GUILTY CA - Father Eric Freed, murdered in church rectory, Eureka, 1 Jan 2014

  • #21
This is my home town, and I had my HS Baccalaureate in that church.

My parents still live in Eureka. So very, very sad. He was much beloved in the area. So sad and disgusting.

I live in Humboldt County, not southern hum, but I have heard almost nothing about this accused murderer Gary Lee Bullock or his life before the murder. Only old news mostly, about the brutal murder. Yes, I do have a job, so may have missed some news. I wasn't even aware this preliminary hearing had progressed so far. Maybe they don't want to taint the jury pool, but what do people know about him...anybody??

I live in Humboldt County, not southern hum, but I have heard almost nothing about this accused murderer Gary Lee Bullock or his life before the murder. Only old news mostly, about the brutal murder. Yes, I do have a job, so may have missed some news. I wasn't even aware this preliminary hearing had progressed so far. Maybe they don't want to taint the jury pool, but what do people know about him...anybody??

We lived in SoHum for 15 years and we moved away 30 years ago. My husband was Gary's teacher one year in elementary school and our daughter was his classmate through eighth grade. He is in her sixth grade class picture and probably in others, as well as my husband's class picture that year.

My husband remembers that Gary was a very quiet boy, not someone who stood out. He was neither the best nor the worst behaved in the class and was certainly not a child that my husband would have expected to do something like this (and in almost 30 years teaching, he had a few kids that he figured would end up in big trouble). Our daughter recalls that he seemed to have a troubled home life, but that would be rumor.

There are more rumors from locals in the comments section of this article that I don't think has been posted before. Lots to wade through. I believe this article mentioned that he had been a truck driver, but was unemployed. His wife and children have left the area.

http://lostcoastoutpost.com/2014/jan/14/gary-bullock/

Although I know nothing about Gary's family and home life, I do know what it was like in SoHum at the time we lived there. The area was known for very strong marijuana, "Humboldt Homegrown." One day on the main drag of Garberville I saw Harry Reasoner of "60 Minutes" filming a segment about pot growing in the area. At the check stand in the local market in Redway, there were displays of ziplock bags with the Humboldt Homegrown logo and Wiss clips for clipping off the buds.

Quite a few of the parents of my husband's students were growers. After the harvest, some would take their kids out of school for a month vacation in a warm climate, including Tahiti. They would ask my husband for school assignments to take with them. It was common to see low-income locals suddenly acquiring brand new 4WD trucks, which we jokingly referred to as "pot wagons." When our daughter reached Junior highschool, she told us about kids coming to school with wads of cash they had "earned" growing their very own pot plant. As I recall, they could make $1000 from one plant at that time.

There were two pot-related murders just on the road we lived on, and we weren't even in the biggest growing area. A criminal element was traveling to SoHum to rip off growers and violence increased. It wasn't just "hippies" doing the growing. We knew of two long-time respected locals who were growing.

We moved away so that our daughter would not go to highschool in that environment. However, we have close friends still living there and we visit occasionally. It's like time travel. Nothing has really changed, except that medical marijuana is grown openly. Now meth and heroin (which Gary admitted to taking in the article linked above) have made big inroads.

Gary Bullock came of age in this environment. Apparently, he did OK for awhile, but drug use took him down. He was arrested for cocaine in April 2013. According to comments in the above linked article, it wasn't the first time he was arrested.

Even though we don't feel that we really knew Gary well as a child, to see a former student and our daughter's classmate commit such a horrendous crime is heartbreaking. I look at that little boy in the class pictures and it doesn't seem real. My heart goes out to his family and children, and to the good people in SoHum who must be in shock. But above all, I feel for the Eurekans at St. Bernard's who loved their priest. I can't begin to imagine their horror and sorrow.

Thanks Lilibet. I've lived in Hum County for 39 years, so I know all about what has been going on here during that time. I'm just a little curious why we haven't heard more about Gary than "he's a d. bag." Usually when we hear about a criminal act someone has committed we hear everything all about them in about a week. Just seems like no detail has come out about him. I think lots of people grew up in So Hum during the last 45 years, but most of them did not become murders, regardless what was going on around them. Even the posts from locals who seem to know him aren't exactly saying anything specific.

