A few more ideas I had, none of which relate to each other:
The cut-out design on the bed's headboard is probably American, IMHO. It strikes me as a pre-1980 style. That American flag decal stuck to it looks like the type you can get anywhere. Veterans organizations routinely mail them out as part of their fundraising efforts and my kids have a few stuck to their bedroom door.
The blue syringe might be part of an earwax removal kit from a drugstore. After irrigating the ear canal you have to rest on your side for a while, so that might explain why it was left next to the bed. Plus, whoever used this room kept other toiletries on the nightstand, including the bottle we thought might be aftershave.
This is just my two cents, but the t-shirt looks less like something you'd buy at a store and more like something that was made up for an event. Do you know what I'm saying? Some college, charity, or other organization might have had these made for an event, possibly with a member creating an artsy logo for the shirts. The best I can make out of the actual design is what might be blue paint splatters, so possibly it's from an arts festival? That's just a guess. I don't know much about silk screening other than the fact that it's more expensive to make a full-color shirt like John Doe 21's than to print a single solid color logo, so my guess is these shirts were made up for a fairly large event. That might not be helpful but I really do think if this guy's photo is put out there in all possible cities of origin, the shirt might be key to identifying where he's from when someone says, "hey, I remember that shirt, it's from the 2002 Fun Run and I had/still have one just like it!"
It's been asked on here before why this man was photographed and that is a mystery. Unless I'm missing something, the FBI has reported that he is only seen in the photos looking at the girl, not touching her. (Disclaimer: not that that doesn't leave him guilty as sin if he was permitting this abuse to happen.) The pedophile taking the photos was presumably interested in the girl, so why even include an older man who is not very photogenic in the frame?
We've discussed the idea that he may be a hardcore alcoholic, but it struck me that he might be of diminished mental capacity. If he had the mind of a child, he truly might not understand that having an adult take explicit photos of a child was morally wrong. Or maybe he had some idea that it wasn't right and that's why his eyes are seemingly averted. He might have been scared about the situation but lacked the capacity to stand up to whoever was directing the girl to pose for the photos.
Please don't misinterpret the above as an attempt to "see the good in everyone," because if this guy was of normal mental capacity then I hope he gets his due when he's caught. But over a decade ago I helped at a soup kitchen and some of our diners were mild or moderately retarded adults who lived more or less independently. When I was dwelling on this case it struck me that if someone like them found himself in a situation like what is depicted in those photos, he might not be able to extricate himself, let alone stop the abuse of the child.
