The place for juveniles where Ayres worked in Boston was called the Reception- Detention Center for Boys. It was founded in 1957 and run by John Coughlin, Director of the Division of Youth Services in Boston and Martin Davis of Parole Services of the Parole Board.

On August 30, 1965, the name of the Reception-Detention Center for boys was officially changed to the Judge John J. Connelly Youth Center. This is still in operation and is run by the Department of Youth Services in Boston.

Hmm.. wonder where the records are kept? Gotta be somewhere. Perhaps John Coughlin and Martin Davis are still alive.

I have just learned from someone who taught the boys at the school at Judge Baker in Boston when Ayres was there that the boys were mostly "wealthy connected kids.
They seemed to be from various parts of the country e.g.. California,
Florida, Connecticut, Illinois. Then there were local kids who had very
little or perhaps blue collar
."

My guess is that Ayres molested the boys who had very little or were blue collar at Judge Baker during the week and then molested many, many boys at the Reception Detention Center for Boys where he worked on the weekends.

Great catch by Believe09: It turned out that boys were raped at the juvenile place where Ayres worked in Boston on the weekends - originally known as the Reception- Detention Center for Boys , later known as the Judge John Connelly Youth Services in Roslindale. One boy, Mark Devlin, wrote a memoir about being sexually abused in Boston's juvenile system, including the Roslindale Center. He was born in 1949, and he was in the juvenile halls starting from age 7 all the way through to age 18. So he was at the center when Ayres would have been treating boys. Alas, Devlin died five years ago.

Once I pull myself together, I will link everyone to what I have been digging up....I gotta pick myself up off of the ground.

This appears to be the satellite facility that Ayres spent his weekends at in conjunction with his time at the Judge Baker Guidance Center.

The Reception Center was a Special Diagnostic Clinic established by the Department of Youth Services and staffed by the Department of Mental Health.

The Reception Detention Center for Boys had a name change in 1965 to the Judge John Connolly Youth Center.

This place was hard core. Some of the survivors of the DYS system went on to memorialize their time spent there with heart-rending stories:

A couple of things. Predators are always willing and able. They watch for every single opportunity. It doesn't surprise me that Ayres preyed on the "blue collar" boys in foster care as well as some wealthier boys. It wouldn't shock me to learn that other doctors took their sons to Ayres. Remember, early on we learned that doctors and even state police took their babies to Dr. Bradley. I hate to always come around to Art Silverman (although, he did live down the block from me) but he molested boys at his practice and then molested far more well-off boys (children of this friends and his son's friends) at his house where he hosted them with pool parties.

On another note, I heard from the NC Medical Board regarding the complaint I filed against Mel Levine. They are looking into it and will send me their comments and decision in writing some time in the next 6 months, but they want me to know they are taking me seriously...lol

On--I noticed you used the word sympathy. I doubt that there's a single WS poster/reader who is not humbled by your strength, pragmatism, and dedication to moving forward.

One of my favorite sayings is "Sympathy says, 'I'm sorry'. Compassion, says 'How can I help?'. We sympathize for the hurt boy who struggled with a horrible secret but we are compassionate with the man.....the survivor....who is now speaking out.

I do recognize the siren call. My young sons don't hear the call in pylons as they don't drive but they do hear them in knives. Thank God, they share their pain with us and are willing to accept help. I've never felt more necessary on this earth than after a 3 am call from a young man who just "needed to talk".

I just want to tell you again how much hope you give me as the mother of six young men who are also striving towards surviving.

I got a note from the North Carolina Medical Board today too about Levine. But meanwhile, because of complaints, Levine has yanked those bogus phantom appearances off of his website. Apparently the agency that used to be his booker contacted him and told them to take them off.

Perhaps Ayres got word from the underground pedophile network in Boston that the Reception-Detention Center was the place to be for pedophiles.

I think there is something under all of this....this is too much-I mean statistically speaking. Rife, Levine, Ayres-same breeding ground so to speak. Judge Baker is affiliated with facilities that are rife with throwaway kids who are brutalized....Boston is a hotbed for priest sex abuse....help me out here, cause I am not all that smart...this feels like a confluence of events.

I am certain that Rife, Levine, Ayres knew each other in Boston, as well as Harvard-trained child psychiatrist Dr. Alan Horowitz, featured on "America's Most Wanted" after fleeing the country while out on bail after being charged with raping young boys.

I think they all exchange material.

A child psychiatrist who was at Judge Baker told me a janitor there discovered a shrink showing a 🤬🤬🤬🤬 movie to a young boy. He didn't know if it was Rife or one of the several other shrinks there who were busted for molesting kids. These were guys in addition to Ayres.

I do think that most of the staff at Judge Baker is well intentioned, but there are at least six shrinks who were trained there who were caught molesting boys later on at other places.

Thanks for your kind comments in the last couple of days.
Believe09 and Missizzy: I sure wish I could FEEL the confidence, hope, peace etc that you're talking about. I keep reading stuff about how when guys who have gone through this hit about 60ish, it gets more mellow. Maybe I'll get there early... I hope so anyway, otherwise I'll just have to try to be patient.

It's disturbing how many of us all have the SAME struggles... It's like the brain is prewired to react badly for a long time to this stuff. Kind of ticks me off...

Creepy stuff you guys are finding on the Reception-Detention Center. I've always had a bit of trouble keeping all of the facts about the ayres case straight in my head (I'm referring to trial dates, arrest dates, employment dates and places, other doctors in practice with ayres etc..., NOT my OWN details.) These posts about the Reception-Detention center have caused me to have a bit of a revelation:

Reading stuff about OTHERS who may have suffered at ayres hands is a bit like looking directly at the sun... very hard to do - painful and damaging. I read the stuff, and it slips right out of my brain immediately. Ten minutes ago I looked at a list of doctors from the same place/era as ayres and right now the only detail I can recall is that it's a fairly long disgusting list. I can't even remember the name of the facility without looking. Makes me realize that I haven't backed up my computer's hard drive recently.

Anyway.. good work, everyone, on opening the new can of worms. :)

How can we get this thread moved back into "Crimes in the News?" I wrote to the moderators but got no response.

The mod I emailed is out of the office until this evening-I will try another...

I just received an email from Richard B. Johnson, author of "Abominable Firebug" , a memoir about his days in the Boston juvenile justice system.

He confirmed that he and other boys were raped by staff at the Reception Detention Center in Roslindale - a place where Dr. William Ayres chose to work on the weekends in the early 1960s. Johnson describes the Center as "hell on earth" and credits a Reverend Robert Brown for helping to draw attention to the abuses of boys there. Johnson says that's why they changed the name to the John C. Connelly Center- as a way to erase the Reception -Detention Center's sordid history.

OK. Gobsmacked, I am, but we knew that we would see some tie like this didnt we....

I wonder if Mr. Johnson was ever seen at the Guidance center or Children's? I mean, I wonder if he has his own records???