Eureka has always been a creepy town in my opinion and the crime rate seemed to go up for all kinds of crimes once the prison was built in Crescent City in 1989, sounds like you got away before that arrived. For being a fairly small town, the police don't seem to be able or want to be able to get the meth/crack/whatever element under any kind of control. That is the worst problem here now and I believe it is all over this county. The homeless problem is also big here.

When we have people who throw their influence around the county because they can and they make statements blaming the Priest's murder on people who are having coat drives for those without, well, you have to wonder why problems never get solved.

I'm beginning to think the authorities are keeping the wraps on the real Gary Lee Bullock story, not really sure why. And it seems those who do know him aren't publicly saying anything either.

LOL Well if I'd known you'd lived in HumCo that long, Rosebutter, I would have shortened my history! :) Maybe it will provide background for others.

I agree that the silence from locals has been deafening. I googled Gary Bullock immediately and couldn't find an online presence or anything about his past, and news articles had nothing. I've noticed that in other cases in small towns the locals clam up, perhaps because they have to live there after it's all over and interact with the family.

IMO Bullock's mother has been a big fish in the small pond of SoHum for many years and that may be a factor in the silence. She was an early organizer of a popular music festival thirty years ago. Her production company partnered with the Community Center until a huge controversy arose around eight or nine years ago. From what I read, it created quite a division in the community that still exists. I can provide links, but it would take us way OT and probably violate TOS about sleuthing family. The only reason I mention it is to speculate on the silence. Her supporters aren't going to talk publicly and her detractors only seem to speak anonymously in the comments sections.

I did notice that Kym Kemp, writer for the Lost Coast Outpost, said in the comments section of the previously linked article, that she would dig into Bullock's criminal background. Several commenters had revealed a lot, but the court records may be sealed due to a plea deal. Obviously this is all rumor. But I think Kym will do her best to find out.

You're probably right that the gag order may be so that the jury pool isn't tainted. The defense attorney has to do the best s/he can. Personally, I doubt it will go to trial. What kind of defense could he put on? I think he will plead guilty and accept life without parole to avoid the death penalty. JMO

Here is more information about Gary Bullock from a very long, but interesting article about the recently unsealed probation reports in three high-profile Humboldt County murders. Bullock had a long history of drug abuse.

Gary Lee Bullock
A little over a year before he was arrested for the killing of Eric Freed and became a household name in Humboldt County, Gary Bullock was pulled over near Garberville by a California Highway Patrol officer for not having proper license plates on his car. The officer determined he was driving under the influence, placed him under arrest and searched him, finding a plastic bag containing a gram of cocaine in Bullock's pocket.

Bullock's arrest for possession on Nov. 30, 2012 was widely reported in the aftermath of Freed's killing, as was the fact that he ultimately pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to probation. What hasn't been reported and what wouldn't be known without looking at Bullock's PSI report is that the misdemeanor plea agreement only came to be after another fell apart.

According to the report, Bullock initially agreed to plead as charged under a diversion program made possible by section 1000 of the California Penal Code. Under a diversion program, a defendant pleads guilty and agrees to enter a court-ordered treatment program. If he successfully completes the program and stays out of trouble, the conviction disappears from his record. But, to be eligible, a defendant can't have a prior drug conviction on his record.

Bullock's probation report found that he pleaded guilty in 2005 to a federal charge of conspiring to manufacture and distribute marijuana and subsequently served more than a year in federal prison. But, while it found Bullock ineligible for diversion, the report noted that drug treatment was in order. The report detailed Bullock's admitting to a pattern of on-and-off-again cocaine use over the decades leading up to his arrest. The report also details that Bullock said he engaged in a pattern of opiate usage, going through prolonged periods of heavy Vicodin and Norco use, but that he denied ever having withdrawal symptoms with the drugs. "This writer believes that client may have minimized his Vicodin and Norco use in the interview," the report states.

Born in Santa Barbara as the third of five siblings, Bullock moved to Humboldt County when he was 5 years old, after his parents divorced. At the time of the probation report, he and three of his siblings were living in Redway, as were his father, mother and step-father. In 1999, Bullock married and later had twin daughters. Bullock was employed as a truck driver for years, according to the report, but had recently become unemployed after suffering an injury on the job. He suffered from bouts of anxiety and depression and was taking Celexa, which is commonly used to treat depression.

