CA - Cain Velasquez, MMA fighter, jailed for attempted murder after child relative molested, 2/28/22

He shot an innocent person. While I am all for child abusers getting what they deserve, if the person who was injured was not the perpetrator, then I can see why the judge is not letting Velasquez out. His rage if unchecked could kill an innocent bystander.

The person he shot wasn’t the same one charged on the assault? That reeks of careless use of a weapon.

no it was his step father. while i know his actions werent right, this never would have happened if 1. a judge didnt disregard a DA and release a child pedator who lived AT A DAYCARE and 2. they had discussed this w the victims family. they didnt even notify them.

Same here and there’s no reason to start picking teams. If the guy went out and shot the wrong person while trying to get justice, then that’s kind of why doing that isn’t legal or civil to begin with isn’t it? Of course it’s sometimes arguable on how well the people who we certify and hire to do that perform but still? And bringing firearms into the situation is exactly the wrong thing to do as well.

excellent read. I don't condone what Velasquez did. But I do understand the rage. Because - bail? House arrest? in the very home the abuser used as his hunting grounds? And yeah, his mom has closed her home daycare. But bail? An Ankle monitor? After his repeated disgusting acts upon children? He just goes home to await whatever light minimal sentence we all know he will likely get?

This is literally a prime example of how two wrongs don't equal a right. But I do get how we got here. In a very visceral way.

Judge considers Velasquez a risk to the community -- but Goularte somehow is not.

many MMA fighters are writing to the court in support. My son goes to AKA and saw Cain and sees Khabib there, also has his #freecain shirt.

This is sticky. I worry about anybody who is that careless with a firearm. As well intended as it may have been, he should be thankful that the victim didn’t die. This is textbook for not enforcing laws ourselves that we think we are right about.

This seems strange since he may be facing a sentence with this guy he is suing as a victim. Who knows what a judge will do with that.

Edit to add that I certainly don’t blame him for suing but just question how smart it is as a legal move.

If he establishes his justification in civil court, a jury might later be more sympathetic to his criminal defense.
