CA CA - Bryce Laspisa, 19, Castaic, 30 Aug 2013 - #7

Well I went back yesterday. If the dogs are correct in tracking his scent, he sure did take a trek! And he would have had to cross the lagoon. I still haven't been on the actual dam yet and had a good look below the dam. The north side of the lagoon is so quiet and empty during the day. It's odd. Also there were a bunch of trees that had ropes hanging from and caution signs around them. Pretty creepy. I looked under a few culverts and under some trees and heavy brush, but I think there is still a lot in the area that could be searched. I admit I am pretty skeptical of helicopter searches since my husbands niece went missing. Despite a text message from her saying she would be found on a bottom of a cliff, LE insisted she had left the area, that they had evidence she had checked her VM, and that they had searched with helicopter and by foot and found nothing. 3 days later I went where she said she would be found and she was right there. It's unfathomable to me that they could have been so wrong and missed her. She was right there and there was literally no brush or trees where she went missing like there is at castaic. I just want him to be found. I can't even imagine what it's like for the family to still not know where he is for so long.

I am an occupational therapist that specializes in TBI (traumatic brain injury) and a certified brain injury specialist who works full time with individuals with brain injuries. As much as I know people want to believe that Bryce has sustained a head injury and wandered away, forgetting everything, I have to say that I don't buy this at all. Even patients that are ventilator dependent and emerge from extended comas very rarely experience this type of amnesia. I find it very, very, very difficult to believe that Bryce sustained a head injury that caused memory loss from which he was able to walk away from an accident like this and still be missing. Long-term memories are quite ingrained (as noted by patients with advanced Alzheimer's that are not oriented have memories of the past). I read this forum daily and see this theory over and over---of the hundreds of patients I have treated (at one of the top ten TBI rehabs in the country and post-acute facilities as well as community based rehab) I have had ONE patient that had this type of memory loss and this patient had been in a coma for 2 months and was vent dependent.

Coming from someone who is still suffering from a TBI 6 years ago, I did bring this up before and glad you did again. In order for him to have a brain injury enough to have amnesia the hippocampus must be injured and that type of injury would cause symptoms that would not allow him to walk away.

If others are curious about this and missed it before. Look up the Glasgow coma scale.

I've missed all the publicity on this case. I don't know how that happened. I only heard because sres mentioned Bryce on Bob's thread. I hope the search is successful.

Does anyone know why it says redheads are common in the tags? I thought they only made up about 2 per cent of most populations, compared to around 20 per cent for blondes, for example. I always thought naturally red hair was a good description for public recognition because it's comparitively rare. I think that may have helped people recognize Shameca Johnson in Angeles Nat Forest.

I think it's mentioned because there was a weird misconception in the Linnea Lomax case that blondes were "rare" in Northern CA/Sacramento area, which is far from true. I don't know who added the redhead tag or why, but it'd be my guess that someone was trying to pre-empt a "no redheads live in California" thing. I agree that in general redheads are much rarer than other hair colors. I don't know the Laguna Niguel or Castaic areas but I'd venture a guess redheads are fairly rare in Buttonwillow... maybe not so much in Roseville/Rocklin/Sacramento area. Maybe not common, but not super rare. I have no idea how common it is where he came from... another factor to consider.

That's Brilliant for trying , I think it's a great idea ... I 'm sure what you did was enough to reach some people and helped spread awareness of the Missing, you never know who will see the Information that you are giving and it only takes, that one person, a jog of a memory, that could lead us in the direction for finding a Missing Person.
It all helps.

I would venture a guess that the trees are being marked for pruning. Yes we had really bad winds here last week so there could be damaged branches needing to be removed.

Thinking of all the wonderful volunteer searchers today--the Klaaskids search, and Amanda and crew's Buttonwillow undertaking. I hope everyone will keep safe, and that the searches provide some much-needed answers. Crossing fingers.

tamrabbit, regarding the ropes in the trees...I was wondering if they are remains from every kid's favorite party fun: pinatas. Tree boughs provide the ideal place to hang one from, right? With the added caution tape, the leafless tree does make for a creepy scene right out of a Halloween movie! Thank you to you, too, for searching the area.

I remember you bringing it up, Amanda, and you made some very good points that I thought discounted the possibility of him walking around with amnesia. It is what I like to call the "movie version" of amnesia (kind of how movies always show people in comas for months waking up perfectly fine without residual effects and discharging from the hospital that day.) Wish it were like that. I can also understand his family wanting to believe he is fine with no memory of his life or loved ones instead of the alternatives. Praying for positive results this weekend!

I think it may have been to remind people that, while redheads are more rare, they aren't so rare that any man with red hair around Bryce's age should be called in as a sighting. My son looks remarkably like Bryce with the same color hair and, while I agree that there are less redheads than blondes, brunettes, etc. we have at the very least 12 kids with red hair living within a 3 block radius around us. They aren't as uncommon as people think (though people may not realize it until they have a reason to notice it, such as they have a red haired child, are looking for someone like Bryce with red hair, etc.)

Thank you for the pic and the description. Weird is right!!! Like someone else suggested - pinatas? Were the ropes the right height, and were they in a place that would make sense for a party? As someone else suggested, are they part of the pruning work?

The Find Bryce FB page posted about a possible sighting in Ontario, CA of a homeless looking young adult with red hair spotted with an older homeless looking man. They asked for people in the area to keep their eyes open. There is a homeless young man with red hair who has been spotted around the Corona and Norco areas over the past year+ so he may have moved into the Ontario area (the city of Ontario is only a few miles from Norco.)