Within days of the 2011 arrest, Bullock posted bail and enrolled in the Singing Trees alcohol and drug treatment program. According to the report, he stayed for two weeks before checking out. "It is recommended that Mr. Bullock be referred to the County Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Programs for outpatient treatment," the report concludes. "As Mr. Bullock attended only two weeks of residential treatment it would benefit him to participate in outpatient treatment group sessions to acquire the recovery skills necessary to maintain sobriety."

Five days after the probation report was presented to the court and Bullock was denied the diversion program, the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office reached a plea agreement under which it dismissed the felony charge and Bullock pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. He was sentenced to three years' probation but was not ordered to undergo an alcohol and other drug assessment or enroll in treatment. A little over eight months later, on Dec. 31, 2013, he was picked up for public intoxication after a pattern of erratic behavior in Redway. He reportedly told the arresting officer he was on heroin and methamphetamine.

As has been highly publicized, Bullock was held for about eight hours until after midnight on Jan. 1, 2014 and then released from jail. He is then alleged to have broken into the rectory of St. Bernard's Parrish, where police believe he tortured and murdered Freed.

Bullock's trial probably will not start in August.

The August trial date for 44-year-old Redway resident Gary Lee Bullock, the man accused of brutally torturing and murdering a Eureka Catholic priest on New Year's Day, may be pushed back after Conflict Counsel Kaleb Cockrum informed a judge at a Wednesday pretrial hearing that they may need more time to prepare.

"It looks unlikely that we will be ready by August," Cockrum told Judge John Feeney as the court readied to set a second pretrial hearing. "I do think we should set this in June, so it will be more definite."

Deputy District Attorney Elan Firpo agreed to the motion to schedule a second pretrial hearing, asking that it be set in the second week of June. After the brief exchange, Feeney set the pretrial hearing for June 11 at 2 p.m.

Handcuffed and wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, a healthier-looking Bullock did not speak during the proceeding other than a brief conversation with Cockrum.

A little more information from a local blogger.

Bullock looked healthier, has gained some weight, seemed alert and talked with his attorney before his case was called. He even smiled briefly while chatting with Mr. Cockrum. Then went back to his serious demeanor.

When Bullock's case was called, Mr. Cockrum said that the defense was in the "middle of doing investigation. It looks unlikely we will be ready for trial in August." Mr. Cockrum said that he could not say when he will be ready and that he would file a written motion asking for continuance of the trial and perhaps future dates.

Bullock's trial has been rescheduled to start November 17.

The murder trial for Redway resident Gary Lee Bullock, the man accused of brutally torturing and murdering a Eureka Catholic priest on New Year's Day, was pushed back to November during a Wednesday pretrial hearing due to delays in the defense's investigations.

Bullock's attorney, Conflict Counsel Kaleb Cockrum, requested that the judge vacate the previously scheduled Aug. 4 trial date and set it for Nov. 17.

"My investigator is out for medical reasons next month," Cockrum said, further stating that this would not leave them much time to finish their investigations and prepare for trial.

When asked by the judge if she agreed to this new date, Deputy District Attorney Elan Firpo said, "That is satisfactory."

Bullock's trial has been rescheduled again to start January 26, 2015.

The murder trial of 44-year-old Gary Lee Bullock was rescheduled a second time during a Wednesday hearing at the Humboldt County Courthouse after his defense attorney made a motion to continue the date.

Conflict Counsel Kaleb Cockrum requested to change the trial date due to plans for an expert to speak with Bullock scheduled to take place in November. Cockrum said he is also working another trial that is scheduled to take place during the same time as Bullock's previously set Nov. 17 trial date.

"We are requesting Jan. 26 for a trial date," he said.

Deputy District Attorney Elan Firpo did not object to the motion.

Making his first court appearance since June, Bullock stood handcuffed in an orange jail jumpsuit and watched the proceedings, occasionally consulting with Cockrum.

Judge John T. Feeney granted the motion for continuance and set a jury trial date for Jan. 26 at 8:30 a.m. The trial will be preceded by a pretrial hearing on Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. and a trial confirmation hearing on Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.

http://www.redwoodtimes.com/general...e-time-bullock-enters-revised-not-guilty-plea

Reading from a slip of paper held in his handcuffed hands, Gary Lee Bullock – the man accused in the brutal murder of a beloved Eureka priest — entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity during a Tuesday, Feb. 10 motion hearing at the Humboldt County Superior Courthouse...

