This pic STILL bothers me, it feels hastily captured imho

Agreed, but I can’t quite put my finger on where the dissonance (for me) is coming from. The upward angle may be part of it?

The black thing in his hand bothers me because it seems too chunky for a phone and has what appear to be largish pad/contact points at the end. I dunno, maybe I’ve stared at, manipulated, folded and spindled it for too long.

Fang Jin was staying for approximately two-and-a-half to three months, so I don't think that in July there was already a concern about time constraints on her schedule and visit.

I do wonder why the friend was so concerned
maybe they usually talked or texted and he was getting no responses?

He isn't even posing, he is clearly in motion...
Standing on uneven ground not even steady by the looks of things
Why this pic????
ETA: dunno. just thinking out loud.
If JRF were in motion there would probably be some degree of motion blur, but there isn't. He definitely seems to be standing still.

I'd guess he was following JF down the hill and she turned around and asked him to stop for a second so she could take a picture. Why she would choose that moment, who knows. But it doesn't look suspicious to me in and of itself.

Tracebility and more camera surveillance proof of his car between 21st of july and 4th of august can lead to location of Fang ... We have a report that someone saw his car on 2nd of August in Morongo basin ...but LE could not find it at that moment ???? If you go for a day hiking in Harper Canyon what kind of shoes will you wear ?????
i have not hiked in 100F type temperatures but the heat can make your feet swell- a lot- like a whole extra shoe size, so not sure what type of shoes Fang had with her. The ground would be hot during the day too- so if your feet were not covered, they could be burned. Not sure if people actually hike at night there to take advantage of cooler temps.

in the other pictures we see, she always took both of them together so this is different

I feel the same way you do about the picture.

It looks like a phone to me in a heavy case like maybe an Otter Box? I use one of those and so does my spouse so it sticks out to me because the Otter Box makes our phone appear larger/more bulky.

JF's phone hasn't been found, so presumably the photos we have are the photos she sent to her friends and family? It makes sense that she'd mostly send them photos with her in them, but she may have taken many photos of JRF by himself that we don't know about.

It doesn't really appear to be that steep of a hill if you look at the earth he's standing on.

To me, the photo looks like it was taken while she was sitting on the ground.

I also have an OtterBox (on an iPhone 12 Max) - it doesn’t look nearly as ‘thick’ as whatever’s in JRF’s hand. You may be on the right track though - possibly it’s one of those charging cases.

Hopefully someone has better photo editing skills than me (and currently on phone) but this is a strange looking object, zoomed in.

You may be correct. Either way it does appear to be a deliberately posed photo.

Something about the way JRF is standing makes me wonder if he had bad knees. Probably not relevant unless bad knees helped cause some kind of accident.

I think it looks like a fairly standard phone in a case. I'd guess it's about half an inch thick.

There IS such a thing as a cell phone stun gun, not that that's necessarily what JRF is holding here.

Of course, but those stun guns still look like a normal phone. I was responding to the comment about JRF's phone looking strange and chunky. The original small image made it look chunkier than it appears to be when zoomed in.

I thought it looked even stranger and chunkier when I zoomed in. :)

Like, what’s that flange looking thing at the end? What are the bright spots? It definitely looks wider than .5 inch to me. I even took a ruler and measured half an inch between my thumb and forefinger. Look at his hand (which I assume is larger than mine) - his thumb and fingers are 2-3 inches apart.

To use my iphone as an exampe, it has an un-cased depth of .29 inches. With the Otterbox, it’s 1.3. (Numbers from Apple and Otterbox.). It’s also squarish, and doesn’t fit into my cupped hand the way John’s device does. I do have a handheld ham radio which has a similar thick look in my hand (JRF does not appear to have a ham radio license, just checked).

Ah, well, I’m blind in one eye and can’t see out the other, as my grandfather used to say, so I don’t have too much invested in this other than thinking it doesn’t look very phone-ish. But different phones and cases can definitely change the look, and I’ve only got one to compare it to.

I've outlined the phone in red. I think the "bright spots" are either reflections on the glass screen or possibly the camera lens bumps on the back of the phone:

I agree entirely, this looks exactly like my mom's Otterbox case with an older model iPhone that's a bit chunkier
