Maybe, it comes down to if/when Barbara is found, this is what she'll be wearing, as you say, the rest doesn't make sense. jmo
It's possible if she IS wearing the black bikini and is deceased, she still may not have been hiking in that outfit.
Makes other theories come to mind.

I just looked at the 10 day forecast for Barstow CA and Needles CA on Weather Underground and it shows how different the temps are for both nearby areas.

Barstow's highs are in the 70's and 80's for the next 10 days and Needles are in the 80's and 90's for the same time period.

I guess it depends on where exactly you are in the desert.

Weather Underground

Weather Underground
Barstow is considered "high desert", Needles is not.

Happy to hear someone is willing to go search. Exactly how many people and where will this WS member be searching, do we know?

I’m not a local and didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
So, my question is - how far is it from the place Barbara went missing to the closest airport - which appears to be McCarren?

  • #824
Good question about what RT was wearing--- what did he have on when the 911 responders arrived ?
Dressed in a long-sleeved shirt for the sun ? A hat ?
But he let Barbara go off in a swimsuit ?
We don't know.

I was responding to posts without reading forward, so my bad. I really thought the member was organizing a search, I understand the confusion now.

Google Maps

Needles, Sun Valley, Lake Havasu, Jean Sport, and Twentynine Palms are the closes airports, according to Google Maps. Needles airport is 1 hour, 20 minutes away.

Las Vegas is the closest major airport. However, there's a small airstrip in between Bullhead City and where she disappeared. I posted the coordinates for it a week or so ago, I can look them up again. I am pretty sure that there are small airports in Barstow (1-1.5 hours away?) and certainly one in Henderson (less than an hour from Bullhead) and a very small airport 5 miles south of Needles (that would be the closest for civil aviation where flight plans are required).

I don't know how airports figure in the story, but those are the airports I'm finding. If one is thinking of an international airport, then that's Vegas. But you can take a small plan (including some commercial flights) into Henderson and Barstow, for sure.

You think he had the final say in what she wore?

Thanks @Kapua and @10ofRods

I was interested in airports both for the small pilot owner such as a Cessna (or renter) as well as an airport for commercial flights such as Frontier/SW/AA.

I was going to check pricing from IND into LAS. And from other airports. Usually flights into Vegas are cheaper than other destinations.

Many of us have worked in research and searching on many cases over the years ..
I have never seen a "Missing Person Case" with such silence from LE ...
They should be sharing Everything they can to help find a missing person..
So yes.... This one must be way bigger then just a lost soul.
jmho

I've been discussing with colleagues inside and outside LE and SAR how this is the new trend (total silence). Some departments are more known for it than others but it's really concerning. It's not just missing persons cases, it's cases-in-general. It allows LE to be pretty unhindered in conducting cases however they wish. Is this becoming a cold case? Sure looks like it.

They won't speak to media, but they won't honor FOIA requests because it isn't closed yet. Of course, LE is just as puzzled as all the rest of us are about Barbara. I can find no evidence of search warrants filed either in SB or in Mojave County, AZ. So. I seriously doubt "all the electronics" are in the hands of LE, they've probably given his phone back to RT (but who knows?)

I do hope you are right, @cazador and the reason here is that there are leads going to something. It's now filed in my mind with all those crazy Missing411 cases (most of those have much more plausible explanatory theories than Barbara's case).

Weird Results. Anyone Else Get Them?

From post by @Micheline as source to weather
Mojave National Preserve Weather Forecast, CA - WillyWeather.

When I click on ^, first result is image w "California, USA" as (more or less) header, then weather grid w temps, etc..
At lower left of image,"Detail forecast."
Clieck, result is "Coarsegold, CA" --- not even in San Bernardino County, but Madera County.
and my address bar shows "msn.com" * blah, blah.
Does anyone else get these same kind of weird results from @Micheline's link? Thx in adv.

If so, no wonder temps & weather other ppl find are waaay diff from Micheline.

_____________________________________________________
* "Coarsegold, CA - MSN Weather"

Other example or weird result.
I also searched fictional/hypo place name "xyz california weather forecast willy weather".
Press "enter" first result is image w "California, USA" as (more or less) header,
then weather grid w temps, etc..
At lower left of image, Click "Detail forecast".
Then shows "Coarsegold, CA" etc.

I’m going to guess that she really was not in the habit of long desert hikes wearing next to nothing. I can believe she was used to hanging out around her home or a campsite in a bikini but hiking for an hour or more in the heat of the day is so very different. If she hung out while camping she was likely able to step in and out of shade or shelter as needed.

I have serious doubts that she was on a 2-mile walk on July 12.

I'm with you and @MissBetsy on this one. I don't think they went an entire mile into the desert and then back again. I think they walked to the nearest boulder formation, hung out in the shade, then started back. This is just my intuition based on what she was wearing and what they were carrying (per RT's version). Since LE has not announced anything that would put RT's version in doubt (and has assured our VI that there's some evidence for RT's version), that's my opinion.

To me, my null hypothesis is that this day started out like any travel day for this couple, perhaps with the last minute decision to leave Lexi behind. They forgot their ice. Barbara may have been in a bit of a rush at the kennel. All of this makes sense for a fairly major undertaking (taking a new 5th wheeler into the Mojave during July, aiming perhaps for one of the FCFS campsites, hoping to enjoy merely being outdoors in the desert despite the heat).