After Bullock finished reading his brief plea, Judge John T. Feeney advised him that if he were to be found guilty, he could face a lifetime commitment in a state hospital. Feeney accepted the plea change, and asked counsel whether they would want to hire a psychiatrist for an evaluation...

Jury selection is set to begin in Bullock’s murder trial on March 2, preceded by a trial confirmation hearing on Feb. 18.

The March 2 jury selection date for the murder trial against Gary Lee Bullock was vacated for a fifth time during a trial confirmation hearing on Wednesday at the Humboldt County Superior Courthouse.

The decision to vacate the date was made after Bullock entered a revised plea of not guilty by reason of insanity last week on his murder, attempted arson and vehicle theft charges.

Attorneys met with Judge John Feeney on Feb. 13 to discuss the next steps in the case, which include psychiatric evaluations of Bullock by experts. On Wednesday, Feeney and the attorneys agreed that more time will be needed for Bullock’s attorney Conflict Counsel Kaleb Cockrum to submit curriculum vitae recommendations for experts as well as to allow the chosen experts to properly examine Bullock. Cockrum has submitted one recommendation to the court so far.

“This case is not going to be ready to proceed to trial next month,” Feeney said.

It is really hard to dig up news about GLB's legal process. From a blog I read by John Chiv, there should have been court dates in April and May 6 for various things. As usual LOCO is the best source, but there is nothing reported about these dates. As stated before, the trial was expected to start in September or October. I'll believe it when I see it.

The Redwood Times reported on the court hearing on March 10, already mentioned in an earlier post quoting LOCO.
http://www.redwoodtimes.com/general-news/20150316/judge-bullock-trial-likely-to-start-in-fall

The following information is from March 26:

While a trial date has yet to be set, Feeney said the court is anticipating an early October start date, with jury selection tentatively slated to begin Oct. 10.

Also, from the same article, a psychiatric evaluation by three psychiatrists has been ordered.

As always, the comments are interesting.

As far as I can tell, blogger John Chiv is the only one covering and/or publishing information about the hearings leading up to Gary Lee Bullocks trial. Whether the trial starts October 13 seems to depend on the reports from the psychiatrists. The next court date is the trial confirmation Wednesday Sept 30.

Here are his posts:

Sept 2 and 10:
http://johnchiv.blogspot.com/2015/09/next-hearing-for-gary-lee-bullock-set.html

Sept 22 and 24:
http://johnchiv.blogspot.com/2015/09/two-psychaitrist-evaluations-still-not.html

"Court and Counsel met today. We are still awaiting evaluation and reports from two of the court appointed psychiatrists," said Judge Feeney. The Judge said he "has been in correspondence with the experts."

"For now dates remain set," said Judge Feeney. "Whether we can proceed to trial depends on the status of the doctor's reports." Judge Feeney said they will have a better idea next Wednesday at trial confirmation.

Again from the John Chiv Blog: The trial has been reset to Feb. 8, 2016 because psychiatrists' reports were not done in time.

Mr. Kaleb Cockrum represents Bullock. Only one of three court appointed psychiatrists has met with Bullock and submitted a report.

That is Dr. Ana Glezer. Dr. John Chamberlain has to yet meet with Bullock. The third expert John Greene excused himself from the case.

The victim's sister was allowed to address the court about the rescheduling. The family is in limbo. Their father is 90. The case needs to go forward.
Amen (JMO).

From the Lost Coast Outpost (LOCO):

Back in March the court ordered three psychiatrists to evaluate Bullock. To date, only one, Anna Glezer of the University of California, San Francisco, has submitted her evaluation. A Dr. John Chamberlain, also of UCSF, told the court that he anticipates submitting an evaluation by October 7 or 8, though upon further questioning Bullock’s attorney, Kaleb Cockrum, said Chamberlain has yet to drive to Humboldt County to perform the evaluation.

It's barely five hours from SF to Eureka and it's a beautiful drive. Yes, there was a lot of smoke from fires in August, but when you know the approximate trial date, get it done! You've had six months! It's a court appointment! JMO

I'm surprised that it is legal for these psychological evaluations to take so long to be administered by employees or contractors of the county and or state.

Good grief.
