Thanks, Tricia! :)

I just wanted to give a more detailed timeline of Diane's disappearance because it is kind of confusing in this thread. So I'll start at the beginning.

Diane had gotten into an argument with her mother earlier in the day. It wasn't anything major, just a run of the mill teenage-mom argument. She had a female friend over at the time, and when the argument ensued, Diane's mother asked her to leave, and she did. Diane told her friend she would call her later.

Ted was at the house as well, hanging out with Diane's brother Dean, but I do not believe he witnessed the argument. Diane did tell both of them that she was going to run away for a couple days.

About 30 minutes later, Diane's mother left for work. She worked a night job. Diane's mother's boyfriend was still in the house. He heard Diane go into her bedroom for about 10-15 minutes, then come out and exit through the garage without saying anything to him.

Before Diane left, she did in fact contact her female friend who had been there earlier. She told her she was going to the mountains for a few days, and that she had someone to stay with there. She said she would call her soon. That was the last her friend heard from her.

There was a guy named Doug whose parents lived on the same street as the Dye family. Doug did not live there but he visited on occasion, and that's how he met Dean and Diane. He was 17-18 (Diane was 13) and had a criminal background, so Diane was forbidden to associate with him. Many say she had a crush on him and he had a thing for young girls also.

Around the time of Diane's disappearance, Doug lived in the Coyote (mountains) area between San Jose and Morgan Hill, CA. He was staying with his probation officer, presumably because his parents would not let him live with them and the probation officer was responsible for keeping track of him.

Dean and Ted went to the Coyote area with Doug once, to an abandoned or vacant house that was being used as a party spot. Several of Doug's friends were there, and Dean and Ted left when they witnessed stashes of weapons and overheard things about planned criminal activities. Neither Ted nor Dean remembers exactly where this location was, but Ted can describe what it looked like.

Diane went missing on 7/30/79.

Sometime between 7/18-7/23, a house in the Coyote area was burglarized. Doug's probation officer/foster father had gone out of town for a few days, leaving Doug at his house alone. When he returned from his trip on 7/25, he found the stolen items in a crawl space in his house. This included guns, fishing equipment, and a stereo or boom box. He reported Doug to the police on 7/25.

It is unclear whether he was arrested for this before or after Diane went missing. I am still trying to pinpoint an exact arrest date. He was charged with the burglary on 8/13 so I know he was arrested somewhere between 7/25 and 8/13. He was not released until November, 4 months after Diane went missing.

If he had already been arrested when Diane went missing, it's very likely that she would not have known that and still attempted to go see him. She would have needed a ride if that was where she was going, and there is no evidence that she'd been there before so it would have had to be someone who knew how to get there. It would not have been Dean or Ted since they were adamant that she stay away from him.

Doug was arrested and released several times in 1980 and 1981, mostly for auto theft. It does not appear that Diane was with him any of these times.

In 1983, Doug was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. He is still in prison today. He killed a man because he wouldn't let Doug use his car. This man, like his probation officer had in the past, had given him a place to stay after one of his jail stays because he had no place else to go.

I want to note again that San Jose Police didn't really do an investigation when Diane went missing. Runaways were not taken very seriously. They just took a report and ran a small snippet in the newspaper. It wasn't until New Jersey authorities found the remains of Princess Doe and thought she resembled Diane, that the NJ police came and did an excellent investigation, though unfortunately several years after she disappeared.

They did talk to Doug (he was already in prison by this time) and he said that he had canvassed the neighborhood when he found out she was missing, and that he'd gone to the school and talked to the principal. The principal said this never happened. (I do not know exactly when he is saying he went to the school, but Diane went missing in July so the school was closed for summer and there was nobody there). He told one of Diane's relatives that he saw her in Washington State when he happened to pick her up hitchhiking, and that she'd had a baby. He also said to police that he wanted to 'get' whoever murdered her. He had not been told about Princess Doe or that she had been murdered, just that she was missing. (Though it's possible he'd seen it on the news from prison)

There were quite a few 'sightings' of Diane, some were considered credible, others not so much.

There have been mentions earlier in this thread of Diane being sighted working in Atlantic City and as a prostitute in New York. Both of these were reported as sightings of Princess Doe, who at the time was believed to be Diane. The people who reported these sightings lived on the East Coast and had seen images on TV, they did not know Diane. I do not consider these credible.

There was a sighting of Diane a few days after she ran away, with two neighborhood girls about her age, on Felder Drive in San Jose. The identity of the two girls is unknown. The person who saw her here lived on her street and knew Diane and her family. This was reported to SJPD right away, but from what I can tell, it was not followed up on.

