him at the campsite on Tuesday evening May 29th, 1973. His Truck with a bag of groceries in it was still parked on the bluff. Down below at his campsite were his glasses, wallet, camping equipment, etc., but he was nowhere to be found. Friends and members of the Deschutes County Search and Rescue unit had conducted a three-day search on foot, horseback and helicopter, but again he was nowhere to be found. Terry lived and worked in the surrounding area and was attending Central Oregon Community College at the time. He was an experienced camper and familiar with the terrain.