What time they got to K/HH intersection and what they did next is still a complete mystery. They could have walked a mile out, done their climb and panorama photo right there, then walked a mile back (in which case, surely they also cracked open their water?) If they were pausing to take photos here and there, this would have taken as long as 2 hours. Perhaps they sat in the A/C of the trailer to try it out. Maybe they practiced rolling out the awning to make sure it all worked properly.

Sudden changes in temperatures (going from A/C to heat) can be very hard on older people and increases risk of a heart attack (source: Ranger Michael P. Ghiglieri, Grand Canyon; I also have a further bibliography on women, aging and heat - lots of research on the topic given recent heat waves in France and Australia). The mechanism for said heart attacks in women (in particular) involves estrogens and is similar to a stress-induced heart attack associated with emotional distress.

The man who died in Zuma, Malibu about 3 weeks ago apparently had a heat induced heart attack. It was 94° when the paramedics arrived. He was from a place (Thousand Oaks) where it is routinely 100° or above in the summer, but everyone has A/C. I don't know who it was on this thread who pointed it out first, but one thing that must be factored in is the Thomas's ordinary lifestyle. If dog walking in the early morning was Barbara's only daily outdoor activity, if they went directly into an A/C vehicle from an A/C house to an A/C store, then 2 hours outside in the heat would not be typical and I truly wonder when the last time was, that they did this.

I also wonder about the added emotional load (on Barbara) of her brother's health issues. My own mom died 48 hours after learning that a beloved nephew, a boy she had helped raised, was diagnosed with a very serious (usually fatal) illness in his late 50's. She literally collapsed (aged 86) and a latent health issue took over and it was very fast.

For those of you who are convinced that there was criminality involved here, I see that side too. But I can't help but focus first on less nefarious probabilities. I also think there's a gray area (similar to negligent homicide) in between.

Feeling very sad for Barbara today.

@Micheline, a lot of what we are posting (and doing behind the scenes) are preparatory or part of a search. Right now, I know 4 people who have gone out there (and one of them is in the beginning stages of finding ways to do more searching - it isn't as easy as just driving 3-4 hours and jumping out of the car). Feel free to join in by attempting to do some organization, networking is key to the kind of search you're describing (but there are other kinds of searches and ways of organizing grid searches that can make use of a smaller search party in a large area like the one in which Barbara disappeared). Right now, hydrology analysis is crucial because it has been raining/flash flooding and skeletal remains would be displaced in predictable ways (even if subject to scavenging).

I don't understand why the silence is concerning to you. Frustrating yes, but to me, it's absolutely 100% typical of this jurisdiction.

I think @katydid23 cited the McStay case as an example, @GordianKnot provided link(s) relative to the Corwin case, and very early on, I commented about the Duke Flores case.

Below are examples from a quick Google search using the term "tight-lipped." I could probably find hundreds more if I searched using "declined to comment" "refused to comment," etc.

So, my question is - how far is it from the place Barbara went missing to the closest airport - which appears to be McCarren?

@Mimosa Mornings
There is scheduled air service for Laughlin- Bullhead City AZ, 2 airlines.

Flight Info
But --- cheaper $ to fly into McCarren/Las Vegas than other smaller airports?

Anyone flying in should also consider schedules of shuttle services from air destination city to town/area of search.
"shuttle service las vegas to laughlin" show numerous sites for shuttles, some assoc'ed w hotels where searchers may stay.

{{ETA Rental car - another possibility. The agency locations and costs factor in too.
A lot depends on amt of time avail for travel & search.}}

Did they search the quarry?

We have no idea where exactly they searched. Neither LE nor SAR has responded to individual inquiries from some of us nor to inquiries from MSM.

I personally do not consider a case "cold" until it's a year old, but that's me.

I'm more concerned with when SBCS thinks it's "cold" or back-burnered. Your faith, Kapua, is really important to me personally, though. On the bright side, the Needles/Colorado River division of SBCS has very few missing person cases (if we go by what's on their public site - which, unfortunately, still doesn't list Barbara as missing...looks like it takes months for them to even get a bulletin up)

Really, your only choice would be to rent a car (unless you are quite well-off). Hiring a private car and having it sit at the side of the road while you searched would be expensive (as in $1000 a day expensive, per my own research). Having someone drop you off at such a distant location, and then re-calling the car later would be almost as expensive (it's almost 2 hours from Vegas). It also would not be safe, IMO, unless you were meeting up with a group.

Primm, NV is closer. We've stayed there many times. You can get airport shuttles to Primm, but then you'd need a rental car or a car service. Rental car would be way cheaper and also allow for varying places of starting the search.

There are no towns within an hour of the search site. Well, there's Baker. But good luck getting a rental car or a hired car or anything more than the lowest type of hotel and food service in Baker (IME, obviously not a fan of Baker).

YOU are AMAZING, @PommyMommy Not only is this department known as tight-lipped, but it has some other problems, too. The fact that the military was involved in Erin's case probably pushed that one up toward the light. I wonder what their homicide clearance rate is. I read an article two days ago about homicide in California, in which all counties were clustered very close to the average for all of California. Two counties were safer (Orange and one other, I've forgotten) and two were dramatically less safe: San Bernardino and San Francisco. Of course.

Trying not to say more - you just said it all.