There was another sighting of her in a beat up car with two older girls pulling into a McDonalds on Cottle Road. This witness was a school friend of Diane's and did not report it because since she was seeing Diane behaving normally in the neighborhood, she assumed that Diane had already been home and was no longer missing. This person did come forward during the Princess Doe investigation though.

Another schoolmate claimed to have seen Diane in December 1981 at the Serramonte Mall in Daly City, CA. She was reportedly alone and appeared to be well-nourished and cared for. This is the only person who claims to have spoken to her where she reportedly said she did not want to go home. I am not sure if this sighting is credible.

I am waiting now on another attempt to find out exactly when Doug was arrested to see if he can be ruled out of any involvement.

  • #85
The following now is just my opinion:

I believe Doug was involved in some way. Possibly steering her into prostitution, drugs, crime. Possibly harming her because she witnessed things and he was worried she'd talk. Possibly was with her until his arrest, at which point she was left with his unsavory friends.

I just think there's some link there. It would fit with both the mountains and the sightings in Diane's neighborhood because Doug lived in the mountains and his parents were on Diane's street. I'm thinking it's possible that he was bringing her back and forth but she was hanging out elsewhere in the neighborhood while he visited his parents. Until he got arrested, anyway... then ???

Lots of possibilities.

Lavendermoon, I wanted to thank you again so much for bringing that to us and if it turns out that Doug couldn't be involved, I'd want to look into it more. I hope you'll continue to stick around and see what, if anything, ever develops.

Thank you for such kind words. About the pot smoking- We knew we should not have given into her. Patricia trusted us to keep her away from it. She told us if she asks tell her no. And if she found out we had given her any weed she was going to "tan both your hides". But you know what. We felt it was kind of silly for her to demand that of us while she openly allowed Dean to grow weed in the back yard. Yep that's right. He had several plants in plain view growing right there. She knew about it and simply let him do it. I'll be the first to admit she wasn't the most responsible mother, but we knew better and we let her do it anyway. Patricia was never home, and when she was she was with her boyfriend. She worked long hours at Almaden Vineyards, and then would show up once in awhile with groceries, give us some chores to do, get dressed then leave. Sometimes she'd sleep, then leave. We wouldn't see her again for days. I think that is why Diane ran away. No parental supervision after they moved out of the apartment and into the house. I know Patricia was a good woman, I liked her a lot, but I think she made the mistake of spending what little free time she had at her BF's house and hardly any with her children. I did not reside with them when they lived in the apartment. But I spent all my time there. She was home more often then. Once she got their father's house, all the sudden everything changed. I shouldn't really be talking like this. But sometimes though I don't think anyone blames her parents, it ultimately was Patricia never being home that seemed to hurt Diane. But then she could have called her dad and asked him if she could stay with him. I dunno maybe she did and I never knew. Anyway I'm sure Pat blamed her self for many years afterward. I loved her, she was a very kind woman and I am not speaking at all negative about her. Not pointing fingers, but I just think she should have been home more. Diane would never have run away had she been.

I don't know if Odyssey told you already, but the girl in the image is not Diane. I am certain. But thank you so much for caring and for bringing this to our attention. Because you simply never know. It could have easily been Diane. But then I am wondering who the girl in the image is. Some other girl who was kidnapped and brainwashed maybe? Is it possible she has loved ones who have spent decades trying to find her? Maybe we may never know what happened to Diane, but maybe we can help identify the girl in the image and maybe if she is missing help her surviving loved ones reconnect with her?

My step dad was a horrible human being. He was also a minister in the Church of Scientology. He was a hateful robot, who had no emotion and would not even allow me to get sick. If I was sick he'd tell me I was pretending and make me get out of bed no matter how sick I was and work outside. One time I remember him doing this when I had food poisoning. Made me shovel white rocks into the back of a flatbed at some quarry. When I got home he made me sit at the dinner table and eat. I was sweating heavily and felt like I was going to pass out. I vomited in my plate then passed out. I was sick for a week after that, so weak I could not get out of bed. My mother stood up to him and I got to heal. That is one example. He was a horrible man. My mother was a wonderful person, but she had no power when it came to him. She simply could not protect me most of the time from him. So of course I was more than happy to live with Dean and Diane. No stress, total freedom, we could do what ever we wanted. I was very happy being there. Plus Dean was my best friend, and still is to this very day.

