I wonder what the consequences would of been if BT took the only key, then became separated. It could potentially of been 2 missing individuals.

I would then have to inquire how long it would of been before family would of noted that they were both missing?

Good points, we walk and hike in the southern summer heat and humidity, and we aren’t about to do it with beer. It’s called water. Any kind of alcohol dehydrates.
Even more so in an older person. I have no doubt that RT and BT know all of this. Surely at their age they’ve been around the block a few times.

I was really, really trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it’s getting harder with each day. Jmo

Well, we know it was typical for her to drink beer while participating in outdoor activities so she must have known the effects.
Maybe she drank plenty of water along with her beer.
Also, beer is the least dehydrating of all the different types of alcohol.
(It's about 95% water) Imo

In that case I don't think RT would have been missing. He had a phone to call for help unlike Barbara.

We don't know how many beers she had or if she had other alcohol. People with trailers often have quite a bit of beverage and food inside. They left at 8:15 am. All we know about is the one beer (no word on the size of the cup).

I would assume RT drank nothing, as he was driving. He had 2 hours before the police arrived, though.

No one knows his drinking habits. Only the VI might know any of this. How would we, internet strangers, know any of this?

The VI probably doesn't know either, he doesn't live with them or even near them.

Bill Ewasko famously had a cell phone with him when he was lost; theory is it ran out of juice when he finally was able to get a signal.

We haven't heard anything about his drinking habits or if he had a drink that day, at least not that I know of.

All we know is that it was typical for Barbara to drink beer, and she was drinking one the last time Robert saw her.

The VI did not get into specifics like how much or how often. Imo

There is a reason hikers/SAR carry methods to communicate with one another. If this had of been further in and they became separated, it had the potential to become 2 missing individuals, which I will assume may not of been reported for a number of days ?

SAR does. Most hikers carry cell phones at best. I've never seen a hiker with a proper HT.

Yes, but she wasn't there. And it wasn't *that* hot. It was that hot in my laundry room today. It's true we slow down when it's 104-105, but that's not "intense" to me. 115 is intense (those 10 degrees make a huge difference). IOW, the shade of the trailer should have been ample. At noon, I suppose it might not have been enough - but if RT is truthful, both of them knew he would be arriving a mere 10-15 minutes later. The caves are not close. If she was pissed off or already disoriented, then maybe she went to the caves (having not found the key under the rock).

But she wasn't at the caves or anywhere in between the caves and the trailer. If she was that disoriented, I'd think she would not make it far.

Main message though: people who separate in desert conditions, where one doesn't have water, is a very very bad idea.

One's mind does go to desperate solutions, though, in heat situations (and 105 is hot enough for a person who is dehydrated and doesn't have on heat-reflectant clothes and hat to begin to be very compromised, especially a very thin older person; our fat cells store water and fat is insulation from a bit of heat).

You make some good points. I would assume that friends or family that interact face to face with them often would be able to comment on their drinking habits.

I guess it's possible that someone with a drinking problem would communicate that to a far away family member but I'm not sure how likely that would be. JMO

Right. I carry a satellite device that alerts for rescue when camping deep in the wilderness out of cellphone range. Also keep it in the vehicle.

Yes, probably not for a couple of days or more.

Barbara's family probably would have expected to hear from her before she left for her trip to see them, but it may have taken several days before they realized something was wrong. I think they knew they were going away for a few days.

Unless they had any plans with other family or friends sooner than that, I guess. Imo
