GUILTY CA - Carina Mancera, 26, & Jennabel Anaya, 4, slain, Long Beach, 6 Aug 2016

I agree, it was easier to have people institutionalized, but the majority of those were absolute hell holes, and there was all forms of mistreatment, even resulting in death way too often. Nowadays, people don't get proper help because somebody might violate their rights by hospitalizing them. So, too often innocent people suffer because the sick person is not being treated as needed, or they flat refuse treatment. Kind of like the difference in having six eggs in one hand and half a dozen in the other. Its a no win situation.

Surveillance footage reveals gunman’s movements before, after Long Beach killings
The man accused of gunning down a mother and her 4-year-old daughter on a Long Beach street last summer appears to have planned the attack to some extent, according to court documents obtained by the Press-Telegram.

In a search warrant filed by Long Beach police, detectives describe surveillance video that reportedly shows the gunman stashing a change of clothes and a rolling suitcase in trash cans behind a Mexican restaurant in Long Beach on the evening of Aug. 6.

About 40 minutes later, footage shows him walking to the nearby intersection of Ninth Street and Locust Avenue where he fires shotgun rounds into Jennabel Anaya and her mother, 26-year-old Carina Mancera, according to the warrant.

After the attack, the video shows the killer dashing back to the trash cans where he quickly changes his sweatshirt and loads an item that appears to be the shotgun into the rolling suitcase.

‘I don’t believe these people are actually dead’ says accused killer of 4-year-old and her mother
In an often incoherent rant from the witness stand Friday, the man charged with murdering a mother and her 4-year-old daughter in downtown Long Beach insisted the two victims are still alive and that he's the target of an elaborate setup.

"I don't believe these people are actually dead," said Brandon Colbert Jr., prompting the victims' family members sitting in the courtroom to scoff.

Colbert made the statement during a preliminary hearing where the prosecution outlined the evidence they've gathered against him. The hearing also gave Colbert, who is representing himself, the first opportunity to testify on his own behalf.

In all probability he's trying to play the court for suckers.

This was a cold blooded murder, deliberately planned and executed. Open and shut case, but this is California, where all sorts of crazy things are allowed in courtrooms.

I tend to think that there is some mental incompetence involved. why would he travel across the country and shoot a couple ppl he doesn't know? that's not normal behavior. however, that doesn't mean he should "get off", and he wont. ive said it before.... you don't "get off" on insanity. you are sent to the state hospital which is exactly like prison full of mentally unfit ppl, and they medicate you until you are competent. then they send you back for trial.... if you refuse your meds in county they send you back to the state hospital... repeat x however many times.

The judge has ordered a mental evaluation for the accused killer, who insists that the victims are still alive and the whole thing is an elaborate ruse. Personally, I think he's playing with the court and having a good time. This is just a cold-blooded, deliberate murder of two random victims for the hell of it, by a man completely in control of his faculties. The motive is incomprehensible, as evil often is. JMO.

Colbert collapsed in the courtroom moments after hearing that the D.A. will not seek the death penalty against him. He was taken by paramedics to a hospital for treatment, then returned to jail.

The judge has expressed an opinion that he might not be competent to stand trial. My prediction is this thing will drag out for years before a resolution. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes five to seven years before a final verdict. This is California, and the court system is completely broken.

unless he refuses his meds again.

Yep. He's not only refusing his medications, but also refusing to eat. The judge is considering whether to force feed him.

This guy is playing the court like a violin. Pure, deliberate evil. There's no way they should allow him to represent himself. Right now they've isolated him and removed him from access to the jail's law library. I can just imagine that becoming an issue on an eventual appeal.

What a travesty.

Brandon Colbert's trial has begun, with emotional testimony from Jennabel's father.

Colbert is representing himself, and is asking absurd questions during cross-examination. He also has refused to shower in jail for quite some time, so air fresheners have been placed in the courtroom for the trial.

The sooner this man is convicted and put away, the better. Just my opinion.

Colbert was tackled by deputies and thrown to the floor this morning as he tried to leave the courtroom during his sentencing hearing. He refused to sit in his seat and listen to the victims' families describe their pain and suffering at the loss of Carina and Jennebel.

It is unclear if the hearing will continue this afternoon.

The sooner this man is put away and never heard from again, the better.

Two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, plus another life term for the attempted murder of Luis Anaya, plus 75 years to life for the intentional discharge of a firearm. He was strapped to a gurney after the earlier outburst.

Colbert smirked and laughed during the sentencing. He will spend the rest of his life in a prison cell. Justice done. Good judge, prosecutor, and jury.