And what about your story? Would you be willing to share more about what happened to you and of your captors?
Despite being treated in such an abhorrent way,you seem to have remained a good, compassionate person. My captors? I doubt they have souls.

I gave that necklace to her. She made a friendship bracelet for me in return. I wore it permanently after she ran away until it wasted away and fell off in 1986. She did smoke pot with us sometimes, but for the most part we would not let her partake with us except once in awhile. We were very foolish to have let her do it at all. But hey we were about 16 years old. We were still stupid kids too. I had the impression she did not like weed that much. Sometimes though she just seemed to like the whole stoner look, bell bottom jeans. She had brown cords that were bell bottoms she wore all the time. I can hardly remember her wearing regular jeans for that matter

Hi Ted; I'm a year older then Diane. Times were way different back then! I was taking liquor from my parents as a tween; lots of tween/ teens drank; smoked pot & cigarettes. My "mother" used to buy beer for my "sister" when she was 15-16. I have not spoken to any of them since my dads death in 06.

Thanks, Tricia! :)

Glad to see activity since the last time I looked! I wonder if you can find someone that can tell you if the schoolmate that saw Diane in 1981 knew Doug.

Rose, I do not think this person knew Doug, but I am not sure. I have not yet spoken to this person myself.

I'm glad to see you here, btw! :)

I have a question you might be able to answer. Do you think there's ANY chance whatsoever that Diane could be one of the Mendocino Does? I know you're involved in that.

There is some resemblance (especially to the old recon) and everything seems to fit except the date. The Does were either found on 7/8/79 or 7/10/79 depending on what source you read with an estimated interval at 7 months, placing date of death in Dec 1978, and Diane didn't go missing until 7/30/79.

But that whole thing was so screwed up so I kind of have my doubts if that information is even correct.

Link to thread on Mendocino Does: http://www.websleuths.com/forums/sh...-WhtFem-s-(111UMCA-amp-131UFCA)-Teens-July-79

For those who are not familiar the the Mendocino Does, they are two teens that were found in a wooded area in Willits, in Mendocino County. For the longest time LE was saying they were a boy and girl but recently dropped the bombshell that it was actually two girls. They also said the DNA was insufficient for a sample while saying that the two teens had been ruled out as being related to each other through DNA.

One thing that is bugging me about this is that one of the times Doug was arrested in 1980, he was picked up in Redwood Valley, north of Ukiah in Mendocino County. Ukiah is not far from Willits, it's about 22 miles. So he may have had ties to that area.

I'm surprised I never posted on her thread. I believe my team turned her in as a potential to Cali.

The Mendocino teens were exhumed in 2012; I'm not sure if they reburied them; my guess is they did not. I also assume that they did get some sort of DNA from them in order to tell they were both female. It doesn't make sense otherwise. They're both believed to have been killed months before because there was no flesh on them. They were found before Diane went missing. Their info is below if anyone wants to look them up. Carl made recons for Still Seek Answers & I for our FB page Never Forget Me. We have an album to feature them.

Identifying murdered teenagers in 33-year-old cold case

NamUs UP # 10447 - found 7/8/79 - always known as female (bird earring) - Probable year of death 1978 to 1979 - DNA Status: Complete - Insufficient DNA for profiling

NamUs UP # 10450 - found 7/8/79 - now known as female - Probable year of death 1978 - DNA Status: Complete - Insufficient DNA for profiling

Thanks, Rose. I knew it was a long shot and that the dates would have to be off by about 6 months, but it's happened before (Heidi Balch is an example).

I also thought I recalled that they didn't think the two girls were placed there at the same time, so I thought there might have been some other little detail I'd forgotten that could have linked this.

I do know for certain that Diane's missing date is correct.

You've sure done your home work. I was actually there in the house that night and you know more than I did. I didn't know her mom's boyfriend was there that night. Or I forgot he was. I was sleeping in the family room. Late afternoon through part of the early evening. That room was right inside the front door. I remember waking at one point and sort of looking up and seeing Patricia leave. I was quite high at the time. I don't remember her boyfriend being there at all, but that does not mean he wasn't, I just happened to hear something, wake up and see their mother walking out the door. I went back to sleep. Now some info suggests that Diane left before that. If she did I was not aware of it, but if so she did come back. Some time around 10pm I think or slightly after I heard sobbing and that woke me up again. I could not tell where it was coming from. I went past the kitchen toward the hallways where the bedrooms were. By that time I could tell the crying was coming fro behind me and drifting away. I noticed all the bedroom doors were open and no one seemed to be home. Dean was there when I went to sleep, so I had no idea where he was. When I went back toward where I heard the crying I noticed it sounded like it was coming from the front porch. I opened the door and Diane was sitting on the porch crying. She seemed startled. She had not seen me sleeping in the living room and she thought no one was there.

