I heard reported (NBC Los Angeles) that LE dropped smoke canisters in order for their people to reach downed officers, obscure target from gunman.

Her father was one of his targets. Her fiance was also a cop.
Targets families were targets.
I am not rationalize his behavior, I'm pointing out that he didn't shoot the cabin owners who called the cops on him!
He isn't just shooting anyone who gets in his way. That is a good sign, to me.

Well, unless that person who gets in his way is a cop. Cops are humans too.

From my understanding of news reports, LE threw out smoke canisters to provide a visual for the rescue copter.

Also, the two officers who were allegedly hit, have been air lifted to a nearby hospital. No news on their condition, but I will hope/pray, they make it.

That's my point.
Many were worried he'd just kill anyone he came in contact with... and he isn't doing that.
Only the cops. I think that is an important detail as far as his "thought process."
