CA - Boeing 777 from S. Korea Crashes at San Francisco SFO

  • #81
Every time I land at SFO I'm afraid that's what's going to happen. Miraculous that so many people escaped!

It's been a few years, but it always freaked me out landing there at night. The runway lights extend out into the water and it looks like you are going to land in it.

Seems he is saying where the flight attendants were dropped out of the plane farther back and the emergency crews did not respond to them very quickly at all..

Got a link on the Elliot Stone interview? Can't find it. Can find statements about what happened but nothing like that

It was on the tv. It was phone interview. Sorry I don't have a link was listening live. If it's not allowed MODs go ahead and delete the posts...

This is the the interview: (it is taking absolutely forever to load.....) http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/us/2013/07/06/blitzer-interviews-sf-crash-passenger.cnn

Here is a link to some of what he has said:

One of those on the flight, Elliott Stone, told CNN that he thought the plane was approaching "a little high (then came) down a little sharp.

"All of a sudden, boom, the back end just hit and flies up into the air and everyone's head goes up the ceiling," said Stone, who added that he ended up jumping out the plane without using the stairs or an evacuation slide.

Around the 1:05 mark is where he starts talking about once they exited the plane everyone was huddled on one side of the plane and he and his family went around to the other side...

20 mins later a lady comes walking from 500 yards away.. so they went towards her and there was another like 5 bodies 500 yards away nobody had seen. They started calling for an ambulance and he says it took 20 30 mins for them to get there...

Latest update from CNN.com
http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/06/us/california-plane-latest-developments/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

-- Of the 52 people taken to San Francisco General Hospital, five were in critical condition; five were in serious condition and the conditions of the rest weren't immediately available, hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said. Some of the 52 have been released, she said.

-- Of the 291 passengers, 61 are Americans, Asiana Airlines said. It said 77 of the passengers are South Koreans, 141 are Chinese and one is Japanese.

-- During the crash at airport, plane shed its tail and spun before screeching to a stop.

-- Air traffic control audio between the airport's tower and Flight 214 crew members suggested that those on the ground knew there was some sort of problem, promising that "emergency vehicles are responding."

-- Kristina Stapchuck saw the dramatic scene unfold from her seat on a plane on the airport tarmac. Soon after Flight 214 touched down, "it looked like the tires slipped a little bit and it rocked back," she told CNN. Parts of the plane began to break off as it rocked and then began to spin. "It all happened so suddenly," Stapchuck said.

-- South Korean aviation investigators and Asiana Airlines officials will travel to San Francisco, according to the country's Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board.

-- There were a few clouds in the sky around the time of the crash, and temperatures were about 65 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Winds were about 8 miles per hour.

It's a horrible tragedy, but I am still amazed that so many lived.

I just logged into WS and saw this. First I've heard of it, as it is my day off and I don't check in with media much.

This is my worst fear. I work in airport communications, and one of my jobs is to answer the red phone known as the "crash phone", and dispatch for just such a scenario. We train every year, with every 3rd year being a live drill. While training does help, I always worry if we will be able to handle something like this in "real life".

I do dispatch for many close calls. The aircraft calls into the tower with a problem, who then contacts me, and I arrange for Airport Rescue Fire Fighters to be there upon landing. Most often it is a burnt out bulb, but you never know, and you must take it seriously.

While I run codes daily (medical, spills, fire alarms, security alarms) this code always makes my adrenaline pump.

All 307 passengers and crew have now been accounted for.

77 Koreans, 141 Chinese, 61 US, 1 Japanese = 291 passengers.

Stanford Hospital has received 45 people, in three waves. Of those 45, thus far 16 have been admitted into the hospital. Of those 16 people, 10 are critical, 3 are life threatening.
No information released regarding male, female, or ages.

All I can say is that I am about to get on an airplane for the first time in my life in about 11 days, and I am FREAKING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, dear Lord. Please let these people be OK, and PLEASE don't let it happen to ME!!!!

You'll be ok! Something like this is very rare. There are thousands of flights a day in the US that go off with out a hitch. I work at a small airport and we have 80+ landings and take offs a day. I believe last year we had 2.5 million people go through our airport and all were fine. (And we've never had a person injured on landing in the 14 years I've worked here!)

Enjoy your trip! You will be fine!

Your apprehension is understandable... here's my tip for flight anxiety: meditation during take-offs and landings. It worked for my first time flying and ever since then I have LOVED traveling by plane.

She said first-responders who arrived at the jet saw a handful of survivors emerging from the bay.

“We did observe some of the passengers coming out of the water. But the plane certainly was not in the water. There was a fire on the plane, so the assumption might be that they went near the water’s edge which is very shallow to maybe douse themselves with water.”

That's an important job, I just want to say good luck. We're all counting on you.

Hey, flying is safer than driving your car to the airport at 5,000 feet.
