Vehicles Damaged by BB or Pellet Guns in Southern California Freeways – NBC Los Angeles
[...]

In all, the CHP believes there have been nearly 60 incidents throughout Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties over the past few weeks. No injuries have been reported in any of the attacks.

White vehicles have been spotted in each of the attacks, but no specific descriptions of the cars or suspects have been provided.

On Thursday, shootings were reported in Corona, Anaheim and near the 91 and 5 freeway interchange in Buena Park.

A driver on the eastbound 91 in Corona told the California Highway Patrol that someone fired a projectile that hit the driver's side window on his sedan at about 11 p.m. Tuesday. The victim was not injured.

Shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday, a Toyota Camry sustained damage from a BB or pellet that hit it in the area of the Corona (71) Expressway and the westbound 91. The motorist was not hurt.

At 5:30 a.m., a third car was damaged on the westbound 91 near the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway in Anaheim Hills, according to the CHP. No injuries were reported.

[...]

“We are taking each of these incidents seriously and actively searching for those responsible,” CHP Border Division Assistant Chief Donald Goodbrand said. “The public should still feel safe while driving their vehicles on our California freeways.”

CHP Officer Florentino Olivera said that if a vehicle window is shattered, drivers are advised to pull over as soon as it is safe and call 911.

[...]

Two other suspected acts of violence happened just before 7 a.m. Thursday on the westbound 91 near Norwalk Boulevard, and Wednesday night on the 91 in Cerritos.

On May 10, windows on two vehicles traveling along the eastbound 91 in Corona during the predawn hours were blasted by pellet or BB gun fire. Two motorists reported shattered windows while driving on the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Seal Beach area on April 27.

Anyone with information about the shootings was asked to call the CHP Border Division Investigative Services Unit at 714-288-6336.

BB gun freeway shooting impacting small business owner (spectrumnews1.com)
It feels like one setback after another for FG who is the owner of Star-Dust Tours, a Montebello bus charter company.

[...]

He had resumed business after being closed for a year due to the pandemic when a BB gun shooter on Interstate 105 near Bellflower targeted his bus.

Seventeen people were on-board the double decker, a group of students from Verbum Dei High School, their coach and one of Gonzalez’s drivers.

[...]

The bus was struck three times, one shot right after another.

[...]

It is more than a dangerous inconvenience for Gonzalez, who questioned whether he could even reopen after the hit his business took with the COVID-19 shutdowns. His company has been open since 1994, but he said it is hanging on by a thread.

[...]

“We drained our savings. We have to rent the lot, just to survive. So, all our buses are gone. We are selling what we can. Just hoping to stay open another year,” Gonzalez said in tears.

[...]

“I can’t fix the bus, I don’t have the money, so all we can do is let it sit here,” Gonzalez said.

He is just grateful no one was hurt.

[...]

“If you’re seeing this, please just stop," Gonzalez said. "Because you are going to hurt someone eventually. If you’re not hurting them financially already, you’re going to hurt them physically."

This is near us. We travel the 91 fwy all the time. People are frightened. Also the 91 fwy gets jammed up often and the side roads do too. These are very busy areas. I keep trying to figure out where the shooters are shooting from. Is there a common denominator?

Oh wow, I didn't realize this was in your area.

The only clue I've seen so far is this:

White vehicles have been spotted in each of the attacks, but no specific descriptions of the cars or suspects have been provided.

And, that's not much is it? :( Stay safe, kkdj!

We in the area have been wondering if they're shooting from overpasses. Otherwise we can't figure out from where without being noticed.

Is this done with a pellet gun? They can be pumped up to be pretty strong and go further than a bb.

91 Freeway pellet gun shootings unnerve drivers - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)

We do believe it is coming from a moving vehicle,” Goodbrand said Thursday. “At this point, we are still determining if this is an individual or multiple individuals. We have shootings in the morning and afternoon.”

In fact, the rear window of a CHP patrol car was shattered after being struck May 14 in Anaheim on the eastbound shoulder of the 91.

[...]

CHP investigators are working with prosecutors, and Riverside County Dist. Atty. Mike Hestrin said he plans to personally review the case — or cases — when CHP investigators have a suspect or suspects in custody.

“The conduct is incredibly dangerous,” Hestrin said. “Shooting at cars traveling at freeway speeds will result in death or someone getting seriously hurt.”

The rear window of Taryn Campbell’s Ford Flex was shot out on the 91 Freeway near Lincoln Avenue in Corona.
[...]

No serious injuries have been reported so far. The shooter or shooters remain a mystery. No specific descriptions of suspects or vehicles involved in the shootings exist. Investigators think the weapon being used is small caliber, such as a BB or pellet gun.

CHP Officer Dan Olivas of the Inland Empire Division said the agency has dealt with such shootings with BB and pellet guns but not with such high frequency or with so many hot spots.

Rumors on social media are rife, including that white cars are the ones being targeted. CHP investigators say that’s not true: “I am not sure if people realize the majority of vehicles on the road are white,” Olivas said.

[...]

Goodbrand, whose CHP unit patrols Orange County, said technology like ShotSpotter would not detect BB guns being fired, so ultimately, public help is likely to yield the best clues in the shootings.

[...]

“We know a lot of people have dash cams, so if you hear there was a shooting during your drive on a freeway, we would appreciate it if you’d review the video for evidence that helps us apprehend who is responsible,” Goodbrand said.

Similar incidents have been reported in Los Angeles County, dating back to April. In Orange County, two motorists reported shattered windows while driving on the 405 Freeway in the Seal Beach area on April 27.
