It may have been a shot gun wedding. There really is no discussion on this, they ARE married based on everything we know about the military.
That's what I thought too. I was confused and questioning why it was even being brought up.

This is a really interesting thought!
Under California law, it looks like the one being testified AGAINST holds the privilege, so I take that to mean that if they are still married, CL can request that NL NOT testify. Perhaps LE is working with NL on a "deal" after all?
"Under this section, a married person in California may not be called as a witness in a case in which his or her spouse is a party, unless there is express consent from the spouse holding the privilege. The person that holds the privilege is the person the testimony is going to be used against (not the person who is testifying)."

If EC was between 5 weeks and 12 weeks pregnant, her "baby" would have be between the size of a sesame seed and a plum. If it was the size of a sesame seed, I can see why they are having trouble finding out if she was pregnant and who the father was after 7 weeks in a mine shaft.

I don't believe they physically look for a baby in a scenario like this (an early pregnancy, decomp), I'm guessing they'll be running tests to find out instead. This is moo, I'm not a doctor, csi, coroner, etc.
Wow, that's just strange IMO. But thank you for posting the info!
I doubt they were forced to get married. No, there hasn't been much discussion. Do you have any real proof that the army knows they're married, or is that speculation? An application, or even a license-to-wed, isn't much in the way of proof of a wedding though. Those could just have been obtained to appease their families.
The Army would have no proof, however, the USMC would have the proof. They would not have been allowed to live in base housing if they weren't legally married. I've looked on line for their actual marriage license and it isn't a matter of public record in most states.
I'm not sure why the validity of their marriage is even being questioned. Unless we find out something to the contrary I think we're safe in assuming they are, in fact, legally married.
Don't know if this has been posted

"These mines did not kill anyone. It's just a hole in the ground, that's it," Billings said.
I am no expert on this but a test might confirm she was pregnant. But to find out how many weeks pregnant you would have to measure the size of the embryo, no? And if the embryo is the size of a sesame seed, after 7 weeks in a mine shaft that measurement could be difficult IMO.

Because if they aren't legally married, then she could testify to her hearts content about everything she knows. Without proof of the ceremony, with witnesses, they're not married, and there's no spousal privilege. We have no idea what agreement they had with the army in terms of their living arrangements, so it's safest to assume we don't know their marital status by base housing alone.
If they can tell she was pregnant via some chemical or enzyme AND a doctor verified the pregnancy with a due date, they may be able to proceed, jmo.
Thanks for this. Just when I'm appalled at people like Chris I come across amazing individuals like Doug Billings and the rest of the team. Amazing, amazing, amazing!!! I think it took a great deal of compassion and pure grit to do what they did. I am in awe of them...more than words can say!
Maybe not married, Army
I'm confused am I on the right thread!!!!
I think so Meemaw12... if not you and I are lost in the same alternate universe!