That is when she told me she was going to run away. I spent an hour trying to talk her out of it and she seemed finally to agree to think on it for a few days. I thought she was just being a silly teenager, but she seemed seriously enough that I took it pretty serious just in case. I thought if she did she was just going to go to stay at a girlfriends house for a few days anyway "to scare her parents" like she said. But she seemed very upset at the same time. I decided to go home because for one thing I felt like she kept trying to give me little signs she wanted to be left alone, and also I had not been there in days, and I wanted to go and gather up more food and supplies. After walking in that direction for a good 15 minutes I began to think maybe I should turn back and make sure she doesn't do something stupid, make sure she is ok. Then thought. 'Pfft, she's just acting like a child, she's not going to run away" or something like that, so I continued on home.

So I was the last person there with her that night. Once I was gone she was free to pack all the things she wanted and split. Which is why I kept getting the feeling she wanted to be left alone. She kept hinting to me she wanted me to give her some space. She hugged me, kissed me on the cheek, thanked me for caring, and said she promised she would not run away, and I left. That was the last time I ever saw her. I would have given anything if I had thought twice and gone back that night. But what good would that have done. She was going to run away no matter if it was that night or another I suppose. I know some of your know this information, but wanted to add it in.

Who Diane saw after I left is a mystery. Why do I get the feeling it was Doug Young? I mean like has been stated his parents lived right next door. Diane was all alone, and this was his golden opportunity NO?

This is creepy. Because Jane Doe#2 looks a good deal like Diane. Thank you for sharing this information.

Are they sure of the dates these two missing teens would died? I mean how can they be certain? What if the dates are off a bit? On the other hand if that be the case then all these sightings of Diane were just someone that looked like Diane? Well maybe, but in all these years I can't recall ever encountering a another person who looked like her. Diane had a really irregular kind of face. I know it doesn't really show in the few pics that are on the net, but still I wonder. Jane Doe #2 does look quite a bit like Diane really did

"Hi Ted; I'm a year older then Diane. Times were way different back then! I was taking liquor from my parents as a tween; lots of tween/ teens drank; smoked pot & cigarettes. My "mother" used to buy beer for my "sister" when she was 15-16. I have not spoken to any of them since my dads death in 06."

Hi- It was a crazy time back then. In south San Jose it seemed like everyone our age was partying. It was a great time to grow up. I wasn't much of a drinker my self. I just loved weed and other naughty substances, all of which all these years later I wouldn't dare touch. My mom had a friend at work when she was working a Key Chevrolet in Cupertino, who would give her grocery bags of weed to bring home to me. Home grown, but it was pretty primo. Were talking pounds of the stuff for $20 a bag. So my mom was pretty liberal too. She smoked it now and then too. Odd for an upper middle class Florence Henderson type to be like that, but that was my mom

:shame:

O Despite the abhorrent treatment you suffered, you seem to remain a good, compassionate person. I am so sorry for what you have endured. I am willing to share my opinion that my captors have no souls.

Thanks for the very kind words. You know I understand if you don't want to talk about it. Scars left on a person who has been through an ordeal like that. I can't even begin to understand. I am so happy that you also are a person of genuine compassion despite what you have been through. How do I know that? Well you wouldn't be here if you weren't

:great:

Ok, that is interesting. I don't think in all this time we had ever discussed what time it was when you talked to her. I figured it was earlier in the day.

The information I posted is the info that was given by Diane's parents, and since Diane's mother worked at night, it is very possible that her mother and mother's boyfriend did not know she had come back after she left at around 4pm.

And I didn't know that either. Do you think Diane would have gone walking anywhere by herself late at night? Was she wary of that sort of thing or was she the type to think nothing bad would happen to her?

Ok, Ted likes to call me an investigator and I appreciate the compliment but I do need to clarify that I am not a licensed investigator nor am I with LE. I just want to find Diane like everyone else. :)

I don't think kids these days can even imagine how things used to be. Times were way different; drugs in general were safer. Things that people used to do back then can't be done now. CPS would be taking kids away. People used to sell pot in school & smoke it in the print shop dark room. People used to smoke cigarettes in school bathrooms; I don't think kids would get away with lighting one anywhere on school property these days. Heck we used to be able to go to a store to buy cigarettes saying they're for a parent which can't be done now.
