CA CA - Elizabeth 'Beth' Funchess, 6 mos, San Jose, 9 Sept 1977

  • #141
I received a notification due to making this post in this thread previously and re-reading the article I posted from 1978 above, I can see there was a psychic named Phoebe Getchell who said she envisioned a red Camaro with California licence plates with Diane and Beth as passengers and a man driving.

Looking through a newspaper archives though in an earlier article from the October 19, 1977 Waxahachie Daily Light newspaper, a psychic named as Phoebe Getchler (slightly different from the other article but clearly the same person), says she envisions a ring of kidnappers driving a Grey Chevrolet.

As rosesfromangels said above, the psychics did add some attention to the case but clearly Getchell or Getchler was just adding to the circus atmosphere with these different visions. I wonder if she was paid by Diane's parents who were obviously reaching for anything for a lead in the case.

I've attached the 1977 article here, hope you can click it and zoom in OK.
The crackpots def. came out of the woodwork, as I recall. From the subsequent, occasional news stories, I remember Diane’s parents were so desperate for answers. I will never forget the image on the news of her father standing where her remains were found. It was profoundly sad. Obviously it had an impact on me, as it will soon be 43 years, and I haven’t forgotten Diane or her baby Beth.

I also read articles about the psychics, and it stated that Phoebe Getchler was hired by the grandparents but refused payment, repeatedly.

This is all such a long time ago, and I was in the periphery absorbing all this with the eyes of a young and naive teenager, so calibrate my remarks with that in mind.

As I mentioned upthread, my boyfriend and I drove around with her husband hanging posters, listening to him talk.

Do you remember, you personally, if the baby had a birthmark? It looks like in some of the photos there is a birthmark on the head, but with the lighting and such it's hard to tell. Perhaps that would help to find her.

IDK; never heard mention of it.

Thanks for bumping this up DragonSpeaker. "Baby" Beth would now be 43 years old. Our best hope is that she does her DNA through one of the popular sites and starts finding a bunch of first cousins by the name of Funchess or Crooke and starts investigating.

Someone in this thread mentioned that when Beth finds out, she should get a lawyer. Wondering myself, what kind of lawyer? Doubt she'd know either, so let's put the info here for her.

Why would she want a lawyer, and how do you *find* a lawyer for something like this? "Proving identity" is not a section I've seen under "Attorneys". Please, everyone, jump in- the more info we can have lined up for her for when she's found, the better.

Hey rosesfromangels, would really like your input on my query above.

If she finds her way here, the first place I’d recommend she go is the Detective assigned to her/her mother’s case.

There was a 7 month old baby found murdered in Santa Cruz County 1981. I haven't been able to find any info or reports about this aside from mention in a list of unsolved slayings in the county. I am unsure how long the child was deceased when the body was found. Could this be Elizabeth Funchess?

No - she would have been four at the time, close to 5.

What was the date on this article please?
9/12/79. The attack happened on 9/11/79. If you are familiar with the Golden State Killer Cop case then you likely know why this date is significant. I believe Joe DeAngelo is responsible for this as well as the Funchess and Clearihue murders.

Yes, but the remains of a 7 month old infant were found in 1981. The question is when was the infant killed. We need to determine whether the remains were skeletal and the infant was killed a few years prior.

What a blight on society that loser is. Too bad California doesn't have the death penalty. While he certainly could be responsible for Diane's murder (he was prolific), I don't think he was. During that specific time frame, his "hunting grounds" seemed to be the Sacramento area. Further, from what I understand of his "signature", it doesn't align with what I remember of Diane's case.

Thank you so much for posting and keeping this thread fresh. Even after all these years, I am absolutely convinced we will find Beth some day, and that will start the trail back to her Mom's killer.

Sorry - misunderstood. Close enough - Beth was 6 mos. old when she went missing 9/6/77. Her birthday was 2/26/77 and she was 2'0" and 15 lbs. Light brown hair and blue/gray eyes.

o.k. now you've got me excited about this. I am going to dig and see if I can find anything on this, and please do the same. I have never heard this before, which is odd.

Let's say she did that. What would happen next?
To put it another way, what's to be expected once that first call sets things in motion? How long for the police to do what they do? How long until Beth is reunited with her family?

Doubtful, imo. They had both Ken and Diane's DNA on file, surely would have checked.
